Desert Island Album Draft - 15th Anniversary Edition - 50 Rounds in the books, sign up now for KP's listening program (9 Viewers)

Found the list. I'm familiar with a lot of these so going to try Spoon and Muse in the morning as I have heard they are well liked. Pick 2 others for me to try.
Awesome. Here are my recommendations:

#1 - Free - Fire and Water

#2 will be based on your mood and how far out of your comfort zone you want to go (I remember your picks favor metal and hard rock)

Prog - Genesis (Selling ...), or Yes (Close to the Edge)

80s - The Cure (Boys Don’t Cry), or Erasure (Two Ring Circus)

Hip Hop - Tribe (Low End Theory), or OutKast (Aquemini), Run the Jewels 2

Rock/Alternative - Wolfmother, Sublime

Beware any randomizing since a number of my later picks have lots of holes in them.

Enjoy!

I'll give you 2 of my live albums to listen to- REO Speedwagon and Tedeschi Trucks

I was a big REO fan back in the day but haven't really listened to them much over the last several years; and although I've heard of Tedeschi Trucks Band, I'm not super well versed so that makes me happy.

I'm going to listen to two other bands I've heard before but pretty much their greatest hits (or hit):

Tragically Hip - Road Apples     I'm pretty much familiar with their one hit song and not much else.  Looking forward to hearing this entire album.

Santana - Santana     I suspect I really only know their classic rock radio hits.  Looking over the tracklist I only recognize one song title on this album so I suspect I'm going to love this one.

i would like @The Dreaded Marco to suggest 1 or 2, i will randomize 1 or 2, and pick 1 or 2 on my own. cool?

ETA: a rough check shows me that his island mostly has a lot of 21st C darlings that i dont like or dont know, so it should be fun
I don't want to pick 2 albums for you that you already have heard and/or know you already hate (or like :)  ).

Please look at my list and let me know which albums you're not familiar with.

Please give me an idea of genres of music you like, don't like, and any artists/albums on the list that you are already familiar with (so I don't choose those).
I am open to all types of music.

Would avoid the following as being ones I'm already plenty familiar with:  Fleetwood Mac, New Pornographers, Vampire Weekend, Toots and the Maytals, St. Vincent.

Would also avoid the following as ones I have no desire to know better:  Fall Out Boy (due to that guy's hair), Dave Matthews (for dumping their #### in the Chicago River), Ariana Grande (because she makes Otis grande), and Sigur Ros (for no good reason).

All others welcome.

@Bonzai - I highlighted the ones that I had written down.  There is a varying degree of familiarity from just a passing knowledge, maybe heard a couple songs, to flat out having 0 clue what they are.   I was thinking about going 3 and 3 - so what 3 would you suggest?
Let's go with..

Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady

Margot & The Nuclear So and So's - The Dust of Retreat

Built To Spill - Keep It Like A Secret

I know the 2 hits from the Free album but that's it. Paul Rogers is one of my fav vocalist s so should enjoy. I have and like a couple of the others you suggested and don't like rap so going with either Genesis or Yes as my 2nd.

50.31 - Young Galaxy - Shapeshifting (2011)

I've gone back and forth on #50, but I think this album encapsulates what has become very clearly my wheelhouse of the past decade or so, the synthy dream pop.  I'm wavering a bit on which album of theirs to take, but this one has what I consider their magnum opus track and one of my personal favorite songs of the decade in "We Have Everything".  A fitting capstone for the island.

"We Have Everything"

"Peripheral Visionaries"

@Uruk-Hai I'm going to choose Black Joe & The Honey Bears for my first dive into your Island. I liked the song I heard on the shuffle and made a mental note about listening to the full record anyway. If you have suggestions for some, that would be great.

ETA: It says self-titled on spreadsheet but it seems those songs are on "Tell ‘em what your name is”. I only see a self titled EP on Spotify. I’m listening to this (“Tell ‘em”) album now and will base my review on that.
The bolded is the correct title. I screwed up when I first took it and listed it as self-titled

Let's go with..

Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady

Margot & The Nuclear So and So's - The Dust of Retreat

Built To Spill - Keep It Like A Secret
Nice - thanks!   I am excited to tackle these.     Mingus was the jazz album I was leaning to as well, never heard of that middle one, and only a peripheral knowledge of the last one.   I THINK a BtS song came up on a shuffle at work and I liked it, but even that I am not sure if I am remembering right.

I might end up with 7+, as I am having a hard time deciding.  The others I have:

The Band - The Band   = perfect opportunity to sit down with a full album after not being familiar with, but liking the couple songs that have come up on the playlist

Pavement - Brighten the Corners  = I have basically only heard S&E and like it, but have never dug farther for some reason.

Okkervil River = well, one of my draft doppelgangers said he liked a song, right?  I THINK have heard some, but probably not since it came out.

Royal Headache - High = I have 0 clue what this is.

Desert Island Take IX (Or here come the 90's!)

Pick 25:  Various Artists, Wayne's World Soundtrack (1992).  Tia Carrere's version of Ballroom Blitz is almost as rockin' as the red dress she wears while playing it in the movie :excited: .  And hey, look, it also sneaks a copy of Bohemian Rhapsody along with it, score!  Lots of good stuff here.

Pick 26:  **** Dale, Tribal Thunder (1993).  The King of Surf Guitar returns!  His ability to absolutely shred is legendary, especially when you consider he's not only playing that guitar backwards for lefties like Jimi Hendrix, but also he never restrung it for lefties so the strings are upside down!

Pick 27:  Eric Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, The Great Fantasy Adventure Album (1994).  OK, I'm not going to ANY island without this album.  Kunzel and Telarc put out a lot of awesome collections of great movie themes, but this one is also a lot of my favorite movies all in one place!  And I had to sneak at least one classical album of grandiose music in!

