The 100 Greatest “New Wave” songs 1. Everybody Wants to Rule the World-Tears for Fears (2 Viewers)

7. “Just Can’t Get Enough” Depeche Mode (1981, from Speak and Spell

https://youtu.be/_6FBfAQ-NDE

So this is early Depeche Mode; the song was written by Vince Clarke, who left the band immediately thereafter to form Yaz, the Assembly (with Undertones lead singer Feargal Sharkey; their only single “Never Never” remains one of my favorite largely unknown songs ever) and finally Erasure with Andy Bell. But he never quite reached again the peak that he does here, and frankly Depeche Mode doesn’t either: this infectious dance song is their height, and one of the very best New Wave tunes ever produced.
people might have other preferred DM songs (as is clear from recent posts) but this is a quintessential New Wave song. Defines a slice of what defines New Wave (the synth heavy slice) imo. nice pick

Love Vince Clarke. I think his work after leaving Depeche Mode is fantastic. I saw Erasure a couple of years ago and was very impressed. I’ve also seen Depeche Mode a couple of times and they were amazing as well.  Music for the Masses just missed the cutoff, but it and Violator are amazing imo.

This has happened a lot - and I realize that different people have different tastes, but there are a lot of posts that tim makes that I think, "Yea that's a good song, but they have way better songs than that."

For example Depeche Mode - Never Let Me Down Again is way better than Just Can't Get Enough.
If the next 6 songs arent depeche mode, I'm gonna be disappointed

I couldn't disagree with this more, their best music came after Vince Clarke's exit and they got away from this calculated synthpop dance music.

Whatever, it is your list.

If I were putting together a 15 song best of DM cd, I would lead off with JCGE, but follow it with 14 Martin Gore songs.

6. “Love Will Tear Us Apart” Joy Division (1980, released as a single)

https://youtu.be/zuuObGsB0No

One of the most tragic songs of any genre of popular music. Guy writes about the breakup of his marriage and thoughts of suicide, and then he commits suicide even before the song is released.

Lyrically, this is arguably the best song on this entire list. There is enormous poetic talent on display here which makes the whole thing sadder still.

A few years ago British folk artists June Tabor and Oyaterband recorded a slow acoustic version of this song which fleshes out the words and melody. I find it sublime:

Individual song choices aside, there are - off the top of my head - at least 6 or 8 absolute Top 25 must-have bands yet to appear on this list.

The o/u for how many of them make it from this point onward is 3.5
Ok, Joy Division is 1

Under looking good though

From their early more New Wave songs you may be correct.  But better albums followed although their sound did change.  Violator is their overall peak.

Both good choices, but I'd add Black Celebration as an offering.

From a purely NEW WAVE sound I can agree JCGE is a great choice. Its awesome in concert and the crowd loves it.

Wasn’t expecting this, but a solid choice. My favorite band by far, but not my favorite song. One thing I love about New Order and Peter Hook live is that they still play this song and so many other Joy Division songs. The B-side to this song, These Days, is solid.

After all that Cindy Lauper nonsense, you go and do something like this and completely redeem yourself!

For me it’s the definition of post punk . I love this song , my favorite, well tied with Heroes for my time favorite song. My wife hates this song , too cold she says .

Give New Dawn Fades a listen if you want some insight what was going on inside Ian’s head. Such a shame they were too young to recognize how troubled he was , it’s all there in the lyrics of numerous songs

All-timer tune regardless of genre.

Will be interesting to see what songs, let alone new wave...sorry- "new wave"- songs are better.

Quibble time deluxe!

5. “Heart of Glass” Blondie (1978, from Parallel Lines

https://youtu.be/WGU_4-5RaxU

The video begins with a shot of Studio 54 and a disco ball, which is representative of the fact that this is just as much as disco classic as it is a New Wave classic. Another very key disco element is that Deborah Harry appears to be as coked up as possible.

I was in 7th grade when this song hit the airways. It was for me, and I think for most people, our first exposure to what would come to be termed “New Wave”. And it’s never gotten old, I love listening to this even now.

If I get quarantined I may have to do a top 50 depeche mode songs thread
I would read that list.  "World in My Eyes" is number 1 for me.  "Somebody" was the song for the first dance at my wedding.  Some of their more recent stuff gets overlooked as well.

Gotta say, this is finishing pretty strong.

Heart of Glass is awesome.

And this will have been much more enjoyable than the Rush or Bowie threads will be. :yucky:

Just went back through some of the thread.  As far as New Wave goes I think the DM choices of People are People. Just Can't Get Enough and Everything Counts are probably the right ones as their biggest songs pre-Violator.  There are better songs but for a list like this I am ok with them as the picks.

4. “In Between Days” The Cure (1985, from The Head on the Door

https://youtu.be/EDMDb8unsIA

This might be the prettiest melody on this entire list. A near perfect pop song with perhaps the best instrumental intro as well.

I was a big fan of the early Cure and I wish I had the room to put more of their songs on this list. Among my favorites, in no particular order:

Love Cats

Close to You

Jumping Someone Else’s Train

10:15

Caterpillar

Let’s Go to Bed
