Yep, pmark is right on the mark here. Just make a normal drop of the player, in advance of the waiver run.
I do this if I know that I'm definitely dropping RB Z no matter what. (Usually it's in the case of a kicker or defense.)
To be fair, they did spend a lot of money on Jeff Faine and Carl Nicks during that time. Obviously neither of those signings really panned out the way they expected, and I agree with the overall point about needing to build the line with some draft picks.

It's tough with these running qbs, though. There was a play earlier in the game where they were gonna let Smith go out of bounds, and he cut it back up the field for a first down.

Same here. We've been doing it for 8 years or so and we like it a lot. 3 division winners, 2 wildcards using normal tie-breakers, and then last spot goes to the remaining team with the most points.
