Ahh that's too bad, at least it's getting closer :)
I view it as a tradeoff between keeping people engaged and increasing the odds of the best team winning. More teams means more people will be in it later, but you have a greater chance of a bad team getting hot at the right time and taking...
For me, it's all about the floor with that pick. Yes, you want to get the best player if possible, but your main goal should be to take the guy who will put up those high-end numbers with the least risk. I'd still go AP, but I have no qualms with Martin there.
I played around with this at the beginning of baseball season because the guy with the first pick was running late to the draft. You have to wait for the draft to start, but once it does, you can use as many pauses in a row as you need up to the max limit. The autodraft usually takes about 10...
The way I look at it, it's all about value. Keepers gives you the opportunity to get increased value out of certain picks and your goal is to maximize that. Obviously, one of the things you'll want to look at is where he's being drafted (or how much he costs in auction leagues) to get an idea...
I'd say your gripe is pretty legitimate. If the rules were in place before last season's draft, then you can't change things after the fact; managers would have already made a full season's worth of decisions based on that.
It'll be a little more work, but there's tons of tools you can use out...
We do it in one of my leagues and that's really the only downside I've found. It's not that big of a deal as long as the league isn't too big, you just need to be cognisant of it while you draft.
Oh, and expect someone to have a meltdown at some point when someone takes a 2nd top TE right...
