Thank you all for allowing me to join the list-making. I had a lot of fun seeing what everyone loved reading, and I've gone on a bit of a buying spree to add some of your beloved titles to my TBR list.
The book I'd recommend to everyone is The Horse by Willy Vlautin (he's also in the band...
To Kill A Mockingbird is my #1 book. I think it's the perfect American novel, beautifully written, so many good themes about its time period, and well-drawn characters. I've read it a few times and I'm always deeply impressed, and I forgive Harper Lee for not writing another novel. (I don't...
I am so glad to know that these books are reaching teens in the classroom--my own daughters got stuck with old duds (for people their age) like The Scarlett Letter. I do believe representation through reading is key to understanding each other as humans in the modern world. Thank you for doing...
I put Confederacy of Dunces at #21--I might have read it before I ever got spend time in New Orleans, a city I find as unique and captivating as this novel. I also want to say that this book is a good example for why people who have that tickling urge to write a novel should definitely write...
All of those books are such great reads--I like the combo of YA books (now in a golden age) and books that make teen readers stretch a bit more like the two memoirs.
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
I love this book. It's one of those stories that hits all the right notes with great characters and tight writing, a real gem. I also think it's interesting that the story never quite works when adapted into a film, and I like how that makes the book...
Moby **** by Herman Melville
I'm a sucker for a sea-faring story, and I've always loved whales, and for some reason whaling stories too?!? I did enjoy the book in high school even though I didn't quite get it. I read it again after reading Nathaniel Philbrick's nonfiction book In The Heart of...
I agree that high school students get stuck reading way too many books that they're not ready to read, and that makes people think that they hate reading.
Personally, I love seeing more recent books on this list because it shows that people are still engaged with reading. So many great novels have been written since we all were in high school. LOL.
All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
A fantastic WWII novel that shows very human characters from different perspectives of the war--German and French--with so many memorable scenes. The chapters are short and beautifully written and so impactful. It's one of the few novels that I will...
Lonesome Dove is one of those books that allows you to escape back in time. Such a great Western novel. I recently gave it to my 18-year-old nephew and he really loved it, too. You know it's good if it can compete with TikTok
