My OOTP Career Thread: Congratulations to the 1995 World Champion Blue Jays (2 Viewers)

With the possibility looming of no real or fantasy baseball for a while, I'm going to replay the 90s in Out of the Park Baseball as a distraction.

I'll be taking on one of the NL expansion franchises in 1993.  I looked on the OOTP forums and it appears I need to replay the 1992 season first and then take the Rockies or Marlins job before the expansion draft.  I'm an old Strat-O-Matic nerd but have never really bonded with OOTP.  I've bought a few versions over the years but found them too much like work.  So I'm using the 92 season as a way of familiarizing myself with the myriad options available in the UI.

~25 games into the 92 season, Toronto and Atlanta have the best records in their leagues.  Cecil Fielder and Chris Hoiles are tied for the league lead in HRs with 11.  Cubs reliever Dave Smith has somehow managed to win 5 games by the first week of May.  Bert Blyleven was released before the season leaving him 31 games short of 300.

Fast simmed to the end of May 1992.

Baltimore has passed the Blue Jays in the AL East while Minnesota has opened up a 5 1/2 game lead in the West.  The Oaklands who won the division in real-life are already 11 1/2 games back.  Kevin Brown blew out his elbow for Texas and is out for the year.

In the NL, the Cardinals, Mets and Pirates are scrapping in the East with Atlanta 2 1/2 games up on San Diego out West.  The Padres have the second best record in the league and would lead the East by 5 games.

Frank Thomas has a .534 OBP but he still trails Barry Bonds in OPS.  Rob Deer, Chris Hoiles and Mark McGwire are tied for the MLB lead in HRs with 17.  Jose Rijo is 9-1 with a 1.47 ERA.  The best performing obscurity is Padres starter Frank Seminara who's held opposing batters to a .170 average on his way to a 7-1 mark.  In real life, Seminara only pitched 163 innings in the bigs.

Haven't decided but currently leaning toward the Rockies over the Marlins.  The Rockies will make more trips to Candlestick and I won't have to look at Wayne Huizinga's face.

I noticed Cal Ripken Jr. was day-to-day with a sprained thumb but it appears he sat out a game earlier in the season.  He's currently hitting .226/.293/.327

Maybe he'll be left unprotected in the expansion draft

As of the end of June, the Orioles have opened up a gap on Toronto.  The Yankees and Red Sox are 17.5 and 20 games back respectively.  They're still probably on the ESPN Sunday Night game.  The Sox have Clemens but nobody else is having a good year.  The Yanks have Melido Perez and Scott Sanderson leading the staff but 20 year old Andy Pettite joined the starting rotation in late May.

The Twins have fallen back to the pack in the West.  The White Sox are in close pursuit 1 game back.  Frank Thomas whose OBP is still over .500 is carrying the team.  It doesn't look like the A's year.  The real-life divisional champs are mired in sixth place.

The NL East is now a four team race with the Cubs joining the fray.  It's a mediocre division with only the division leading Cardinals over .500.  The surprising Padres are still leading out West with a 5 game cushion over Houston and Cincinnati.  The Braves went 7-18 in June and have dropped to 4th.  Deion Sanders is 21 for 34 in stolen base attempts.  OOTP also shows him as Caucasian.  Prime Time is still on pace for a 4.0 WAR season.  We'll see if he leaves for football in the fall.

Rob Deer has 30 HRs on June 30th.  He's hitting .230 but is striking out less that 25% of the time.  The CYA leaders are Jack McDowell (11-1, 1.58 ERA) and Jose Rijo (13-2, 1.59 ERA).  The magical season of Frank Seminara continues but he's an obvious regression candidate.  There's no way he can maintain a .183 BABIP

Simmed to the All-Star break and the standings haven't changed much.  Baltimore, Minnesota, St. Louis and San Diego still lead the divisions.  The Padres lead has grown to 9.5 games over the Braves with the Dodgers, Reds and Astros all tied one game further back.  Oakland finally got above .500 but are still 8 games adrift.

In other news,

The Padres just bolstered their rotation by trading for Bob Ojeda.  He'll probably replace Doug Brocail or Jim Deshaies.

