*** OFFICIAL *** COVID-19 CoronaVirus Thread. Fresh epidemic fears as child pneumonia cases surge in Europe after China outbreak. NOW in USA (17 Viewers)

Finally got around to reading some background info for this. I think St Louis is an interesting example in 1918. Their low mortality rate was due in large part to better care as well. Here are numbers compared to KC.

687k vs 284k (2.41) Total population and ratio

2883 vs 1724 (1.67) Deaths and ratio

31693 vs 11431 (2.8) Cases and ratio

People in St. louis actually caught the flu at a higher rate, but a smaller % died. One of the things I read is that they were very quick to put people on bed rest. They also treated people in their own homes limiting sick people heading out in public or on public transportation.

I have to ask all the FBG hoarders, what exactly  are you doing with the eggs? I mean, they don't last indefinitely and I don't think you can freeze them. Yet people in SA are to the point of ripping them right out of the chicken's asses. I REALLY don't get this one.
Guinness just posted on Twitter that the shortage isn't due to preppers hoarding them.

It's for the worlds largest easter egg hunt.... which unfortunately just got cancelled.

I used to work for a company that shipped eggs from Brazil to Angola. The transit time was about 45 days. It took 3-6 months to clear them through customs after which they went straight to the supermarkets and were sold. They were not refrigerated at any time during that span of time. Eggs can last longer than you think.

That said, the US may treat eggs differently than Brazil (that don't treat them at all AFAIK) so YMMV
Fresh farm eggs don't even need to be refrigerated if they haven't been washed. The ones in the markets have been washed so they need to be refrigerated.

Our family who is low risk for this: staying indoors, no social contact, minimizing gatherings.

my wife’s parents: picking up a friend at the airport, going to a hotel, and then going out to dinner.

my parents: going to the gym.

boomers are doing their best to self select themselves out of the population.
My mom and stepfather (in their 70s) went to the library yesterday!  Other than the gym, a cruise ship, or Capella's dad's orgy, I can't think of a worse place for them to go.

I'm certainly going to find out.

But I'm going to test a variety of theories.  Wine, Beer, scotch...

In a national emergency, drinking at home isn't a problem.  It's preventative medicine.
I saw a placard in a bar once

"Drinking alcohol doesn't solve your problems

Then again, neither does drinking milk"

Couple of questions. I think I know the answer to the first one but I will ask anyway.

Tomorrow is our anniversary was going to go out for a nice dinner should cancel that right? Second is my wife is on hormone therapy for breast cancer should she stop for now? Not sure if it weakens immune system or not.

Yes

Some local pizza places and delis here offering free lunch everyday for kids until schools open again

Good stuff
Stuff like this makes me feel really good. Sounds like it might be a good place to do some volunteering. Have a staff member load the labeled bags into your car or leave dockside for you to load yourself, then just leave on front porch of recipients. Safe and very helpful.

Heading out for awhile and told me wife it feels like the The Walking Dead. I told her hopefully I can find supplies, if not maybe I can try another town. Not quite up to a house to house scavenging through neighborhoods, but that may be next.

Hormone therapy (tamoxifen, the AIs) doesn't weaken the immune system. It simply reduces the amount of estrogen in your system which is fuel for ER+ bc. It's chemo that affects your immune system by killing a lot of your good cells too, including white blood cells.

NY times interviewed a guy who is hoarding 18000 sanitizing items. Can’t sell them now because amazon and eBay shut him down. Can’t believe he allowed the times to interview him.

Ouch.

I can see trying to profit at times with the whole supply/demand but this quickly turned into a situation where you are not making a profit among a few crazy preppers.

He probably thinks letting this piece be done night have someone reach out to purchase a large amount (and someone probably already has) but no way I show my face.

If he doesn't want to lose all his money maybe return to the stores.  I'm sure they would accept.

We have 3 kids. We could go through 50 eggs a week easily.

My father hit a casino on Thursday. Said it was fine because they used tissues when playing the slots. Begged him not to go but he said they had a $200 voucher so basically had no choice. Mindblowing.

Actually they last a few weeks in the fridge and they can be frozen (not in the shells). They have a wealth of vitamins, minerals, trace elements, fat and protein. They're almost a perfect food. I bought two 18 egg cartons last week, but there was no shortage and did not seem in much  demand.

I am betting on esports on Draftkings. It is either that or Liga soccer.. It is so weird seeing only two options on their main page.

Our school district is closed but they are offering grab and go lunch and breakfast for all students. There are quite a few food insecure families around here so that’s pretty awesome.
Same here. My son’s school’s text blast about this read “any child in the community”, not just students. I suspect all local public schools are offering the same. Lots of kid around here go to charter** schools fairly far from their homes, so being able to go to the nearest school will be a big help.

** locally, charter schools and public schools are indistinguishable except for some behind-the-scenes stuff. Charter schools are still part of the public school system.

We have managed to get my 85 year old mom on board with the idea of staying home and my sisters delivering her groceries. That's good.

My wife's parents are both in their late 70's and have various ailments--diabetes and heart disease. . These people eat out two meals a day--every day, so they have zero food in their house. We told them to put together a list of the food they would like and we would have it delivered. Nope--no go. They told me last night, they would go stir crazy if they have to stay home for more than a day. Just insane.
My mom is 68. Diabetic and COPD. She’s self quarantine since Monday. She’s going nuts being alone but understands it’s important.

Could she come and visit my family if none of us are symptomatic?

If your wife wasn't on hormone therapy, I would say that it's probably safe to go out (as long as you thoroughly wash your hands, etc.)

But with a vulnerable wife........I vote for staying home.

(And don't stop taking your meds.)

My 85 year old father (heart condition, cancer survivor) went to a flea market today to "see some friends".   :wall:

I would like to make an apology.

Baseball — for years I’ve called you “boring”, “horrendous”, “a sport for people who crave something to do crossword puzzles to”, “a total waste of time for people with no friends” and I’ve even said I would rather watch nothing than watch a April baseball game.

I was wrong. I would lose an arm for a baseball game right now, or any competitive sport. It’s only day 3. If the corona doesn’t take me the boredom will.
read a book

Business as usual around here so far as far as people out and about. Grocery store was usual Saturday morning busy today. Shelves were stocked as usual, TP was almost gone but we scored some at Dollar General earlier in the morning.

Was at super Walmart this morning at 2 am, probably 30 people in there. Pasta was pretty much gone. Eggs....gone(weird), canned soups were picked over. TP , Lysol wipes and hand sanitizer obviously gone.

I loaded up on pasta, sauces, canned soups, 5 lb bag of rice , canned fruit. Wth, better to be looking at them than looking for them I guess.

Just got this email.

I'm glad they are so concerned for their patrons that they are staying open for 2 more days:

Out of an abundance of caution and to assist with our nation’s preventive efforts, Universal Orlando Resort will temporarily close its theme parks and Blue Man Group shows beginning Monday, March 16. We anticipate remaining closed through the end of March – but will continue to evaluate the situation.

Your entire family averages two eggs a day? Wow. That being said, safe to assume you went out and bought 500 eggs then? Ten times what you needed seems to be the minimum going rate for the average American right now.
