  1. Thanks for bumping this thread - I just finished a trip from Atlanta->Black Hills/Rapid City->Yellowstone->Grand Teton, and it was amazing as well. Anyone who thinks we need less national parks/protected public lands hasn't spent any time in them. This was an epic 3 week trip in our household - we left Atlanta on a Friday afternoon and drove the 8 hours to St. Louis. Overnighted there and it was another 12 up to Interior, South Dakota (one of the Badlands NP gateway towns). Got in late Saturday night but were at the Badlands first thing Sunday. Spent Sunday at the Badlands/Wall/Minuteman missile site, then headed over to Rapid City which was our home base for 5 nights. From Rapid City we did Custer State Park, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, the Needles Hwy, Spearfish Canyon, and Deadwood. Leaving Rapid City we tried to get into Devil's Tower (line was too long to get in) and then headed over the Bighorns to Cody. A couple nights in Cody for the Buffalo Bill Museum and the Cody rodeo. After leaving Cody, we drove up the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway and Beartooth Hwy to Big TImber, where we were at a dude ranch for a week (this was the wife's 40th birthday present). Leaving the dude ranch a week later, we camped a couple nights in Yellowstone (Mammoth and Slough Creek campgrounds), spent 2 nights in West Yellowstone, then headed down to Grand Teton. Hit all the highlights in Yellowstone - Grand Prismatic via Fairy Falls, Old Faithful, Lamar Valley, Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, etc, but our favorite park of the trip was Grand Teton. Mormon Row was awesome, and the hike around Jenny Lake was pretty fantastic. Then there was the 24 hour drive home Strongest recommendation of the trip - the Gypsy app. If you've not heard of it, it's an app for your phone that utilizes your GPS (no data connection required) and is essentially like an in-car tour guide. There is one available for the Black Hills, and a separate one available for Yellowstone/GTNP. This is the best $10 you'll spend on your trip. It tells you stories, gives you facts about landmarks you're about to see/have seen, and recommends hikes and other points of interest. Highly recommend.

  3. I'm going to be headed to St. George also, pending COVID. If the race is on and flying is OK, I'll be there racing (it's a bit of a drive from Atlanta). We should grab a beer before the race.

  6. I 100% agree on DeSoto. I've done 14 fulls and every one has been in the Rivieras. I wouldn't race anything past an hour on the bike without them. You want to spend your $$ on your bike touch points - shoes/socks and shorts/tri suits. Comfort on a long day is priceless.
  7. I'd agree with JAA - starting to work up to an IM is at least a 2 year enterprise. I'd probably even lean towards 3 depending on your background. I'd have an A race be an Olympic first year, half IM second, and full the 3rd. A full is going to be way, way more than twice as hard as your half.
  8. YMMV but I like to drill holes in the soles of my running shoes to let them drain. Between the treads of course - makes no difference in how the shoes feel but I find it makes an appreciable difference in how much they squish with sweat.

  10. Your 2nd day at the GC I would take either Kaibab or Bright Angel down into the Canyon a mile or two. A little effort will get you away from 90% of the crowds. 2nd day at Zion I'd do Angel's Landing. Also if you have some time I'd head over to the Kolob Canyons area of the park. It's virtually deserted and Kolob Canyons viewpoint is great. At Arches Delicate is a 2-3 hour hike, so about half a day. It is very exposed so if it's a hot day bring plenty of water. The Double Arch area has 2-3 easy hikes from basically the same parking lot, it's a nice easy way to see a good number of Arches.
  11. Mine did too (one firestick and one fire tv). A router reboot solved the problem.
  12. My office is right around the corner from there. I live in East Cobb and my commute is 20-25 min (8ish miles). Not bad at all, on average, for Atlanta. Bonus is that East Cobb schools are great, no need to pay for private school.
  13. You're going to need to call them, but I think I remember an announcement that they would waive cancellation fees for the room(s) and any dining plan.
  14. Tickets are good forever. You just have to pay the differential between current price and what you paid if there is a difference.
  15. Strangely, I seem to have cramping during my afternoon/evening swim sessions as well. When I swim in the mornings I've never had an issue, but in the afternoons I'll relatively routinely cramp. I don't know if it's electrolyte imbalance, my diet, or what but the above sounds exactly like me.
  16. Need some advice - due to the coronavirus the wifey cancelled our Spring Break trip to Tokyo and instead we're going to pivot and head out west to Yosemite in April. Flying in and out of SanFran, want to hit Yosemite/King's Canyon/Sequoia (maybe Pinnacles). I've got 7 days to play with. 1 - What sort of time allocation do you recommend between those parks? 2 - Where would you stay? One place and make day trips? Split it up into two or three hotels? 3 - What are the "must-do" hikes? Family of 5 with 3 kids under 10. I'm sure I'll be carrying the 5 year old a bit.
  17. Every aid station in the US does for sure. I'm not sure about Europe - occasionally they have funky rules about what's supplied at each aid station. I'd check the Athlete Guide on the IM website for the 2019 race. 95% odds the aid station setup will be the same.
  18. Plenty of people do this - it's not wrong. It's just not my preference. I'd much rather not have to carry my own nutrition, not have to deal with a backup plan, logistics, plus weight on a bike. I'd just rather live off the course and grab at each aid station. What tends to work for me at an aid station: Start the bike with one bottle of water in my aerobars, and one gel. As you approach the 15 mile-ish aid station on the bike, consume the gel. At the front of the aid station will be water and Powerade/Gatorade. Grab a water and put in bottle cages. The middle of the aid station will be food items - gels, bananas, bars. Grab a couple of these and toss in bento box. The end of the aid station will be more water/Gatorade, grab a Gatorade and put in bottle cages. I'm then stocked to aid station 2. At the beginning of aid station 2 use the spare water to fill up the aerobar bottle, toss the empty at the front of the aid station. Replace with a new water. Rinse and repeat at every aid station, with food as I want it and Gatorade as I run out. Easy peasy and doesn't require custom mixes, specific brands, etc. Just whatever they have.
  19. 1 - Bike, bike, and more bike. This is a swim warmup and run cooldown to a bike race. 2 - Practice running on tired legs. Your base long workouts should be a 80 to 100 mile bike with a 4-6 mile run afterwards. The next day should be a 20-30 mile bike warmup and a long run, ramping up to 16-18 miles. I don't think I ran over 18 on any training cycle I've done and felt very successful. 3 - Practice your nutrition - Know what they'll have on course and make sure you are comfortable with using that. I wouldn't bring my own nutrition on a IM course as it's like a buffet. They'll have anything and everything you could want but make sure your stomach is good with their brand of offerings. I'm not sure what's on course this year but the IM website will know. 4 - Nice has a reputation for heat, make sure you get heat acclimated. Any specific race related questions that I can help with I'm happy to.
  20. The North rim wont be open in March I dont believe. Also Bryce will likely be covered in snow.