The Pirates will have to do without Barry Bonds for six weeks after his back injury.  Dave Clark is holding down the fort in LF until then.

Yeah, this is just about the most inconsequential thing I can do right now.

Can hardly wait til I screw up the expansion draft.

This makes me we wish we could have got an online thing going instead of stupid WIS.

Also, congrats to the Big Hurt on 11 steals at the ASB...most in a season was 7 and 32 for his career IRL.

Reached the end of July and Baltimore and San Diego have opened up comfortable leads in their divisions.  The Mets passed the Cardinals for the NL East lead while the Pirates have faded to 6.5 GB following the injury to Bonds.  His OOTP page describes Barry's personality as "knows how to put on the charm".   The Twins can't shake the White Sox but still lead.  Oakland is still 10.5 GB and needs to catch fire to get back into the race.   There's no wild card for another two years.

No huge trades happened at the deadline.  The Mets reacquired Frank Viola from Boston to help the back end of their rotation.  Sid Fernandez, Cone and Gooden have been terrific for them.  Darren Daulton went to Cincinnati in exchange for four minor leaguers including 24 year-old Trevor Hoffman.

Juan Gonzalez had a strong July with 11 HRs to overtake the slumping Rob Deer for the MLB lead with 37.  Frank Seminara's career year continues; he's now 11-4 with a 2.63 ERA.  The Cardinals have gotten good production out of a minor league random guy named Frank Speek who's struck out 80 in 54.2 IP.  In real life, Speek spent 1992 in A ball and was out of baseball one year later.

Danny Darwin's season goes from bad to worse.  He's currently 3-14 for the last place Red Sox and now this...

Danny Darwin will miss a week after a freak accident in his hotel room. Darwin woke early and when attempting to get up to close the curtains in his room, he tripped over a coffee table. The table toppled over and landed on his toes. MRI results were negative, but Darwin is still expected to be out for a week.

I'm now at Labor Day weekend 1992 and three out of four divisional leads are looking pretty safe.  San Diego has the best record in baseball at 87-44 and are 12.5 games up on the Reds.  The Giants have been mathematically eliminated and are only hitting .225 as a team.  The Twins have led the AL West all year keeping a 5.5 game margin to the White Sox.  The AL East has tightened up a little but the Orioles still are 6.5 games ahead.  Chris Hoiles is having a MVP season for the Birds.

The only tight race in the NL East opened up a little in the past couple of weeks as St. Louis has won 11 out of 12.  They're now 4 games ahead of the Mets with four head-to-head matchups coming up in September.  The Mets have been helped by Dave Winfield who's hit .273/.368/.471 since coming over in an early July trade for Dave Magadan.

I simmed to Sept 15 so I could play the Mets-Cardinals series but the Mets collapsed during those two weeks and now are only 1 game over .500, 9 games back of the Redbirds.

The AL West has tightened up though.  The Twins playing without an injured Kirby Puckett are now only 1.5 games up on Chicago and 4 ahead of Oakland.  The A's can cut it to 3 tonight with Ron Darling pitching vs. Mike Boddicker for the Twins.

Oakland beats Minnesota 6-5 in 16 innings on a bases loaded walk from Jose Canseco.  The Twins scored three in the 8th to tie it and one in the top of the 16th to go ahead but Tom Edens couldn't hold the lead in the bottom of the frame.

The White Sox couldn't capitalize on the Twins misfortune, losing 6-2 in the Bronx to remain 1.5 GB.

Final week of the 1993 season.  Where did the Expos come from?  They've gone 25-2 in September to close within 2 games of the Cardinals with a three game series coming up in St. Louis.  Pitching matchups are Kirk Reuter vs. Mark Clark, Dennis Martinez vs. Omar Olivares and Sergio Valdez vs. Jason Hisey.

ETA:  Hisey's pro career topped out at A ball.

The Expos took the first two of the series to tie for the divisional lead.  But the Cardinals came back from an early 3-0 deficit to take the finale 7-3.  Andres Galarraga hit a three-run homer against his old club.

The Cardinals' magic number is 3 with 3 to play against the 53-106 Phillies.

Montreal Expos are the NL 1992 East champions.  They swept the Cubs while the Redbirds dropped 2 of 3 to Philadelphia.

