Dynasty & Redraft: RB La'Mical Perine, Jets (1 Viewer)

Jets selected Florida RB Lamical Perine with the No. 120 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Cousin to Bengals RB Samaje Perine and Jaguars OLB Myles Jack, Perine (5'11/216) led the Gators in rushing in his final three seasons despite falling short of 140 carries in every year. While he tested as an average Joe across the board at Indy's combine, PFF charted him with just one drop on 55 targets in 2019, which were inexplicably 14 more than his previous three years combined. Those proven receiving chops combined with his burning desire to pass-block could land him a third-down role ahead of Josh Adams or Trenton Cannon. Unfortunately, he'll only be serviceable for fantasy if he somehow unseats Le'Veon Bell given the latter's whopping 77 percent snap rate from last season.

Jets signed fourth-round RB Lamical Perine to a four-year contract.

Perine (5'11/216) led Florida in rushing his final three seasons despite never reaching 140 carries. While he tested as an average Joe across the board at Indy's Combine, PFF charted Perine with just one drop on 55 targets in 2019, which were inexplicably 14 more than his previous three years combined. Those proven receiving chops combined with Perine's burning desire to pass-block could land him a third-down role ahead of Josh Adams or Trenton Cannon. Unfortunately, he'll only be serviceable for fantasy if he can cut into Le'Veon Bell's role on third down. Considering coach Adam Gase's clear antipathy for Bell, it's not outside the realm of possibility.

Who's the Jets starting RB? Fantasy outlooks for Frank Gore, La'Mical Perine after Le'Veon Bell's release

Excerpt:

La'Mical Perine fantasy outlook

Perine was drafted in the fourth round out of Florida, and he's been sparsely used after missing much of the preseason due to a high ankle sprain. In his four games, his has 17 touches for 55 total yards, and he didn't see the field in Week 5 when Bell returned.

The 5-11, 216-pound Perine wasn't a dominant runner in college, rushing for 2,485 yards and 5.0 yards per carry over four seasons. However, he caught 40 balls for 262 yards during his senior year and fits the bill as a potential PPR specialist in fantasy leagues. If New York decides to try out Perine as a featured back, he'll have flex value in all formats. That seems likely to happen at some point, but this could be a frustrating committee for several more weeks, especially if the Jets do something like bring Ballage back.

I am curious what happens. Logically, Perine should get a ton of work but he has Gase in the way. I am forced to start him this week so I am hoping for the best case scenario.
I picked him up in a league with deep benches and any RB who might possibly have a decent chance of sniffing any sort of carries is rostered. Worth a shot!

I used logic when I threw Perine out in my lineup when my options got low that Thursday game a few weeks ago, thinking old 37 year old Gase on a short week with a team going nowhere now would like to take a look at Perine. I then watched Ballage blow pass blocks all night,  Gore run a wheel route and Perines snap count get cut in half from the previous week.

My opinion is we see a little uptick in Perine's usage but Gase is going to go down with this guy and his guy is Gore and this putrid offense can barely support a RB less yet two.

I still like Perine a great deal as a low cost dynasty stash but also for this season. Maybe Gase surprises me in a positive way for once but I'm holding on in redraft mainly in hopes he finally gets fired in a few weeks and the new coach does what he should,  play Perine to get him experience and see what they got as this team should be looking to the future and not wasting snaps on Gore.

Why? This is the perfect time for the Jets to evaluate the talent that is Frank Gore. Now with Bell out of the way they can line Gore up everywhere and and have him slam into the backs of his offensive line and push the pile.

To be fair since Gore will likely play until he is 60 technically he is still pretty early in his career so may be a good time to get a closer look at him.

i need a rb play this week, and i'd love to think this kid will get 10-15 touches but i dont trust gase enough

Why would he suddenly now get work?  Bell's been out since week 1.  If they were going to play him wouldn't they have done it by now?
Not saying he will play more but he was out with an injury the first few weeks of the season, missed a lot of camp so was probably behind, and they shed Ballage for Ty Johnson since the last time Bell was out and Ballage was awful but Gase still kept trying to use him as his main third down guy.

Worst Gase scenario

:goodposting:

He was a 4th round dynasty rookie flier for me, so I'm hoping to get a gauge on whether he's worth a roster spot. Other than Gase comments this week though, I'm not clear why he would get work now and not when Bell was on IR. Then again, I also don't understand the benefit of riding Gore/Ballage to a 2-14 season.

