It really little to do with nationalism.  You have ruthless leaders who had a lust for power.  They used class warfare, they used race, they used victimhood, they used religion.  What they really believed was themselves and their insatiable quest for power.   Leftist historians like to pick nationalism and ignore the social economic rhetoric which played an equally important role but uncomfortably aligns with their beliefs.   The key to a good government is not to be warriors against nationalism or religion or social welfare.  The key is to have checks and balances and limits to governmental powers.
Agree completely.  Check out the Cook County / Chicago political machine as a left-leaning example of unchecked power.  It’s a freaking train wreck that costs taxpayers boatloads of money to feed the engine of corruption.

Economy is a strong argument. I just have a real problem getting over the fact he describes me as a democrat, hating America and hating American values. Pretty regularly.

How do your reasonable Republican friends feel about that? Oh well? A little collateral damage?
They see the rhetoric that Democrats throw around and they hardly feel any empathy towards them.  It is just a vicious cycle.   The daily rhetoric of accusing Republicans of putting party over country is no different then calling them unaAmerican.

She's saying what we've all seen since Trump took the nomination.

I remember the social media explosion right after it was clear Trump was going to win.  A guy I was college friends with posted "If you voted for Trump, then you're a racist and f#$% you!"

A guy I followed on Twitter that shared a similar hobby tweeted out the "If you voted for Trump, the F$% you, unfollow me."  And I did.

A large percentage of the internet Left behaves in this manner.  If you don't agree with me, if you don't vote like me, then you're bad.  You're a bad human.  You have no morals.  You're a racist.  You're a sexist.  You're a homophobe.  you're a biggot.  And...that's not the case.  I just don't agree with you.

But many of the Left insist--agree with me, vote with me, or wear this label.  You're made to feel as if you're less of a person or bad because you don't view a certain issue this way.  Don't like one part of the ACA?  Racist.  You don't want black people to have insurance.  Think we shouldn't allow late term abortions?  You're a sexist and you hate women.  And you're the very reason women have been oppressed for hundreds of years.

Rather than just dicussing the issues, it becomes an attack on one's morality.  And the left hasn't slowed down.  Trump brings out the worst in them.

But MANY pundits, tv personalities, and even voters said this behavior drove them to the polls.  And instead of focusing on issues--you're still focused on telling anyone that supports Trump or his policies that they're bad.  It didn't work for you in 2016, and it won't work for you in 2020.  But keep doing it.

At the end of the day, you can't tell me that Trump spews hate and divides people--and then get on the internet and spew hate and divide people.  Then they justify it.  If you're a racist, as I've labeled you myself, then you deserve it.  And the message is clear:  The left can spew hate.  They can be divisive.  The right can't.  That's not love.  That's not protecting or supporting minorities.  It's politics.  That's all it's been.  You want to tell people they can't believe something less they be a racist.  You make them feel bad for having their own beliefs.  Join us or be evil.

And America is just so incredibly sick of it.  Most of the Right don't want to waste the energy on the internet.  Nothing productive comes out of these conversations.  But they'll sure see you at the voting booth in November.

I'm surprised it took this long for the tired "hey but 401 yo" shot.

I know that sounds fun but for a huge number of voters in this country, it's about the economy. More importantly, it's about their particular status. It's what Bill Clinton was able focus on with the overwhelmingly effective "It's the Economy, Stupid".

The debate on who's responsible and who can take credit or blame can be interesting. And stats and charts can be interesting. But for a great many people, their main concern is how they feel about their personal economic situation. That will be telling.
No question personal economics are quite important to me.  That said, I have progeny.  I want them to inherit a world in which they can thrive.  I want them to not think ill of me when I am gone.  They say that if you plant ice you will harvest wind.    I prefer that we plant shade trees, fruit trees, nut bearing trees, grasses and sedges that prevent erosion, clean the water, and provide breathable air.   In short I balance the now against a future, a future I have launched my progeny into.

Without a doubt, there are liberals out there who are crass.  However, I think you’re downplaying similar behavior on the right.  Overall, it’s a shame if anyone’s vote is changed by rebelling against an obnoxious small minority.

I find just the opposite.  The majority of "political" post I see on Facebook are people trying to paint Pelosi and gang as these terrible socialist that are trying to take all your rights away.  Granted, the same 2-5 people like the post these people share but I rarely see "liberals" posting similar articles.  If they do post something it's usually along the lines of "what do you think of what Trump said...." Granted they also only get the same amount of people liking their post, but I think you are off base when you say the right doesn't want to waste the energy on the internet.  I do agree with your comment America is sick of it, but it's sick of, the great line here, both sidz….