Barry Bonds put up 8.1 WAR in spite of missing 48 games.  There were two 20 game winners in each league: Jack McDowell, Mike Mussina, Jose Rijo and Steve Avery.  Tim Salmon and Mike Piazza led rookies in almost all categories.

It'll be Montreal vs. San Diego and Baltimore vs. Minnesota in the LCS.   None of the four made the playoffs in real life.

I gotta figure out how to export to CSV.

Twins beat the Orioles in 6.  Padres had to win two elimination games to beat the Expos in 7.

The WS is tied 3-3 with a game 7 coming up tonight in the Metrodome.  It'll be loud inside when Bob Ojeda faces John Smiley in the decider.

The Padres are the 1992 champions.  They put up 5 runs early against John Smiley.  The Twins chipped away at the lead bringing the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 8th but WS MVP Gary Sheffield hit a two run HR to put the game out of reach.

And now the expansion fun begins.  I have no idea how to do any of this.

The amateur draft was in December 1992 for some reason.  I picked Derrek Lee at 1.02 and a 290 pound HS catcher named Nate Dishington in the 2nd.  The only other recognizable names I drafted were Rey Ordonez, Lou Merloni and Billy Wagner.  I have no idea how historical talent gets randomized but I'm about to find out with Wagner.

Expansion draft results.  I tried to go for young "talent" while the Marlins drafted a number of old stars including Willie Wilson, Robin Yount, Kirk Gibson and Dickie Thon.  My team is more like the worst pack of baseball cards you ever bought.

I blew my entire free agent budget on Matt Williams because I have no idea what I'm doing.  I didn't realize Darrin Jackson was making $1.9M when I drafted him so I'm overpaying for the short side of a CF platoon.

The Mets have had a busy off-season signing Barry Larkin, Darren Daulton and Bobby Witt to FA contracts bringing their team payroll to $34M which is $11M more than the closest club.  I'm 27th in payroll at $9.4M with only the Brewers behind me.

The sim really likes signing late 30s players to multi-year contracts.  St. Louis re-signed 38 year old Ozzie Smith to a three year deal at the tenth highest AAV in baseball.

I have an offer out to Manuel Lee because I don't think Ruben Amaro's glove will cut it as my everyday shortstop.

This isn't starting off well.  OOTP put us on the road for a two game sweep by the Mets at Shea before coming back to Denver for the home opener.  Lost on Friday, won on Saturday as Mark Gardner went 8 for the W and then got stomped 13-3 in the finale.

Mark Whiten started strong but nobody else has except for Gardner I guess.  Jeff Manto is 1-17.  His backup is Jeff Huson so I don't expect a big change.

Took the first two of four from the Mets at home.  I can see myself burning out the sharp end of my bullpen.  The 789 combo of Steve Reed, Mercker and Brantley looks to be one of the relative strengths of this rather weak ballclub.  But hey, we're 3-4 and ahead of SF and LA in the West.

Matt Williams is off to a slow start.  I remember times when he was with the Giants where he looked terrible.

April 28, 1993

The Rockies ripped off six Ws in a row to even their record at 10-10.  Three of the wins were vs. Florida but still.  The last two wins came on walk off HRs at Mile High vs the Cubs.  The first was a 3 run pinch hit blast by red-hot Joe Oliver in a come from behind win.  The next night Darrin Jackson hit a 2 run homer to break an 8-8 tie.

I've brought up Scott Brosius to give me another option in the infield. Derrek Lee is tearing up AAA but I don't want to rush a 17 year.

As we approach the end of the month, Montreal and Atlanta lead the NL divisions.  Toronto leads the AL East by a game over Baltimore and the resurgent Red Sox.  There's a three way tie on top of the AL West between Texas, California and Seattle but the entire division is separated by only three games.  Moises Alou is off to a sizzling .468/.533/.797 start.

Jeff Huson is a complete steal in the 8th round. Going to be the glue for this team, on the field and off.

I lost a few games yesterday when the application hung but I'm back on it.  The Rockies have been feasting on the Marlins who have assembled a truly incompetent team.  Colorado aren't great but at least we're solid defensively.

