Desert Island "Discs" Draft (2010-2019) - We Did It (1 Viewer)

7.1 - Charlie Faye & The Fayettes - by Charlie Faye & The Fayettes (2016)

The 60s are alive with this group. They are like The Supremes meets Dusty Springfield meets The Chiffons, etc. It is a throw back to the Motown/Stax and Phil Spector Wall of Sound time. Charlie wrote or co-wrote all the songs, and she and the Fayettes (Betty Soo and Alkina) sound great. This is an album of soul pop, and it is fabulous if you like that music. It's hard to pick which songs to link so here are a few:

One More Chance

Green Light

Eastside

Heart

Carelessly

It's All Happening

7.02

Album: The Lone Bellow

Artist: The Lone Bellow

Release Year: 2013

You Never Need Nobody

Green Eyes and a Heart of Gold

Two Sides of Lonely

@BobbyLayne was the person who introduced me to this band on this board and I fell in love instantly. A folk/Americana/alt-country band out of Brooklyn New York their three part harmonies are hypnotic and the plucky music warms the heart. They've released a few albums since, which I like a lot, but their self-titled debut remains my favorite.

on  my list, 2013 was a fantastic year for music

Massive Attack- Helgioland (2010)

While I think this is a solid album on its own and very consistent track to track, the pick is more about having the massive attack sound on my deserty island. Another album that has one of my favorite tunes of the decade where I stop what I'm doing and listen whenever it shuffles on in Spotify...paradise circus..one that's right up there with their best tracks. Lots of others on this one, imo.

7.05 – Raphael Saadiq – Stone Rollin’ – 2011

Former Lucy Pearl standout and all-around uber-producer writes his love letter to ‘60s rock and soul, insisting that the music therein exists for the utter realness with which his progenitors created tracks. Nary a false note exists here, no nostalgia traps emote, it’s just a beautiful sounding record. A must have for anybody who digs the original sound of neo-soul/rock and for general mid '60s enthusiasts alike, this album remains so faithful in homage paid in time and space as to beg for listens.

This should have won an end of year award somewhere.

Heart Attack, Go To Hell, Stone Rollin’, and Good Man cement themselves in the echelon of pop soul tracks.

@John Bender got me into this back in ’12.

Still. ####in’. Doin’ it.

7.07 - Wolf Alice - My Love Is Cool (2015)

I don't tell lies no more, you know
I just don't tell the truth
I don't know what I'm looking for, ya know
But I'm not looking for proof

Is this shoegaze?  "Indie pop"?  "Indie rock"?  New grunge?  Does it matter?  Album is great, and I don't know why this band isn't more popular in the US.  Big fan.

"Lisbon" (Live at Glastonbury)

"Your Loves Whore" (Live)

"Bros"

"Giant Peach"
I'd just decided on this as my next pick.

Hey guys!  Just thought I'd pop in and say hi.  I was in the original Desert Island Draft, think it was around 2003 or so.  Anyway, I don't think I've heard a single album in this draft so far.   :bag:

I guess I can use it to learn up what's the happening musaq these days  :nerd:
Yeah, that's what I'm doing.  The playlist on Spotify has been a godsend.  Whole lotta new music I'm discovering thanks to this draft.  Or, in the case of a band like White Denim (which I remember listening to a few times but forgot about them) it's been a rediscovery.  2020 getting off to a great start.

Snap, that was fast.

7.3 Chromatics, Kill for Love (2012)

Covers similar sonic ground as several of my other picks, but is more suited to isolation and introspective listening. I'll see if I can draft a car I can drive around the island while listening to this one. Bit on the long side, but it builds beautifully.

Kill for Love

Back From the Grave
Gotta love the camera work on Kill For Love. "No, that's not an impossibly good looking lead singer you're seeing. Not at all. Just ignore it. Okay, we quit."

Same here. I participate in the drafts often, but I'm more in your camp about the discovery of music in this one. If I were younger or a bit more into keeping up, I don't think I'd have missed or ignored the buzz or articles (or given second listens to in the case of some) about awesomeness like Anderson .Paak, CHROMATICS, Foxygen, etc.

To be honest, likely not records of my decade, but who knows?  They've been somewhat stunning revelations.

She's on my list, but not this album (though I do like this album).
Rather surprised Rolling Stone had it ranked #4 for the decade, but it's a solid choice.  She's got a few terrific albums to choose from, IMO.

Producer Johnny Jewel definitely has a band type (Chromatics, Desire, Glass Candy).

Even with the decline of the album, there's still so much music racing by my ears.  The "industry" such as it is today pushes a two-pronged offensive of new releases and the old classics so a lot of great stuff falls through the giant crack in the center.  It's no longer new and wasn't popular enough in its moment to enter the pantheon of classics.  It's been cool to discover/rediscover some of these records in this draft.

RD 7 FIDLAR by FIDLAR (2013)

genre: #### you

The L.A. skate-punk band's debut full-length is full of snotty songs about cheap beer, cheap cocaine, cheap weed, and "####ty pills." They're not reinventing the wheel, but FIDLAR have their references down. - Pitchfork

FIDLAR’s saving grace is that they can back their image up. Not that being an authentic drug-snorting, 40-drinking petty thief with little ambition besides playing rock shows and skating with the bros should be a point of pride, but as the adage says, write what you know. Their self-titled collection may be narrow in its lyrical scope, but it doesn’t lack in authenticity, and anyone with an inclination to the loud, hooky and irreverent R-rated tunes will find much to like. - Paste Magazine

Thanks to @John Maddens Lunchbox for keeping track of the old music drafts.  I wish I knew how to copy/paste with formatting.
Does this help @Eephus

unfortunately the links dont take you straight there, you have to copy and paste. Also this is only up to 2017 when they banned the sex drugs and rock n roll draft. After that i kinda lost interest. Add them if they are easy to find.

I feel like I just saw a ghost...

I recall raising a stink when swift made our album of the year list but fka twigs didn't for lp1
I think I might have missed that one. I've only done one AOTY draft and a partial one in 2015 , and I had a few weeks to a month for those. I'm sure I voted for neither, and honestly don't remember said stink, which I likely would have. I don't think Taylor made my short or long list this time, but the song I drafted for a mixtape draft felt catchy enough to withhold some time, and it seems to have.

As far as on your end and FKA twigs, I honestly don't remember. I've heard more Swift than Twigs, and that's probably only but for distribution and not taste or merit. I'd bet if I heard Twigs all over in commercials, in coffee shops, etc., I'd be somewhat of a fan and choose her songs accordingly. It's probably largely about getting from Point A of Production to Point B of Listener's Ear. That may be the source of the lament.

But year, JML just gave us a blast from drafts past, and that's cool. I'm checking it out right now.
