AOC Boycotting the State of the Union (1 Viewer)

"After Much Deliberation, I have decided that I will not use my presence at a state ceremony to normalize Trump's lawless conduct and subversion of the constitution.   None of this is normal and I will not legitimize it.  Consequently, I will not be attending the State of the Union."

How do we feel about a high profile representative not attending the State of the Union?

It's not the decision I would make, but it's reasonable and I respect her choice.

She's gonna watch it from her couch with a glass of wine and contemplate defeat. Most likely brain storm the new scandal they can create.

Everybody makes choices. As an elected member of congress she should be there.  It seems Trump has dragged everybody down to his level in politics.  In reality they were probably all there before  but now everyone is out in the open.

1) really don’t care about her and don’t know why she gets so much publicity

2) poster child for the current generation’s “look at me” mindset

3) stuff like this feeds the Trump base and IMO is a huge negative for Dems; almost like she wants to see the Dem nominee lose in 2020

I won’t be watching but think she should attend and give Trump whatever response he deserves based on the content of the speech.

There's always going to be someone republicans will use to rile up their base.   See Clinton, Hillary.  I remember when she was a disgrace because she didn't leave Bill but when Trump pays for it with a porn star he's a playboy.

No big deal, she will have the opportunity to see President Trump do this a few more times (unless she loses reelection).

It's amazing how Republicans never worry about riling up the Dem base.  I mean the President crimes more or less every day and no one ever suggests it's a bad idea electorally.  AOC boycotts a speech and it guarantees Trump's reelection.
It must be some kind of cognitive dissonance.

2-1 Lightning now.

Thats because everybody knows that base is too riled up already about hotel shampoo being racist and the friends tv show not having enough diversity.

All AOC does is divide the party this helping to hand 2020 back to Trump.  Her radical green new deal did the same thing.  The party desperately needs unity right now.

Good

Less legitimacy for a corrupt govt

I'm likely in the minority but my take would be you always attend. This isn't about Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I'd say the same for anyone.

This is about doing your job.

And part of your job is you show up for work. Even when it's not going your way. And even when "work" is just sitting there.

This is different than declining an offer to visit the Whitehouse as a guest. This is your job.

I'm not sure how commonplace deciding not to show for the State Of The Union is. But it feels like a lame move to me.

It is not just her:

Reps. Maxine Waters, Earl Blumenauer, and Frederica Wilson are also skipping the State of the Union, according to Axios.

Completely agree. But part of "the job" is political theater. In way, by boycotting and jumping on InstaGram, she's doing her job (at least in her mind).