It suggests that not only do you have a placeholder in Gore with next to no tread left on the tires but the guy they envision taking over isn't even drafted yet.

Definitely possible. Also, could be Gase factor at play. The list of players who have flourished under his coaching is pretty grim.

Ty Johnson might be the sneaky add. They claimed him off waivers just before jettisoning Ballage. Ballage came in and played ahead of Perine almost immediately. Once Johnson is up to speed, he might get that Ballage role of third down and hurry up offense, which with this Jets team may be the more valuable role.

It’s also plausible to me that Johnson is more talented than Perine.  He produced more in college until his senior year when he battled injuries, and then was drafted into a mess with Patricia and the Lions. Worth a dart IMO.

Yeah I've added Johnson in my deep dynasty leagues. I'm not sure anyone will be able to get consistent yards in this offense, so I like the idea of targeting the most explosive of the 3.

Plus, he kinda reminds me of Kenyan Drake before he broke out right after the surprise Ajayi trade.

I would not say it's not plausible that Johnson could not be more talented then Perine. I personally don't think so, view Perine as having a much more well rounded game and Johnson as the more athletically explosive player.  I view Johnson as one of those odd RB's who seems more like a COP but can't pass protect or has shown much as a receiver.

But the major difference to me between Ty Johnson and why Ballage was used is that Ballage is a Gase guy. Like Gore. That's why he was so insistent on trying to play Ballage in key spots and Johnson won't have benefit of being a Gase guy.

I would add I saw Perine going for in $150 range of $1,000 blind bidding in a lot of my redraft leagues this week. I'd rather spend $1 on Johnson then $150 on Perine in redraft, but all things being equal I'd rather take Perine by a lot.

But I do think your recommendation of Johnson, especially to people who could not get Perine, is a very solid call.

I know nothing of Perine but I saw Ty Johnson in Detroit last year and while I was impressed with his burst, he didn't seem to know what to do with it.  I am not sure there is anything there with Ty.

Me neither. Odds are the Jets starting RB in 2021 isn’t on the roster yet.

At least Johnson is a pretty elite athlete. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah for dynasty, I think both backs should be added as spice to a bigger trade as soon as they show anything. For redraft, I think either is worth a stash at the end of bench spot. We know the Jets offense stinks and Gase will give Gore way more carries than he should but there is room for a younger back to carve out a significant role. Look at the chances Ballage got. Perine or Ty Johnson could certainly do more with touches than Ballage ever did. Ty Johnson was in Detroit such a limited time and I think Detroit are bad at managing their roster (they cut Fulgam, Ty Johnson and Jason Huntley after drafting them without ever giving them a chance to develop) so I shouldn't judge him yet. He is certainly the better athlete.

Lamical Perine rushed seven times for 27 yards in the Jets' Week 6 loss to the Dolphins.

He added two catches for nine yards on three targets a week after not playing on offense and seeing zero touches. Frank Gore is still for some reason leading this backfield, seeing 15 touches Sunday, but Perine deserves a longer look atop the depth chart in the aftermath of the Le'Veon Bell release. He should be added in 12-team leagues. The Jets host the Bills in Week 7.

Jets head coach Adam Gase said the team wants to get RB Lamical Perine "more and more carries."

Gase said he worked Ty Johnson into the backfield fold after a bad drop by Perine on a screen pass because he didn't want Perine's confidence to go south. Interesting strategy. “I know there were a couple of opportunities that Perine will probably go back and look at and wish he could have that play back," Gase said after the Jets' Week 6 loss to Miami. "We just gotta keep getting him more and more carries. Hopefully in the next game, we can get the carries the way we want them.” Gase seems intent on Perine as the team's primary ball carrier. But as long as Frank Gore has a pulse, he's going to eat into Perine's workload.

what in the actual #### does this mean??? Does he think Perine is a small child who dropped his ice cream or something?

If you read between the lines of what Gase said. He is saying Perine isn’t ready to play in the NFL. If I have a student who makes a mistake on something I trust they are actually capable of, I encourage them, give them some instruction and put them right back into the situation again. The only time I cut a kid off and don’t give them another shot is when I believe I’ve misjudged the situation and don’t think the kid can handle task.