Another three game sweep of Florida lifts the Rockies to a game over .500 at 13-12.  Matt Williams leads all of baseball with 27 RBI.  2B is still a black hole offensively with Manto, Huson and Brosius with OPS+ of 49, 54 and 12 respectively.  The AAA Sky Sox are off to a hot start at 10-5.  Rey Ordonez or Bill Spiers are the options for the next man up at second.

May 10, 1993.

We're still one game over .500 after taking two out of three from the Braves at Mile High.  Matt Williams is still leading the NL in RBI with 34.  Dwight Smith was suspended for four games for his part in a bench-clearing brawl but left-hitting OF are my area of depth.  Joe Oliver has a 17 game hitting streak going.  My pitching has mostly been cromulent; Al Leiter is the only guy who really stinks but he's out of options so he's got a longer leash than normal.

Elsewhere in baseball, Toronto has opened up a 4 game lead over Baltimore.  Seattle has the best record in baseball at 22-9.  Montreal leads the NL East by 2 games with Moises Alou, Larry Walker and Brian Deak (?) the top three NL position players in WAR.  In my division, the Braves are 2 up on Houston and 2.5 up on the defending champion Padres.

This week we have a four game home series against the Giants then three at Riverfront vs. the Reds.  SF has Bobby Bonilla now while Cal Ripken Jr. plays for the Cincinnati.

May 17, 1993

Split four with the Giants and had took two from the Reds to put us at 20-17.  The Reds series was the first of a 12 game road trip.  OOTP gave us Sunday off for some reason but I'm not complaining.  The Giants series featured a rain-shortened shutout from Pete Smith which will probably the only complete game shutout for the Rockies for a while.  I'm still managing using 2019 pitch counts and bullpen usage.

Headed to San Diego and a weekend in LA.

On my first real cold streak with 6 losses in 7 games.  The Rockies are still a game over .500 but things aren't looking as good as when we were ranked #4 in the power rankings.  Lost Kent Mercker to a back injury while on the road trip but he'll be eligible to come off the DL this week.  Finally sent the slumping Jeff Manto to AAA and brought up Ruben Amaro Jr. to replace him.

Montreal has opened a 10 game gap in the East while Atlanta, San Diego and Houston are battling for NL West supremacy.  The AL East looks like it'll be Baltimore and Toronto again this year with Boston and the Yanks both under .500 again.  All 7 teams in the AL West are within 8.5 games of the lead.  Mark McGwire plays for the Blue Jays now and is leading the AL in HR and RBI.

How is David Nied doing?

I recall that he was supposed to be a cut above most expansion picks because he had been blocked in Atlanta by a stable of HOF'ers.

I'd love to hear why you loathe him so
Sure but total hijack sorry.

Sports to me has everything to do with the context of time/place in your life. The 1 game playoff of 1999 was the single most heartbroken I’ve ever been over sports.

The backstory isn’t that exciting. I was in high school and we moved away during the school year for my dad’s job. Messed up my HS baseball and I had no friends at the start. But the Reds were still playing at 7 every night even in our new town and my dad had bought me DTV with the Extra Innings package for me to watch every game as some sort of peace offering. Watching the surprising ‘99 Reds in a town I knew nobody, I was emotionally attached to them more than anyone ever should have been.  That whole week is still surreal in my head. The rain delays in Milwaukee. Then Al Leiter just ripping the whole season to pieces in 1 day.

Since then, I’ve come back to Cincinnati and even had full season tickets, but have never been more connected to a team than that one.

I can relate to this on a personal level that probably few can. I understand completely.

Also, @Eephus, I vote that we put this bum on the block. Leiter can't divide us.

Nied is slotted as the Braves' SP3 with Tom Glavine out for the year.  He's been solid but his 3.84 ERA is almost a full point better than his FIP.  Nied has benefited from a .230 BABIP to post a 1.08 WHIP so there's probably some regression ahead.  He's also giving up nearly 2 HR/9.

Leiter has been the Rockies' worst reliever but he's out of options and there aren't many other options at AAA.  I brought up Jose Mesa when Mercker got hurt but Joe Table hasn't been very good in a tiny sample.

I put in a waiver claim on Mike Timlin but lost out to the Cardinals by virtue of having a better record.
