Middle-aged Dummies are back and bursting at the "themes" to get going! Full theme ahead!

Or I could go back to the pidgin french I used to pull out so that Germans and Belgians would think I was a chubby Parisian instead of a skinny American. But that was mainly because I could never remember how to say 'excuse me' in German.

My friend that's flying in tomorrow is "too old" to do 3 nights in a row. Poor decrepit man.

Greetings from London! Sorry to have gone MIA but the missus suggested that I head to the UK a few days earlier than planned for the annual weekend of Hold Steady shows. She sweetly thought that getting a few solo days away from work madness would get my mind off of things, but of course...

Was so excited to hear this! The Cruxshadows were huge in the mid-90s Florida goth/industrial scene - from Tallahassee (boooo!) but made there way through Gainesville a couple of times and played our little club. Their big hit at the time was Marilyn, My Bitterness, which even got spun up in...

You know who had heard of 7 Seconds, though? Craig Finn, of course. Cause most kids give me credit for being down with it When it was back in the day back when things were way different When the youth of today and the early 7 seconds Taught me some of life's most valuable lessons

I always had a soft spot for Twitch because it's the most classically "industrial" of the bunch. Can give or take With Sympathy on the whole but love Revenge. https://open.spotify.com/track/2IRdmtMgRc2o0g4q59T3dz?si=90711ef02d014974 And I think everyone's first time hearing Every Day Is...

Scarecrow definitely kicked off the brain-wipe. Then "I feel like my heart has been touched by christ" doubled-down.

Theme: 31 Songs from 31 Manchester(ish) Artists Song: Mountain Energy Band: The Fall From: Prestwich, Greater Manchester Tought to capture The Fall in a few sentences. From 1978 until Mark E. Smith's death in 2018, they released 37 studio albums, 11 EPs, and more than 40 live records. No...

Psalm 69 was in constant rotation for me in the summer of '92. There were way too many times that I would make the 45-minute drive home after a late-night restaurant shift and the first few songs of that CD would keep me wide awake. Then the back half would induce highway hypnosis and I'd...

Government employee thread! (Being a government employee is sweet)

Literal words included in an email from my agency about what to write if we choose to respond: "Assume that what you write will be read by malign foreign actors..."

Theme: 31 Songs from 31 Manchester(ish) Artists Song: Second Skin Band: The Chameleons From: Middleton, Greater Manchester The Chameleons' debut album Script of the Bridge from 1983 is 60 minutes of post-punk perfection. Criminally underrated band that influenced groups as diverse as...

I blame J. Mascis and his giant wall of amps for ruining my ears. Reality is that I should have learned to bring earplugs after the first time seeing him.

Government employee thread! (Being a government employee is sweet)

OPM is not my employer. They are a government personnel agency. If my actual employer, meaning my Department's leadership (leadership that was appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate) asks me to respond, I will - even if I think it's a wrong-headed exercise. If they tell me not...

Theme: 31 Songs from 31 Manchester(ish) Artists Song: Commercial Rain Band: Inspiral Carpets From: Oldham, Greater Manchester I'm completely lacking any motivation at the moment (thanks DOGE) so I'm just gonna copy what I wrote about Commercial Rain in my 1990 thread: Our kid JML came through...

I've definitely mentioned this before, but I saw the Killers right after the release of Hot Fuss opening for Stellastarr* at the Khyber in Philly. Maybe 15 people were around for the opener - all of us there for Stellastarr* - and Brandon Flowers acted like he was performing for a stadium full...
