  1. Hope you peeps are doing well. I can't quite say why I've been so MIA lately (outside of my one Christmas update) but it's probably just a combination of being busy with Baby Harris, COVID-life stress leading to an overall poor mental state, deaths in the family, work craziness/starting a new job, and figuring out our lives after deciding that we're moving back to Chicago.... Baby Harris aka Eloise: Before little E came along and people said that having kids was the best thing ever and they're so great, life will never be the same, blah blah blah, I would just think yeah, right, "these pe

  3. Many years ago I got a speed trap ticket on I-10 in between Houston and San Antonio in a little town called Luling. I was so angry about it I spent time researching different tactics to beat speeding tickets. I wound up settling on the "prove the calibration of the device that calibrated the radar" defense and took a day off from work to drive 150 miles to go fight it. On the day of the "trial" no one was at the "courthouse" when I arrived to hear the case. They couldn't believe I was really going to contest it. They literally called the judge in and radioed the officer to come testify. I a

  4. Oof. It's a nice, sweet, good-natured holiday. Everyone who observes it is not some serial abuser who packs any and all kindness into one day a year. If you don't want to celebrate it, don't. Let those who do, robustly or otherwise, go on about their business. Honestly, this place sometimes. 😂

  7. I just got Cole to finish most of his earlier dinner. He is doing ok. He is still lethargic acting, but he has had a few moments where he has had some burst of energy, and last night he did his kangaroo kicking on his catnip toy. I do know something is wrong that has not be identified, and he is having more test done on Monday. He's hanging in there.

  9. Valentines Day Kind Of Sucks A few thoughts: If this is the one time a year you buy your person flowers, you can do better. If this is the one time a year when you're extra thoughtful or nice to your person, you can do a lot better. Moreover, Valentine's Day is a manufactured, made-up, BS day. Supposedly signifying something many of us should be doing every day. Suddenly caring more about your person on the 14th day of February is like suddenly caring about the direction and path of your life on the 1st day of January. It's better than never caring. But not by much. These a

  13. You're welcome. This thread -- and the various countdowns I've done and commented on -- serve the same purpose for me. Not only do I need to pass the time when social options have been drastically curtailed, but I'm one of those people that needs to impose order in my head when there is so much chaos around. And it really helps to have people to vibe with when conventional interaction is out the window and you've lost people close to you.

  22. I’ve gone from Liberal to very Conservative and now I’m moving towards Moderate. Probably still classified as Conservative though not nearly as hard core as I used to be. Definitely ready for this cold civil war to be over, that’s for sure. It’s so bizarre that we live in probably the best time in human history - low poverty, low crime, good economy, low unemployment, no major wars in the world - yet everyone seems so damn angry. Makes me wonder if politics is not the problem but more a symptom of a deeper problem - maybe the movement toward secularism or the loneliness of technology? The

New Years to Valentine's Day: 220.0 to 212.0 I mentioned that I fell off the wagon a bit when helping my folks move Superbowl weekend, but I'm back on and got down to 212. When helping with the move, several family members said "Wow, you've lost weight!" which was a huge mental boost. The new goal is 210 by end of the month and then 200 my Easter. I think that's doable. Mpls will be coming out of the deep freeze in a day or three and I can start running outside again, which will be a big mental and physical boost. We're getting healthy

  40. 5. Volunteers -- Jefferson Airplane (from Volunteers) This was one of the year's anthems thanks to a rousing vocal from Marty Balin and hard-charging guitars from Jorma Kaukonen and Paul Kantner. It's all about the new generation taking over from the old one via revolution, in keeping with the spirit of the era's counterculture. It's probably my favorite Airplane song. The big statements of the lyrics belie the origin of the song. Balin was woken up one morning by a truck with "Volunteers of America" painted on the side. He liked the phrase so much that he started writing lyrics base

  43. I understand the sentiment that it's a stupid made up holiday but as long as it's around we might as well do what we can for the people who matter to us. Valentine's Day is a day when people feel down and you can make them feel better. Be nice to your significant others, but also reach out to friends and family who might get sad on the holiday. Your mom, your uncle whose wife passed a few years ago, your divorced sister, your single niece, they might all appreciate a quick happy Valentine's Day text or call. Especially with covid where a lot of people are already feeling lonely and depr