@Buffaloes it's your island.  I'll have a Brandy Alexander and some album suggestion, please!  Or however you want to do this.

@Long Ball Larry you are welcome here to my Crater Lake home.  Cocktails and hors d'oeuvres will be served at six.  Dinner to follow.  Dress is ever so casual.
I would suggest EOB - Earth

and I looked at your island picks to see what might align with it.

If you are not super familiar with Beck - Morning Phase I'd say that one as well.

I got @shuke, which should be fun. I probably won't get to listen until tomorrow.

I'm gonna start with the Jayhawks' Mockingbird Time. I've heard maybe a dozen songs by these guys over the years and liked every one of them - don't know why I haven't gone deeper into their catalog.

Shuke, if you have any recommendations, throw 'em out there. I know most of the classic rockers you chose pretty well, so maybe one of the others?

Rolled a 13 on the randomizer and got this, which looks completely amazing tbh and right up my alley. Can't wait to dig in

@Eephus Please give me another suggestion from your island. no rules...whatever you are feeling at the moment

Eta: I think the only one that I would say I'm thoroughly knowledgeable of is new order substance
@eephus did you have theses virgin ambient comps back in the day?  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJjXNiaPF6g

reminds me of your toop selection.  I was pretty deep into this stuff in college. were you into the asphodel somnium comps swarm of drones,  throne of drones etc?

@Uruk-Hai I'm going to choose Black Joe & The Honey Bears for my first dive into your Island. I liked the song I heard on the shuffle and made a mental note about listening to the full record anyway. If you have suggestions for some, that would be great.

ETA: It says self-titled on spreadsheet but it seems those songs are on "Tell ‘em what your name is”. I only see a self titled EP on Spotify. I’m listening to this (“Tell ‘em”) album now and will base my review on that.
I know you're pretty well-rounded, but looking at the list of what you chose - maybe one of:

Rosanne Cash - The List

Trombone Shorty - Parking Lot Symphony

Marcus King - El Dorado

I'm going to listen to one of @PIK95's albums next.  I rolled a 33 which gives us.

Tesla    -    The Great Radio Controversy    (1989)

I'm pretty sure I own a copy of this on vinyl.  1989 was a dark year for promotional copies on vinyl as most labels had switched to CD or even cassettes by then.  I must have found this in a cheap bin of promo LPs.  I'm certain I haven't listened to it since at least 1992 when most of my vinyl went into storage.
I picked up the cd of this from Craigslist yesterday fwiw.  I played it most of the way through as I was driving.

I have two in mind from Tasker's list, but I'm waiting for his choices first, because if he chooses one of them, then I get a shot at another choice.  :excited:

@Eephus please give me 2 suggestions. whatever works. I am going to take 2 after that and then rando for at least one more beyond that. I did see the one I picked earlier is a double album :excited:

gonna give CD1 and CD2 a spin on that one

I didn't forget about the rest of your albums, @MAC_32

FUN. - SOME NIGHTS (2012)

COVER -  still didn't give me a clue to what I was getting into.  had a bit of old school 50s vibe to it, or the start of a porno, I couldn't decide which.

ALBUM -  Is this where I be polite and say "it's not for me"?  ;)     Don't get me wrong, it was a fun. ride (get it?? !), but I think the big road block for me was his voice.   There were a couple that I could see growing on me because of the music - the highlights for me were Some Nights and It Gets Better.  Those were decent, but for me it was a bit downhill from there.  Nothing outright making wanting to skip or anything, more just his voice holding me back I think.    The KP rating would be 4/10 for me - which is basically a tad below average for me, but there was a couple songs and enough there that I think I would recommend to others I think would like it.

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN - THE RIVER (1980)

COVER -  Bruce looking 1/2 pouty, 1/2 badass here.   I still usually question album covers with just a pic on it.

ALBUM -   This was long, but damn good.   I will be honest - I thought was in a little trouble as I didn't love the opener.  Something about the chorus on The Ties That Bind that grated on me a tad, but after that the trip was great.   Seems like I am drawn a little bit more to the slower/sad side of Bruce so a lot of the stand outs for me are on that spectrum - The River, Point Blank, Drive All Night, Wreck on the Highway, and a couple others I forgot to write down.    Always impresses me with these songs how he is able to transport me and basically paint that story in my head as I listen.  Remember again, I am not one to pay too much to the lyrics right away, but Bruce is able to transport me right away.    Easy 8/10 here.

STURGILL SIMPSON - SOUND & FURY (2019)

COVER - Another bad ### cover from Sturgill.  Explosions and cars and #### !!

ALBUM -  Yeah, this was a surprise.   What an interesting step up (probably not the right phrasing) of music.   I will be honest - I was expecting a little more rockin', but not quite the mix of genres as he threw out there on this album.   I mean #### - that sounds like a Daft Punk song at the start of Make Art Not Friends.  I don't know about him - how was this album received by fans??    I think the country-ish song on there was maybe All Said and Done?   I guess Mercury in Retrograde has "twangy" vocals, but then it's backed by synths so it's still interesting.   Anyway - really dug this journey and will for sure try out anything new he throws out there.  mac made this anti-country guy a bit of a convert.   I really liked the openers and closer and Best Clockmaker on Mars.   Again, probably around an 8/10 for me.  I haven't kept up on newer stuff, so just assuming this is one of the better albums I listened to last year.

I poked my head over there today and saw you, NV, and 80s.  I do think if you all keep at it just a little longer, you'll get stealthy to see the error of his ways.  Just a few more posts.

(That guy should be at the top of every ignore list, no matter your perspective.)
I'm curious but not curious enough to dip my toe in those waters and find out.
