Did you have an adult theater in your town like Hill Valley? (1 Viewer)

I have watched Back to the Future at least 7 times since being home due to Covid (Ive also watched Friends with Benefits, 13 going on 30, Rounders,  Mean Girls and Shes all That at least 3 times each. Who knew they just play the same stuff every day)

Anyway, when Marty and Jennifer are making out early in the movie, the theater is in the background. The movie being played is An American Orgy and it has XXX on the side.

I did not have an adult theater near my town. Just wondering how prevelant it was or were the Directors trying to tell us something about Hill Valley

Trivia: the reason that the theater marquee shows "Orgy American Style" is because one of the actors in that film (yes, it was a real film, released in 1973) was the guy who played the bum on the park bench in the BTTF films (Buck Flower).

Travis Bickle says he did. Cybil Shepherd went with him to his last picture show.

Seriously, of all the memorable moments in that movie the one I'll always remember (I think I shut it off and didn't care) is when Bickle takes Shepherd to the porn movie at Times Square on a casual date.  It reminds me of Vonnegut's Breakfast of Champions with the guy just released from prison and the sheep. It's that if we're not educated or socialized in some way, these malfunctions of the spirit occur, and they're sad to those of us who know better.

In the film, Bickle has a sense of right and wrong, it's just never socialized at all. He's a product of a completely antisocial society blah blah blah...you get the picture.

Back when I was a kid and they still published the movie times in the newspaper (Late 80s / early 90s I’d guess) I recall there being an Adult Theatre with a few films listed, might have even been two

Awesome fun fact

Grew up in Hollywood, FL for a good chunk of my formative years and there used to be a Twin-Adult theater called the Pink #####cat and it was in the same strip center as a grocery store AND it was right next door to an old school Pizza Hut(I #### you not) when people used to dine in for the most part and the pizza actually tasted really good.

I had to be 6-7 yrs old and I remember I wanted to look in once at what was going on and this cute girl was working the ticket booth and just sort of waived a finger at me like "No No No"...the good ole days.

A+ thread idea

My suburb did not as far as I knew, but whenever going to a concert at The Great American Music Hall the O'Farrell Theater was right next door.

In my town ...no

Near my town ...yes

I remember being a teenager and thinking if we hung near it we would get to see some really hot women :lmao:

believe or not, we had a XXX drive-in theater on Rte 133 in nearby Georgetown MA. NO idea how they got that allowed, but it was there a while. one thing i liked about pornos of the 70s is that for a short time there was a movement to make X-rated versions of classic stories - Three Musketeers, Alice in Wonderland and such. me Ma had taken us to every Disney animated feature when we were kids, if it was at a drive-in, all the better, so i felt duty-bound to inform her that there was a new, live-action version of Pinocchio - one of her favorites - playing at the 133, which had just switched to their adult format without Ma knowing. you'll never guess what grew every time he told a lie, to the point he was knocking tables over with it. Now, me Ma crossed herself or said a rosary over even the mildest curse words, but she was also a good sport and took seeing just how much of a real boy Pinocchio had become with good humor.

Big difference between an adult theater in NYC and one in suburban town of Twin Valley.

Oh, no doubt. It was just such a memorable scene that I think of Taxi Driver every time I think of actual adult theaters and the patronage thereof. I have no idea why it would be in Back To The Future, unless the past needed cleaning up for reasons such as the normalization of pornography.

Or perhaps they just threw that in there, which is the most likely thing.

And Times Square pornography was legendary. I used to go there in the late '80s before Times Square became a tourist trap and it was filled with sex shops and the like. I used to get good rock t-shirts up there.

In all honesty, I was hoping someone would catch the The Last Picture Show reference. I always wanted to see that movie. About being in small town Texas and growing up in a conservative town, from best what I understand.

It's just such a weird thing in a movie that's trying to be mostly a family movie. Though a family movie with an attempted rape, a staged sexual assault a father and son plan on their wife/mom and an incestuous crush.

What was the reference? I have seen Last Picture Show but didn't catch the reference. Really good movie too.

Yes..the ##### Cat Theatre between 6-7 mile in Detroit.  Was an old gas station turned into a little movie theatre.

There was a drive in adult theater on the county line between Marin and Sonoma, iirc right on  hwy 101. I never convinced my folks to let me go...but I do recall a solitary house on a hill overlooking the screen. Always thought- some day. Some day that house will be mine.

Oh yeah, I get the weird dichotomy of a family movie in a family town having porn. That might be the sign something is amiss.

I wasn't making an allusion or grand reference. I simply said that Bickle took Cybil Shepherd to his "last picture show," which, given the movie's chronology, is probably true.

We also had an XXX drive-in movie theater.  The Berlin Drive-In in Berlin, CT.  They surrounded the perimeter with something like a 20-25 ft tall wooden fence so you couldn't see in and there was this side road that went along the back of it.  Every weekend, some kid would head through the woods and tear down 3-4 planks so you could drive by and see in.  Naturally, every horny 16 yr old was taking that side road home at the end of the night and naturally, there'd usually be a cop somewhere flashing his side light at you and yelling at you to go home over the car loudspeaker.  It was all worth the 3 second glimpse of that amazing 80's XXX magic.

Kids today have it easy.

POTW nominee

There was a theater that showed family-friendly films during but played hardcore X movies at night.  Does that count?

My irrigation guy said he worked in the business in California years ago, and said they would hose off the coins at the end of each night.

Wonder if they ever mixed up showings of the aforementioned Alice In Wonderland, or Pinocchio.

When I was a toddler (early 80's), my parents had an apartment next to one. My older brother (7ish? at the time) had the only bedroom overlooking the XXX drive in. Mom said it took her forever to realize why it was so easy to get him to go to his room to go to bed.

No, but I do have the worst Gentlemen's club ever, like in the history of mankind, within a few miles.. so I have that going for me.

ETA: or so I hear  :oldunsure:

Lived in NE Philly as a kid and there was a drive in up on Roosevelt Blvd just over the county line. Naturally it had a big old high wooden fence, but there was a slight hill heading north and you could see a little. I was often told to close my eyes until I was told to open them. The interesting thing about this drive in was there was a Hilton just north of it with a whole lot of windows facing the screen. You could always see lights on in most of them and occasionally a little more skin than what was showing on the screen. Good times.

Add to it sneaking a peek at dirty magazines at one’s local convenience store, and truer words have seldom been spoken.
I remember when my parents bought one of those early massive satellite dishes, thing looked like it was from NASA. I was in college at the time. They had it hooked up so whatever was on the screen in their house was also viewable in the apartments they owned next door.

I had come home for the weekend with 3 or 4 friends (this was like 82 or 83). One guy from LI was insistent on checking out the scrambled porn. So we sat in our living room staring fixedly at the scrambled screen waiting for that brief instant of clarity. My parents weren’t in the house at the time, it turned out they were at the apartments working. They apparently had a TV on and, when they returned to their house, had a great big laugh at all of our expenses. Lot of red faces that day.

When I was in HS, our cable provider added the Spice network. We found that if you pressed the + and - channel change quick enough (one after the other), you would be able to see the screen for a second.

I held the record amongst all the rest of my perv friends for 2 minutes +

It was a simpler time

Ah the days of the old push button cable boxes where we figured out that pushing 2 channels in got you a 80% clear picture.   Electric Blue....

XXX drive-in in a nearby town (Litchfield NH). Only went once. Got kicked out. Entry was pay-per-person. They saw me let a couple kids out of the trunk of the car after pulling into a spot.

Used to watch ECW 60 seconds at a time when we had our giant satellite dish.

The teaser promo they would play is etched in my mind. EXTREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEME.