Perine is perfectly capable of catching a screen pass and one drop doesn’t change that. Gase is a ####### moron. Nothing new here.

Lamical Perine had 11 carries for 39 yards and a touchdown and caught 2-of-3 targets for 16 yards in Week 7 against Buffalo; playing 70 percent of the team's offensive snaps in Week 7 against the Bills.

The big game comes after Adam Gase said he wanted to get Perine more involved. Frank Gore played 28 percent of the team's snaps as Perine also saw more touches than Frank Gore and vultured a goal-line touchdown from five yards out. He was one of the few bright spots for the Jets in Sunday's kickfest. With the Jets looking towards 2021, Perine's role should continue to grow and be useful for running back-needy fantasy players next week against KC.

Frank Gore (hand) is questionable for Week 8 against the Chiefs.

Gore was limited on Wednesday, downgraded to DNP on Thursday, and limited again for Friday. Gore's absence on Sunday would obviously entrench La'Mical Perine into a bell-cow role after the rookie played a season-high 40 snaps in Week 7. Note that OC Dowell Loggains will continue to call plays in Week 8 against Kansas City.

Lamical Perine Week 8 Outlook - Jets at Chiefs

Gore has now totaled 26 touches in the two games without Le'Veon Bell on the roster, though he may be losing his grip on the primary running back job. Perine out-snapped him 40 to 16 in their Week 7 game against the Bills, and that was in a neutral gamescript throughout. Against the Chiefs, you know they're going to fall behind, so who's running the pass routes? Perine has run double the routes that Gore has over the last two weeks combined, including a three to one ratio in Week 7. Running backs have amassed 1,144 total yards against the Chiefs, which ranks as the third-most in the league. That means there's been 163.4 total yards up for grabs to running backs every game. Volume is the biggest concern with the Jets backfield, as the running backs have combined to average just 21.6 touches per game. So, even if you project Gore to get just 10 carries, it's a giant chunk of the pie. The Chiefs have allowed 4.82 yards per carry and 6.76 yards per target, which are both above the league average, so efficiency should be better than usual for the Jets, who average 3.87 yards per carry and 4.52 yards per target. Perine is probably the preferred option here, but I don't anticipate Gore simply going away. Consider Perine a low-end RB3 while Gore is a middling RB4.

Lamical Perine rushed eight times for 27 yards in the Jets' Week 8 loss to the Chiefs, adding two receptions for six additional yards.

Perine drew Frank Gore to a touch standstill, though Gore out-carried him 10-8. Perine isn't exactly blowing the doors off the building, but it remains baffling why an 0-8 team would continue to shovel carries into Gore's 37-year-old furnace. Perine needs to be the clear and obvious lead back going forward. We have no idea if it will actually happen. The Patriots are a bad Week 9 matchup.

Lamical Perine rushed six times for 19 yards and caught both of his targets for 19 additional yards in the Jets' Week 9 loss to the Patriots.

Perine continues to play behind veteran Frank Gore for whatever reason, as Gore out-carried the rookie 12-6 in this one and also saw two targets in the pass game. Until Perine passes Gore, he's off the fantasy radar. Perhaps the Jets will use the bye to get Perine more acclimated in the offense. That's probably more wishful thinking.

Was holding just in case we see the shift from Gore to Perine. Nope. Now a bye week.

Was hoping maybe he'd be a flex option down the stretch.

Dumpsville.

ESPN's Rich Cimini reports Lamical Perine "will be the featured back over the remainder of the season as the organization tries to determine if he can be a future RB1."

Perine has been operating as the No. 2 back behind veteran Frank Gore, which is a classic Adam Gase decision. Like Cimini writes, the Jets need to see if their young players have any juice and times ticking. Perine, a fourth-round rookie, could see double-digit touches down the stretch. Of course, touches in this offense are low value, making Perine only a bench hold in 12-team leagues.

Jets coach Adam Gase said RB La'Mical Perine suffered a high-ankle sprain in Week 11 against the Chargers.

Perine will presumably miss a handful of games. The rookie was expected to be "unleashed" after the team's bye but instead handled eight carries prior to injury. Ty Johnson and Josh Adams could be involv...who are we kidding? Adam Gase is simply going to lean on Frank Gore for the rest of the season no matter who's available behind him. It's possible Perine misses the rest of New York's games given the team's handling of injuries and recovery time.
