14/15 Inter-Class Rookie Rankings (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
Another conversation sparked this exercise--thought it would be interesting to see how others would break it down. 2015 prospects are valued as of today. 2014 prospects are valued as of their draft.

Based on this, I think 2015 is a big step above the 2014 class, around this time last year.

1. Gurley

2. Gordon

Gurley/Gordon are the clear top 2. They are in top 5 dynasty RB conversation--a lot more value than Sammy/Evans looked to offer.

3. Sammy Watkins

4. Mike Evans

High level WR prospects worthy of top 3-4 picks most years.

5. Amari Cooper

Step below Watkins/Evans; step above White/Parker/Cooks Could slip to below tier; unlikely to join above.

6. Kevin White

7. DeVante Parker

8. Brandin Cooks

White/Parker's prototypical size just beat out Cook's plus situation.

9. Eric Ebron

Ebron was a special prospect at TE and was drafted accordingly (NFL and FF).

10. Jay Ajayi

11. Tevin Coleman

12. Jeremy Hill

Very hard for me to break these 3 up. Ajayi/Coleman could both jump Hill by a tier depending on situation; Hill's was a negative at the time.

13. Odell Bekcham Jr.

The NFL liked him more than we did. Seemed to provide a high floor/only solid ceiling at the time.

14. Bishop Sankey

15. Duke Johnson

16. Carlos Hyde

Next tier of RBs. Was worried about Hyde's age following a likely (fantasy) redshirt. Wasn't high on Sankey, but his draft slot/situation was appealing.

17. Dorial Green-Beckham

18. Jaelen Strong

19. Marqise Lee

Was higher than most on Lee at the time, as I am with Strong now. DGB has too much upside to keep slipping.

20. Ameer Abdullah

Likely would have gone Abdullah over the huge WR tier below.

21-25

Benjamin/Funchess/Adams/Matthews/Coates

No point in breaking these up--all right there. I'm assuming Coates goes late 1st after a stupid combine. Otherwise, he'll drop. Liked Matthews/Adams' situations.

26. Austin Stud-Jenkins

27. Tre Mason

Big ASJ fan but he's a TE. Mason looked like a solid back. Liked him enough; situation was a question mark.

28-31

Robinson/Latimer/Smith/Perriman

Another jumble of WRs I don't want to break up. Not especially high on Smith, but there is a lot of 1st round buzz. Hard to drop him lower than this if it proves accurate.

32. Maxx Williams

33. Clive Walford

Like these two more than Amaro.

34. T.J. Yeldon

35. Mike Davis

I think both back have upside, though they didn't live up to past expectations.

Yours?

Edit: Swapped Mariota/Amaro for Yeldon/Davis.

Did I miss Devonte Freeman, or is he 35+? I think he was valued around or above Jeremy Hill last year, no?
He didn't make the cut for me. I personally never liked him near Hill.

He would likely go above some of the non-RBs listed within his own class. But the 2015 backs push him way down. There are a few more RBs that would make the cut before him, depending on where they get drafted--Buck, CA-P, Yeldon, Davis, etc.

I can't see Watkins not being in that first tier. He was pretty heavily hyped last year.
I think Sammy could be on a tier of his own at 1.03--and perhaps he should be--but he's closer to Evans than Gordon/Gurley, IMO. In a vacuum, I think you have a very strong argument. But considering positional value--I think the RBs are the obvious choices.

I do not feel nearly as far along on my research for 2015 as I was at this time last year. There are still I lot of players I need to watch. Most of the players from 2015 I do have ranked are players I have been keeping tabs on for over a year now.

But here is my attempt to match what I know about the 2015 draft class with my 2014 list at around this time of year. I bolded the 2015 players. I consider all players in a tier to be pretty close in value as prospects.

Overall I consider the 2014 class to be better than 2015 but it is close. The RB prospects are much better than 2014 and the WR at the top I think are comparable prospects, there just are not as many of them.

Both draft classes look much better than the 2013 draft class which had some RB land in good situations but didn't offer as high of quality prospects at WR as either of these draft classes.

Great topic.

So do to a recent discussion about this I decided to grab Lance Zierleins draft grades from NFL.com and sort all of the rookie prospects by his draft grades.

This is what the grades mean-

9.00-10 Once-in-lifetime player

8.00-8.99 Perennial All-Pro
7.50-7.99 Future All-Pro
7.00-7.49 Pro Bowl-caliber player
6.50-6.99 Chance to become Pro Bowl-caliber player
6.00-6.49 Should become instant starter
5.50-5.99 Chance to become NFL starter
5.20-5.49 NFL backup or special teams potential
5.01-5.19 Better-than-average chance to make NFL roster
5.00 50-50 Chance to make NFL roster
4.75-4.99 Should be in an NFL training camp
4.50-4.74 Chance to be in an NFL training camp
NO GRADE Likely needs time in developmental league.

2015 grades
2014 grades
2013 grades

I didn't include 2013 grades because he used a differeent numerical method for those than 2014-2015 making them incomparable.

This is how he graded the 2013 prospects-

96-100 Future Hall of Famer Top Pick A once-in-a-generation type prospect who could change how his position is played

85-95 Immediate Starter 1st An impact player with the ability/intangibles to become a Pro Bowl player. Expect to start immediately except in a unique situation (i.e. behind a veteran starter).
70-84 Eventual Starter 2nd-3rd A quality player who will contribute to the team early on and is expected to develop into a starter. A reliable player who brings value to the position.
50-69 Draftable Player 4th-7th A prospect with the ability to make team as a backup/role player. Needs to be a special teams contributor at applicable positions. Players in the high range of this category might have long-term potential.
20-49 Free Agent UDFA A player with solid measurables, intangibles, college achievements, or a developing skill that warrants an opportunity in an NFL camp. In the right situation, he could earn a place on a 53-man roster, but most likely will be a practice squad player or a camp body
