For some reason I actually read the story - they weren't even in a kayak. The 10 year old son was cleaning his boots or something in the water, and got sucked in by the current. The 14 year old (who was not a son and is not mentioned in the title) went in to get him, and he got sucked away in the current too. Finally the father (of the 10 year old) jumped in to try and save them both, and he got sucked away in the current too. They all drowned.

What an odd, horrible, tragic, random, stupid, awful way to die.

Similar thing happened here on fathers day. Current swept away daughter and niece. The father couldn't swim, but still tried to save them. Fishermen saved the kids, but the father never resurfaced.
