Power hungry city council members in Berkeley, CA pass an ordinance to govern how and where local markets place candy and snacks on their shelves.    Amongst the meddling points made in the discussion are the following:

  • A reference to something called the "sugar sweet and beverage commission"
  • Call this ordinance "light touch" governance
  • a reference to "technical support" being provided by some city agency to grocers
  • cite approved items to display a checkout as tasty, healthy and profitable
  • some obtuse reference to COVID-19
Item #16 on the agenda, the meddling starts at 3:16:00:  http://berkeley.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?publish_id=f8b8da28-fdc3-11ea-b6a9-0050569183fa

I have a much bigger problem with this than I do the Soda Tax.
Agreed, at least with the soda tax nonsense, the center of the issue was taxation, which is at least an authentic government function.

The prescriptions and preaching being handed out in the Berkeley ordinance have nothing to do with any legitimate government activity.