I don't see people from the Right claiming "If you disagree with me, you're racist, homophobic, etc."

People have been jerks on social media since it's advent.

No, because it's "If you disagree with me you're doomed to burn in hell for eternity" from the Right.

It took me a few attempts to get through the article because I can't stand the writing style.  The whole thing reads like a Russian troll wrote it or that she had an agenda she wanted to write about and made things fit into that agenda.  I cringed when she said her circle of friends or colleagues feared for her safety for wanting to go to a Trump rally.

The main google search is largely multiple pages of Trump calling Lawmakers unAmerican and treasonous because they didn't applaud him at the SOTU. Which I suppose is bad enough.

But I have heard the "Democrats are unamerican and hate American values" FULL STOP comment at his rallies but do not have a link for that. I am sure of it because I remember it so distinctly. I don't have time to review rally footage or transcripts. But in general I'm sure you will stipulate he uses quite abusive language towards fellow Americans pretty regularly.

I mean people LOST THEIR MINDS on the Obama offhand "clinging to guns and religon" comment. That he said once. Off the cuff.

It's so toxic its hard to comprehend.
Thanks. For sure there are lots of quotes with Trump saying negative things about Lawmakers.

That's why I was looking for a few quotes with what you were saying when you say Trump "describes me as a democrat, hating America and hating American values. Pretty regularly."

I'm not trying to argue. I'm trying to understand what you mean when you say he regularly says you, or regular voting people like me and you, hate America and we hate American values.

My take is this:  I don't think the Republican party is any better or worse than the Democratic party.   Neither party is above hurling insults, spreading nasty rumors or telling outright lies to get elected.  The people on the right that complain about Democrats portraying Trump supporters as being stupid or racists are the same ones that came up with terms like "#######s", "moonbats" and "snowflakes" to describe Democrats.   I know, I have friends and family that use the word "liberals" like it is an ethnic slur and Democrats aren't any better when they say Trumpsters

We've all heard this crap from both sides, often times on FBGs, and it is disgusting.   Too many Americans put up with and often defend the behavior and statements from politicians on their side that should be condemned.

So any time you want to point out the bad behavior from the opposition party just remember there are plenty of examples from your party too.   Neither party should feel superior when it comes to that.  Maybe it is time for us all to look into the mirror and start holding ourselves and the people representing us to a higher standard.

As far as the original post, I do agree that at the moment the Republican party is more unified but they have done so under a person of very poor character.  I don't think that is anything to be praised for.

This, I know many people who don't love Trump but will vote for him anyways because they are personally benefiting (or in some cases, at least think they are) from Trump's policies, specifically from the economy. I don't think these are necessarily bad people, but I'd be lying if I said I don't look at them a bit differently for continuing to support a guy like Trump for their personal interest, especially those who would be well off regardless of if they were getting taxed at a higher rate.

As far as the article goes, I definitely agree with the main point of it. The thought that all Trump supporters are vicious, racist, evil people is wrong and only continues to hurt the divide in the country.
The article is based on a lie: that anyone believes “all Trump supporters are vicious, racist, evil people.”  I’m sure Trump supporters LOVE to repeat this particular lie, because it is such a straw man.

Huh?  You apparently don't get online very much.

It's absolutely a fact that there are people on the left that believe all Trump supporters are "vicious, racist, evil people".  You spend any time on Twitter at all?  Watch MSNBC?  The View?  Watch any Hollywood celebrity?

Hi, Joe.  To be clear, I don't know this person, and I'm don't care enough to do any serious research into her history.  I'm just saying that this particular story sounds like it was written specifically to appeal to Trump supporters, and that activates my skepticism meter.

I say that as somebody who has two pro-Trump parents, one of whom breaks down into tears when her adult children challenge her on that.  Also, I personally use the term "SJW" as a pejorative and I can sort of understand why the weird identitarian Calvinism of certain communities might encourage a person to give a Trump a look.  But that piece triggers my BS detector.  If I'm wrong, I'm wrong.
You sound angry because she's making Trump supporters look human, and that's the last thing you or any Trump haters want to see or believe.

Ps, I'm not a Trumper, just calling it as I see it.

Repersentives just don't show up out of the blue. If you are saying the repersentives of the people who voted them in, that they hate America and America values you are kinda calling those that voted for them the same.

