  1. "It's genetic" and "It's a choice" aren't the only two possibilities. Another possibility is that sexual orientation is caused entirely or partially by environmental factors -- those aren't genetic, but that's still consistent with sexual orientation being involuntary. For example, suppose that exposure to lead tends to push people toward heterosexuality. (This is obviously just a hypothetical -- I'm not saying that lead exposure actually matters). Kids who grew up around lead paint and leaded gasoline might all grow up straight. They don't have a "straight gene," but they would all s

  2. I signed up for a 10K today for April 3 that apparently will happen despite COVID. Waves of only 50 runners so I'm not sure if there will be anybody running my pace or if I'll basically be running solo. It's sponsored by a high school track team so hopefully there will be some track/cross country kids in my wave. I guess this is my A race since I have no plans on any other races this spring. Goal is to average under 6:00 which would be a PR. I have a decent degree of confidence that I can do that. I won't adjust my training much other than making sure to run some fastish longer te

  5. Ya'll are some wonderful people ❤️ I feel what a lot of you are writing but from a different perspective. I struggled with "anger problems" growing up, even seeing a therapist/counselor at various times. It was never resolved but I was able to get a little better at controlling it. But that just meant suppressing those emotions which resulted in larger blow ups. This continued until very recently. My mom passed a few months ago and it wasn't until after that and trying to process those emotions that I discovered I have actually been living with depression most of my life. I guess wit

  7. 70. Van Halen “Unchained” (from Fair Warning) https://youtu.be/ojNrj-sWfpk Speaking of straight ahead, take no prisoners rock and roll, here’s a song that some critics place among Van Halen’s very best. I wouldn’t go that far. It does have a great opening guitar lick but it’s not, at least IMO, in the same category as “Dance the Night Away”, “Jump”, or any of the material from their tremendous debut album. But it’s still very very good.

  8. You have to tell the back story about this song. One of the smartest friends I knew in college was into country music and casually mentioned what the song was about once when we were out on a beer run. Waylon Jennings wore leather and his wife wore lace on stage. Stevie doesn't mention that in her story but adds more personal detail. Once you know the backstory that song means so much more each time you hear it. Nicks: "I wrote this song because Waylon Jennings called me up and asked me to write a song called 'Leather and Lace.' It was to be a duet for him and his wife (Jessi

  10. I would take Akers over Zeke as best player in the deal, and kind of easily. Saying that value was not on your side here even if you were dealing from position of strength and could afford to view JuJu as disposable. I'd have probably made the guy at least throw me back a decent second, then I think value would have been close.

  11. I love you all. We are starting the patient intake process for counseling next week for my youngest..she's almost 14. She has had trouble completing tasks most of her life and it is now coupled with what seems like depression and most certainly OCD behaviors. I have OCD and have medicated my entire adult life so I am sad its my hereditary fault but also happy that I can empathize and help more than my parents ever did. The heartbreaker is as of late she covers her ears when she's in the room with me, because I make some sound with my mouth she says (??). So yeah my angel can hardl

  15. 71. Billy Squire “My Kinda Lover” (from Don’t Say No) https://youtu.be/nI33SNkIsMw 1981 was the year that Billy Squire’s career took off, with one smash hit after another all from this album. He’s lived off its success ever since and why not? These are good rock songs, well-crafted, highly accessible. There’s no brilliance here, nothing innovative, but they’re solid. We will hear from Billy a few more times coming up.

  28. I also find Foreigner to be hit or miss, so to speak. Like a lot of classic rock bands of their time, they have some good songs but also a lot of substandard songs. Probably my favorite song of theirs is Starrider off the debut you mention, with Gramm and Mick Jones sharing vocals.

  31. Although cases are dropping, a lot of hospitals are still bursting at the seams - this website is a bit behind, but paints a decent picture how our healthcare infrastructure is faring. Vaccine coverage is also variable by region. Ideally, it would be nice if we approached the herd immunity threshold across the country (50-75% immune) before we really “open up”. Why not just the old folks? The more circulating virus, the greater potential for vaccine resistant mutants to emerge. And international travel will likely require some proof of vaccination or quarantine protocol for the foreseeabl

Stevie Nicks and Don Henley “Leather and Lace” (from Bella Donna) https://youtu.be/iLEMiDrdSKU So as it turns out Tom Petty wasn’t the only major rock star that Stevie collaborated with in 1981. There was also this gorgeous ballad that she wrote and put on her solo album with some help from one of the Eagles.

  37. Just got my second Pfizer dose this morning. I'm not frontline healthcare, >65, or any of the at risk groups but apparently they had a surplus of shots last month so they opened up a 3 day window to the "general public" for anyone that wanted one. Once you get the first, you've got priority to get the second. Both doses I drove up, waited about 10 minutes, got the shot, waited for 15 minutes for side effects, then drove out. Everything is administered by the National Guard here, medics/doctors in full uniform giving the shots.

  39. Aside from the awareness I hope this thread brought about, it also should show everyone that we aren't alone with this stuff. And it doesn't mean we aren't good parents when our kids are going through these issues. It's heartbreaking reading through some of these posts, but there's some comfort as well to see that we aren't failing them just because they go through this. I wanted to add another part that I think plays a part, even moreso for us as parents. We hear or read stories or see things on Facebook, or whatever it might be about kids that accomplish these amazing things. And I kno

  40. Yes, or the lead exposure could have occurred in the womb, so they were still literally born that way even if no genes were involved. I think the most obvious thing in the world is that people don't get to choose whom they're sexually attracted to. If they could, first, nobody would be a pedophile. Second, more folks would choose to be attracted to ugly people instead of beautiful people so that they'd face less competition. Or, rather, the very concepts of "ugly" and "beautiful" wouldn't make sense in the context of sexual attractiveness. That might well be a better world to live in, bu

The majority of the world has figured out how to wear one in public buildings without throwing a tantrum. It's not a nightmare. This whole time the folks fighting masks have also been the ones fighting lockdown... yet are the ones causing the country to need to stay locked down. That subset of the morons keeps ####ting their pants, making all of us wear diapers. Thankfully this should be behind us by April/may. I was vaccinated in early / mid February. Moder
