  1. The Dunk & Egg stories are a ton of fun, IMO. They also color the "current" story in several ways I won't mention. I think the first 3 are coming out in their own volume this fall. Might want to wait until then. Previously, they were scattered across different anthologies. The two "Dance Of Dragons" stories recently released are, as far as I know, only available in anthologies as well. They're set well before the Dunk & Egg stuff. They're ok, but they feel abbreviated to me (like Martin's holding something back). You can get the gist of those two stories in The World Of Ice & Fire, along with the rest of the known history of Westeros (& some across the pond). That's a fairly expensive book in paper form, though - and I wouldn't waste the money for an e-book version of it. I think the artwork makes it worth the price if you're into Martin's world. But there's a #### load of backstory, too, including some that run right up to Robert's Rebellion. I read all the D&E stories and know the theory of how they may/may not affect the current story. I also bought all those anthologies you referred to as well as TWOIF (all as ebooks).I really liked the back story, although keeping all the participants in the various battles of the different sides of the Targaryen family straight was difficult. But some of the stuff about how difficult it was to become a dragon rider fits very neatly into the present story.
  2. Back in the olden days, all books were written and published in serial form. Of course it was only a week between chapters, not 5 years, but the point is the same...
  3. Have you guys read the Dunc and Egg short stories and the various other "histories" (authorized or otherwise) of Westros and the Seven Kingdoms?
  4. I'm not totally ready to throw in the towel. They need to finish this road trip at least 4-3 I think and hopefully get home with the deficit no greater than 4 games if the Pirates and Orioles provide a little more resistance for the Mets than the Rockies have. The good news is that I think they can do it. Rotation finally looks like it we hoped it would, and the two guys I have the most faith in- Scherzer and Strasburg- will start four of the last seven games on this trip. The offense looked to be coming around a bit before the Kershaw/Greinke buzzsaw and Harper's knee injury (he was clearly still hurt yesterday, missed three center cut fastballs in one AB at one point). Now if they come home 5 or 6 back next weekend it might be time to turn our attention to the Redskins. I'm sure that will go well. So unless I'm wrong, they are now 1-3 on this roadtrip out west, they've scored 1 run in 27 innings and find themselves 4.5 games back of Los Metropolitans. They are 2 games over .500 and are 7.5 out in in the NL wildcard. Zimmermann and Strasburg have just lost back-to-back. The "we've had injuries to key players" argument is about played out since everyone except Span is back from the DL. Oh, yeah, and Storen is now essentially useless after being "demoted" to an 8th inning guy, and the big time closer sits in the bullpen because they can't get any leads to protect. Bryce, if you want a ring, you'd better "went to Jared"... You know I'm not Bryce Harper, right? I'm not even on the team. I'm sorry you're disappointed. Unfortunately I'm not really in a position to do anything about it. Sorry! Actually, I'm not that disappointed. I'm an O's fan and we have our own issues to worry about.
  5. Yeah, they need to go like 8-2 on this homestand to stay in touch with the playoffs. And I don't see that happening.

  7. I agree that I'd try to resign Davis over Wieters. I think Caleb Joseph is a decent enough catcher to not go all out to keep Wieters. Chen is going to go too, and I'd guess O'Day will get some big FA offers. Could he close somewhere? Should they make a try at signing Fister when he walks from the Nats?
  8. Well, he will get to play on the weekend... To finish his 2nd round that is...
  9. He backed up his "lucky" 64 with a nice little 66 to stand at 14 under. Maybe it all falls apart on the weekend, but... he didn't hit any into the trees today that cost himyesterday 3 times he was dead right but still had shots. not saying he isn't playing well, he's playing amazing I didn't see a shot of his round today, so I was only going from the score.

  11. I think that posting that chapter broke the interwebs. I've been trying to access the chapter without any luck for about 15 minutes.
  12. It is 75 degrees in DC right now. Big cold front is due between 6-10 pm and it won't get out of the 40s tomorrow and low 40s Saturday.
  13. The "Old Man of the River" seemed pretty cool, for a giant turtle, that is...
  14. Griff has to get greyscale from saving Tyrion at the Bridge of Something...
