Other than bigotry, there is no reason for any of this. Bringing international students into the US helps us in so many different ways.

The intangible effects of exposing people from around the world to life in America are possibly the biggest loss.

Trump doesn't care about the long-term effects of anything. He'd rather have the talking heads on the news rally the xenophobic base about Trump being, "strong on immigration and terrorism." He thinks that will help him get elected.
Oh, and his close advisor Stephen Miller is a racist and xenophobe.
