Next Goal Wins
Those that know me well know that I like dark, scary music. And while I enjoy a dark film as much as anyone, I never pass up the chance to see something sweet and wonderful. Watch this movie. DO IT NOW. It's free on Hulu, but pay the rental fee even if you don't have Hulu...
Love 'Round Midnight. Great documentation of some of the world's best musicians. As for Moonlight, I think the hype really killed the cool vibe of this movie. It's a slow burn, obviously, and when a movie gets this much praise, it can feel underwhelming watching what is, in fact, a beautiful film.
Upcoming shows:
Helmet & Cro-Mags
The Fillmore, San Francisco
Descendents, The Vandals, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, The Exploited, T.S.O.L., Adolescents, The Dickies, Dwarves
Cow Palace, San Francisco
I sure love True Grit. Probably the Coen's most underrated movie. Hollywood Shuffle hasn't aged well, but that movie was pretty daring and fresh when it came out back in 1987.
Recent watches and rewatches:
Killing of a Sacred Deer
**** this movie. A bummer from start to finish. I love The Lobster, but this filmmaker is a challenge to watch.
Kindergarten Cop
Genius. The kid actors are hilarious. The reason this movie works so well: in 96% of Arnold movies, he can...
All you dummies need to watch Dumb Money. It's the story of the GameStop stock controversy. Much like The Big Short, this movie relates a lot of complex information in a very fun, digestible manner. Two thumbs way up.
Any SF Bay Area music fans should check out Sleepytime Gorilla Museum in Berkeley on April 6th. Many of you haven't heard of them, but they're a weird, experimental group that is lauded by such big time bands as Gojira. Gonna be a trippy evening.
DJ Shadow
Regency Ballroom, San Francisco
Anyone that loved Shadow's essential album Endtroducing and was expecting that kind of sound would have been in for a shock for this show. Shadow has continued to grow as an artist, and I appreciate that he isn't just reproducing that sound over and...
