Not thrilled about the pick, but it could be worse. I think the initial plan was possibly Aaron Donald/Kyle Fuller but then they both went right infront of them. I was expecting Dennard after that or a trade down and they end up taking Shazier... Not thrilled. I think it was maybe 5-10 picks too early for him and it isn't like the Steelers to reach a little.

Oh well, nothing to do but welcome him to Steeler Nation now.

Dallas Cowboys were ready to select Ryan Shazier at No. 16 until #Steelers grabbed him. Agent was on phone w Cowboys.
Second time this was posted.

Is sniping the player that Jerruh Jones wanted supposed to make me feel better about the pick?
I'd think getting the fastest, most athletic linebacker in the draft, at a position of need, and a guy who in hindsight seems as if any number of war rooms were zeroed in on taking ASAP ought to make you feel better about it.

The only reason to be down on him, IMO, is the idea that the Mel Kiper-ish talking heads didn't appear to be quite as high on him as the war roomers whose jobs actually depend on their being right.

If PIT seemed to be alone on an island (like Philly with M. Smith) in this valuation, I can see wondering WTH happened. But when all the player personnel guys seem to be in harmony, I'm more inclined to think the talking heads just led us astray and/or didn't know what they were talking about.

And I posted it the first time. Assuming Z missed it. It wasn't just the Cowboys gunning for him.

Rumor has it ATL was trying to move up to get him. Considering their first round success under Dimitroff and thier shift to a 3-4 seems like Shazier was highly thought of by more than just us and Dallas.

I like that they now have a perfectly normal amount of hair up the middle of the defense when you average it all out.

from Pat Kirwan...

Two players of the players who stopped by had an edge about them that reminded me of enforcer types. Calvin Pryor, the new Jets safety, and Ryan Shazier of the Steelers had a look in their eye like "get ready NFL, I'm going to do some damage."

I would also like to point out that Shazier's alopecia is the perfect counter to Polamalu's flowing locks. Defense, like life, is about balance.

I wouldn't wish an affliction on anyone (especially as a kid) but I'm kind of jealous that he doesn't have to shave his head everyday like I do.

Before the draft Jon Ritchie said he's a mongoose.

Searching for some post round 1 second round mocks and of the 3 I found all had Tuitt available at the Steelers pick. One of them had them taking Antone Exum who I like but not in the 2nd. Probably better at the next level as a safety rather than corner.

My Wish List:

DE:

Ra'Shede Hageman

Kony Ealy

Stephon Tuitt

NT:

Louis Nix III

CB:

Pierre Desir (for 3rd rd pick)

WR:

Allen Robinson

Marqise Lee

Jordan Matthews

Martavis Bryant

I had them taking Tuitt in my predictions yesterday. I think he would be a real nice pick up. The movement to get younger and quicker copntinues on the D-line.

As an ND alum, I like both Nix and Tuitt, but I think Nix helps us more. McClendon is out of position at NT. Slide Nix inside and and McClendon out. Nix's size will help our ILBs

IB, when will you learn...with the first pick in the 2nd round. Louis Nix III, Notre Dame

I'm praying Houston takes a QB. If they don't take Nix, the odds that he falls to us shoot up (barring someone trading up for him.) Look at the teams that pick between Houston and Pittsburgh and count the 3-4 teams looking at a 2-gap NT.

Exactly.

Adams continues to be the most underrated WR in this draft. How is he not on the list?

Good point. I probably just blew it for us.

Will be even worse if he makes it to the Steelers pick and they pass on him.

Not to me. That would tell me that they really don't like him much and don't think he's a good fit. I'd prefer that to not getting a chance to draft him and always wondering what might have been.

Exactly what I was going to say. Only WR I want them taking in 2 are Robinson or Davante. (Maybe Lee. MAYBE.)

If both are gone, I hope they go D.

Also, if nothing else, get excited about the potential similarities to Chad Brown from way back when. Same size coming out of college, and ran like a 4.45 or something at his pro day. Transitioned to 3-4 ILB pretty well.

Not to me as well. I was talking about those who REALLY want Nix to be the next pick. I would not be shocked at all if they pass.

Should have a lot of talent available when our pick comes up. I understand when there isn't a trade down to make you have to take your guy in case he isn't there the next round but seems like a couple luxury picks by bad teams.

Would have preferred Nix from a positional need standpoint, but as I said, Tuitt is a stud. He came into school last year overweight which probably accounts for his drop, but I think we got a steal here.

Now...to focus on the CB and WR positions please.

Tuitt pick didn't go over well on The Audible - in a nutshell, decent player with limited upside.

I think he's got a pretty decent upside. He had an off final year and I don't think it was representative of his ability.

Audible, schmaudible.

Thoughts on Timmy Jernigan playing NT for us? Could he be a rd2 consideration?
i really wanted Jernigan there. and to see him go to the Ravens doubles-down the anxiety. so far i am not so high on this draft but i am willing to give them a couple years to see how it works out.

I like the Tuitt pick, if conceivably him, Jarvis, and Shazier live up to expectations that makes a nasty front 7 - which in hand helps out our weak CBs.

Still worried/surprised we went 2 rounds without a CB or WR, basically 3 rounds in reality since our 3 is a comp pick.

####. Was hoping we could get Allen Robinson with our 3rd pick. He was really underrated I think, I guess because he's not a speed WR and isnt huge.

"Boy does this pick make a lot of sense for Pittsburgh. Remember Brett Keisel, who has played that position for the Steelers at a high level but will probably retire. Tuitt has first-round talent. He can play inside or outside. When healthy he's explosive. I've had an opportunity to watch this kid play at Notre Dame for the last three years. He can stack and shed to make a tackle. Occasionally he can get stuck on blocks if he's tired."

-- Mike Mayock

Not sure why the excessive want for WR. They're doing what most teams are doing. Sitting until one WR matches up on the board with the pick. Lots of WR talent still on the board.

The only NT's I thought worth the Steelers pick there were Nix or Hageman. Jernigan isn't big enough IMO to make a difference over McClendon. Hegeman was gone by our pick and there must be some reason Nix is dropping. Happy with the Tuitt pick.

Well, at least for me, its because our current WRs are Brown, Lance Moore, Wheaton, DHB..Im actually optimistic on the DHB signing, but were bereft at WR, its so bad I dont know what to say. When you dont have an idea who your WR2 is this time of year, thats bad.