Did you miss the part where he said both his parents are pro-Trump, or does he just not want them to "look human"?

Nope, of course I saw it. Still doesn't change how he comes across.

This sounds to me like something written by a troll.  It just seems to push too many predictable buttons to be taken seriously.

The "knitting" thing is a dead give-away IMO.  People who spend too much time online know that this particular corner of the world has apparently turned super-toxic.  But it's a tiny community.  Somebody who claims to be a walk-away from that community is more likely to be a sock-puppet than a real person.
:goodposting:   Felt like clickbait throughout.....

In fairness, Trump is such a fire hose of hateful rhetoric that i can understand why some of his ignorance got lost in the torrent.  Remember when Trump called San Francisco a dangerous and disgusting slum?  Or when he called Baltimore a disgusting....rodent infested mess?

Can you imagine the backlash a Democrat would get if s/he made similar comments about rural, mid-western American towns?  How many hundreds of pieces have we read from journalists going to diners in small towns and soliciting their views on Trump, all in an effort to find out how Democrats can better understand rural conservatives.  Where are the similar pieces on the other side, pieces about conservatives from mid-western towns traveling to eateries in coastal cities to better understand their views and if Republicans are reaching out to them?  Why don’t those pieces exist?

Of course there are bad actors on both sides hurling insults and ugly language. But the dynamics are not equal. Trump won, so many Republicans have more of a gloating edge to their insults. Many on the left are more angry than Trump supporters (and more frustrated, more shocked. etc). If Trump wins again I think they're going to be even more angry. And IMO if Bernie gets screwed, I think all hell is going to break loose.

Even if you think this article is cheesy, I think it's a generally positive message that the "other side" isn't evil.

Jacob Wohl does go to hipster coffee shops and report back.

I don't want Bernie to win the Democratic nomination. But if he does, the silver lining will be getting to watch both Trump's and Bernie's supporters complain that the election was rigged, regardless of the outcome, no matter what.

Thanks. Specifically though so I can understand what he means, I'd like to see some of the real actual quotes for what @Jackstraw is talking about for when he says Trump "describes me as a democrat, hating America and hating American values. Pretty regularly."

Yes that would be fun but I meant: if Bernie gets screwed out of the nomination by DEMS, there will be violent demonstrations.

Jesus Christ, man. Get out from in front of your computer and experience the world. News flash: twitter isn’t real. And random Hollywood people aren’t real. I watch plenty of both MSNBC and Fox News. I don’t think MSNBC portrays all trump supporters as racists any more than Fox News portrays liberals and whiny snowflakes. If you think that’s what they do, you have some selective hearing.

I agree.  The President of the United States should not be insulting major parts of it.  I understand that there are geographical divides in the US and it's natural that they come up from time to time, but not like this.

Well in fairness I do seem to recall buckets of deplorables and clinging to Bibles and guns.  I also question whether the interviews you speak of were to gain understanding or to hold up to ridicule.

And please, don't mistake my memories of a few events to be defense of the present administration.  Rather it is just a few examples to help me keep matters in perspective in a time where perspective is easily lost.  No side is without blame.  Some maybe more than others, but no side without. Now I blame Trump for the current state of affairs, but I do think he is a symptom of a disease that has been festering for far longer, a disease harbored by many, of many stripes.

Can you share Don Lemon’s quote?
No he can’t because Lemon didn’t say anything, he laughed at what someone else said. Almost like Trump telling Pompeo he really have it to that girl reporter and then flash to senators patting him on the back, but you know, different standards and all...

Not only did he laugh at what someone else said, he couldn't even talk he was laughing so hard. And he never even cut the guy off, just let him ramble on and insulting rural America.

In fact, both of his guests that night were doing it.

I'm not disagreeing that both sides do it. I'm disagreeing with your assertion that the left doesn't do it at all.

It's simply a preposterous position to take on your part.

Pro tip:Twitter is real. It's full of real people saying all kinds of nasty crap.  Same thing for Facebook and everything else.

The someone was a Republican, who was mockingly suggesting - in a panel discussion about SOS Pompeo barrating a reporter and then banning her network from a State travel event for having the temerity for asking about the Ukraine situation - that Trump fans don’t care about the President’s own ignorance of history and geography.

Donyou think Trump supporters care about his basic lack of history and geography?

Yeah, I know how this works.  You get some nominal Republican-in-name-only on your side and then declare "See, Republicans are even against him".

So, please, don't insult our intelligence with "He's a Republican".
