  1. Its not great Bob. The defense had 1 sack, 0 takeaways, gave up 2 TDs over 50 yards, and the Rams had to punt 1 time. Thats it. Everything that happened in the other phases of the game are beside the point. Bears invested most of their marbles on the defense and the defense is AT BEST average. That means AT BEST your team is average. And this isnt one game, this is basically what we've been seeing for the last season plus. Its time to recognize that this is officially a rebuild. Whatever aspirations there were to ride an elite defense with a just good enough offense and some good luck... thats just not realistic.
  2. My buckets are: -Kelce/Waller -Kittle/Andrews - Whoever is left in the 10th round
  3. I dont think they intended him to play more than one series.
  4. I mean, its backups against backups, so Fields should look good. But his decision making is what is impressing me. No red flags on bad habits, aside from a little ball security.
  5. I LOVE that drive for Fields. Scrambles with his eyes up field and makes the pass when the defense breaks down. Scrambles, nothing is there, runs for a couple yards rather than force it. Scrambles, sees the lane to the endzone, takes it to the house. That is exactly what you want out of an athletic QB. Thats what can make you great for a long time in this league, rather than a flash in the pan running QB.
  6. 2nd quarter, 1st preason thoughts: -Fields looks like rookie. Slow lining up and getting the ball snapped. Thats why they didn't anoint him starter. Give him time to learn the little details. - There hasnt been a Bears QB in decades that has this kind of arm. - I didn't know Jessie James was on the team. Thats a really nice pickup at a critical position in this offense with suspect depth. Injuries could bring him into the FF conversation. - Duke Shelly continues to be an improvement over Buster Skrine at nickle. - Vanilla defense looks vanilla, but fine. Far more interested to see what the more aggressive blitz schemes look like with new DC. - I dont need to see any more Javon Wims in my lifetime. I'll be 90 and he will still be on the roster.
  7. 1st quarter, 1st pregame thoughts: -Montgomery banged up on first carry. D Williams looks fast and hungry. Hmm. - Dalton made bad throws into good coverage twice on 3rd down. My shocked face. - Bears are bring careful not to ask too much of the Oline. Not much choice. - Surprisingly heard Robert Quinns name called several times. Unsurprisingly, none of it was because of anything he did on the football field.
  8. Rumor is Pace was talking to Denver about the 9 spot but turned down a trade that was the 20th, a second, third, and next years first. That was the kind of Pace overpayment that was scary. Turning it down and still landing Fields makes me feel better about Pace. Seems like he's learned his lessons- although maybe McCaskey/Phillips nixed it.
  9. Im happier with this as i think about it. Expensive but if it works its cheap. Done deal, sunk money, this guy looks like a winner.
  10. If hes a franchise QB, sure. If not, sets the franchise back another two years. So...
  11. Screw Pace.. this was the scenario where a QB drops and they STILL manage to overpay. Not surprising. Just disappointing.
  12. This is the crux of it. I think its extra first round picks to move up and get any of these guys because of the multiple bidders. If any of them fall to 15 or so, maybe something more reasonable could be done. That being said, i dont buy there are 5 elite QB prospects in this draft. I think its a relic of league need and covid screwing up college season and the combine. Whoever the Bears have a crack at, if anyone, would probably have been a rated second rounder any other year. If somebody falls to 20, fine. If they try to move up... well thats so Ryan Pace I cant even deal with it.
  13. My problem is this whole thing is starting to feel like Pace is waiting to see who falls enough for him to move up and claim this was the guy they wanted all along. Moving up is going to be expensive this year, and I hate the idea that (whatever they will claim) they just want one of the top 5 so they can say they got him. Theyll retcon their decision making process later to claim THIS guy was the one and only choice all along, but in reality it doesn't matter.
  14. Bears could have gotten Teddy B for 3 million this year and a 6th round pick... 🤬
  15. Id rather see them trade down than trade up, unless it was only a couple slots and didnt involve an additional 1st. There is one native first round pick on this team, two if you count Mack. You cant keep trading away future starters to plug holes.
  16. The problem is, in that scenario you can throw the book out the window. You might have 8 teams trying to move up and throwing picks at Carolina like candy. To go from 20 to 8 in this draft is going to be Two 1st, just to start with. Because you've got 5 QBs that are perceived as franchises (which is ridiculous but apparently believed) and that means you have 3-4 players falling out of the top 10 at other positions that are blue chip talent. If the Bears could move up to 8 for a 2nd and a 3rd I would do it right now, today, in a heartbeat- not to draft a QB, but to draft an ELITE tackle or WR.
  17. Kiper's a moron. He loves being the contrarian and thats why he has his job. Maybe this unprecedented QB run is a smokescreen but I dont think so. If nothing else these things tend to take on lives of their own- team start trading up because they believe they have to. Which btw sounds like a very Pace thing to do.
  18. For me, this is the best draft the Bears could hope for. If they go OT, QB, CB, Im happy. Is Mond a second round pick? In this draft, I suppose he is. I like the quick release, for me thats a 'must have' in the current NFL. I'd MUCH rather overpay in the 2nd than trade up in the first for a boatload of picks on a prospect that may not pan out either. Mond makes a lot of sense, he's sort of the aniti-Mitch Trubiski. Everything he is is on tape, you know what youre getting and just have to decide if you can develop him from there. That being said, if there is some great value at another position of need (which is practically all of them) that slips into the 2nd with all the QB madness, I have no problem with that either and see what kind of QB project is available later. The bottom line is this team cant be fixed in this draft, but Pace can plug some gaping holes (which he has created). If they get the O-line strengthed and then go seriously shopping for a QB next year, I think they can be a serious contender again much sooner than you would think.
  19. You might be right, but if so this draft is off the charts unprecedented. Like, statistically almost impossible.
  20. I absolutely think this years QB crop in the draft is showing signs of a classic bubble. I did the same analysis just using first round picks in the last decade and it looks like about a coinflip as to whether you end up with a viable longterm starter (granted jury is still out on several of them). Not an elite starter, mind you, just a guy that can viably start. I think what happened is a long draught of young QBs that looked like potential successors to the Brady/Brees/Rodgers hierarchy. There was a ton of talk about how replacements werent developing for those HOFers as they aged. Then we had the Mahomes-Watson revelation and teams got fired up to get one of those caliber guys. Now they are overpaying for a lottery ticket. Which is not entirely irrationality given how profoundly a guy like that can change your franchise. That being said it seems to me the odds of the 5th or 6th QB in a draft class being a franchise QB are long. Those were 2nd round picks even two or three years ago, to burn a top 15 seems crazy to me. The trade value of that draft pick is like an additional (late) first round pick plus. IE- at least another starting caliber player. So are you willing to sacrifice two starters for a coin flip at QB? Too rich for my blood.
