🏛️ Official Supreme Court nomination thread - Amy Coney Barrett (5 Viewers)

So all those Republicans waiting for multiple accusers, you’re all on board now to jettison this nomination, right?

Actually i think some might view it in a positive light.  I think for some conservatives, it gets filed in the same category as saying the n word and so on. Its one of things people got to do back when american was great, but cant now due to how pc we are.
The global characterizations are over the top and ridiculous.  "We could easily spend an evening discussing Bill and JFK - two known predators.  Oh, and Byrd, your friendly next door KKK Senator.  You know, when things were great for Democrats way back when."  See - pretty easy to do.  The whole line of discussion is silly and non-productive.

If it’s true they’ll hurry up the vote. They’ll still put Kavanaugh on the bench.
Yup if Thursday’s testimony is still being negotiated, I anticipate them to deny what she requests, say she was unwilling and move for an immediate vote.

https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/senate-democrats-investigate-a-new-allegation-of-sexual-misconduct-from-the-supreme-court-nominee-brett-kavanaughs-college-years-deborah-ramirez

Kavanaugh has issued a statement saying it's not true. White House says it's not corroborated. Senate Republicans have known about this since last week, refused to investigate, and tried to hurry up the confirmation.
It's somewhat though not certainly corroborated:

A classmate of Ramirez’s, who declined to be identified because of the partisan battle over Kavanaugh’s nomination, said that another student told him about the incident either on the night of the party or in the next day or two. The classmate said that he is “one-hundred-per-cent sure” that he was told at the time that Kavanaugh was the student who exposed himself to Ramirez. He independently recalled many of the same details offered by Ramirez, including that a male student had encouraged Kavanaugh as he exposed himself. The classmate, like Ramirez, recalled that the party took place in a common room on the first floor in Entryway B of Lawrance Hall, during their freshman year. “I’ve known this all along,” he said. “It’s been on my mind all these years when his name came up. It was a big deal.” The story stayed with him, he said, because it was disturbing and seemed outside the bounds of typically acceptable behavior, even during heavy drinking at parties on campus. The classmate said that he had been shocked, but not necessarily surprised, because the social group to which Kavanaugh belonged often drank to excess. He recalled Kavanaugh as “relatively shy” until he drank, at which point he said that Kavanaugh could become “aggressive and even belligerent.”

Another classmate, Richard Oh, an emergency-room doctor in California, recalled overhearing, soon after the party, a female student tearfully recounting to another student an incident at a party involving a gag with a fake penis, followed by a male student exposing himself. Oh is not certain of the identity of the female student. Ramirez told her mother and sister about an upsetting incident at the time, but did not describe the details to either due to her embarrassment.
Seems like the "classmate" corroborated to a third party but hasn't wanted to speak publicly yet.

While I don't think that second item, even if true, is anything close to a pattern of sexual violence, the optics are probably bad enough now they should drop him before this upcoming testimony and move on to Barrett.

Agree.  Reserving judgment on this, but my initial reaction is not to believe it.  I hope it doesn't overshadow looking into what is to me the more credible new allegation in the New Yorker.
I thought the New Yorker article referenced behavior similar to what Avenatti is alleging, in the section beyond Ramirez’s story.

I do agree Ramirez’s allegation is credible and should be investigated.  Seems like it shouldn’t be too difficult for an organization like the FBI to track down the residents of an undergraduate dorm at Yale from the early 1980s.

You don’t think jamming your penis in someone’s face is sexual violence, or you don’t think twice is a pattern?

Right now hundreds of former male former Yale students are being sent a draft letter asking them to sign it, saying

"I was at that party, and I was the penis-waving guy while she was drunk on the floor. Ask Brett."

Everything that happens once can never happen again. But everything that happens twice will surely happen a third time.

To be fair, there are at least 65 women Kavanaugh didn’t sexually assault.

From twitter (@peterbakernyt) -

Kavanaugh has calendars from summer 1982 that he plans to give the Senate that don't show a party that matches Blasey Ford's description, according to someone working for his confirmation. Calendars can't prove it didn't happen but his team will argue there is no corroboration.

The calendars show he was out of town much of the summer at the beach or with his parents and they detail basketball games, movie outings, football workouts and so forth. A few parties are mentioned but include names of people other than those identified by Blasey Ford.

This seems very strange. Kavanaugh has 36 year old calendars detailing summertime leisure activities? I guess we will find out but that strikes me as extremely odd.

She'll slowplay it until at least Wednesday night. Lots more stories come out between now and then.

Guys, relax.  Don’t worry.  Even if he gets jettisoned here, he’s still an appellate court judge who gets to make a lot of decisions about women’s bodies.

She'll slowplay it until at least Wednesday night. Lots more stories come out between now and then.
And that, as I’ve said all along, is why the lawyer wanted to push the testimony as far as possible.  To let other stories come out.

The reason they didn’t go with Barrett in the first place, IMO, is that Collins and Murkowski would never vote for her. What’s changed?

There's almost no way he survives this.  He's out by Tuesday, COB at the latest IMO.  Even if you think the odds are 95% none of this stuff is true, why would you risk it?  What if someone can prove it?

Republicans don't care about Brett Kavanaugh.  They care about the seat.
