    The numbers were on the side of the hatch. He seemed pretty focused on opening the door. The hatch was the endgame for Locke, and he didn't have any reason to think those numbers on the side were anything more than a serial number. Would recognize the VIN of your car if you had to...

    When locke started talking to desmond in the hatch, Desmond asked "are you him"or something like that. Locke tried to bluff and pretend that he was. Desmond then asked the "riddle" as some sort of control code to ensure that Locke was the guy he was looking for. He wasn't.
