14 Killed in Shooting in San Bernardino (3 Viewers)

Things I learned in this thread:

-The Black Panthers are staunch Republicans

-Way too many unstable people have concealed carry permits

I think I'm more surprised anybody actually expected a good debate to happen over this because it never does, thread after thread.

Same as it ever was.

The radicalized San Bernardino gunman clashed with a Jewish co-worker over religion just two weeks before he and his Pakistani wife stormed an office holiday party where they massacred 14 people.

Syed Farook, 28, got into a heated argument with colleague Nicholas Thalasinos, a Messianic Jew who was identified today as one of the victims of Wednesday’s rampage.

It came as FBI agents discovered a huge arsenal of weapons and pipe bombs at a California home linked to Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik.

Agents discovered nearly 5,000 rounds of ammunition, a dozen pipe bombs and hundreds of tools for making improvised explosive devices at the property, law enforcement officials revealed today.

It also emerged that the US-born Farook appeared to have been radicalized and was in touch by phone and via social media with more than one international terrorism subject, which may have in part motivated the attacks, CNN reported, citing investigators.

And it is unclear if the earlier argument between Farook and Thalasinos played any role in the massacre – but authorities said Farook had left the party ‘angry’.

Kuuleme Stephens said she had happened to call Thalasinos while he was at work and having a discussion with Farook.

Thalasinos identified Farook by name and told her the 28-year-old believed Islam was a peaceful religion. She added that Farook said that Americans do not understand Islam.

Stephens said both men worked as county restaurant inspectors and regularly discussed politics and religion.

Thalasinos was passionate about pro-Israel causes and was known to rant about Islam on Facebook.

The New York Post reported that Thalasinos' Facebook page was filled with negative comments about Muslims and references to his conservative beliefs.

In one of his final status updates on Tuesday, Thalasinos responded to an anti-Semitic tirade allegedly penned by an apparent Muslim living in Ukraine, who railed against Jews and Israel.

‘Anyway my new hobby appears to be BLOCKING PAGAN ANTISEMITIC TROGLODYTES so I'm just passing this along to warn others,’ was Thalasinos' reply.

He was back online early on Wednesday morning sharing articles about Russian President Vladimir Putin and posting a negative comment about President Obama.

Perhaps some clues into his motive to this particular place and time instead of waiting for something else.

I'm actually surprised we haven't had an incident where someone with CCW tries to stop an active shooter situation and ends up getting shot by the cops.
Eventually that scenario will happen.

Wish they would use the word 'subhuman' in place of 'terrorist'. These losers love to be called 'terrorists'.

The question I have is.. they keep reporting that there are terrorist overseas they are monitoring and upon reviewing that information found this guy was communicating with them... if that is true..

why wasn't this guy on the watch list.. or at least investigated.. what is the purpose of monitoring these terrorist if we do nothing with that information

So in a weird twist it appears to be the perfect marriage of disgruntled coworker and terrorist attack...
I'm guessing it was a couple who may or not have been part of some bigger cell that was planning something, but then got so pissed off at co-workers they decided to say #### it and start their jihad early.

Nevermind, only two shooters both dead...

A common thread on all these seems to be a recent visit to the Mideast. At least on all the officially terrorist attacks: Hebdo, Paris, Madrid Train bombing...

If there is one element more common than social media contact with jihadists for radicalization, it's a visit to a predominantly Muslim country in the Mideast. And one is a lot easier to detect.

I haven't kept up - all three suspects dead?
I think its just the 2. I think the third guy was just someone who was fleeing from the shootings.

There never were 3.. just rumors reported as "facts" by the news yesterday.. heck during the live reports when the SUV was surrounded they kept reporting that one person rolled out of the SUV and was in custody while 2 other people were still in the suv.. hate the "we have to be the first to report it" news instead "lets get the facts right first" ..

San Bernardino killers erased digital presence day before the attacksThe husband and wife who carried out a deadly shooting spree in San Bernardino, California, began erasing their digital footprint a day in advance of the attack — deleting email accounts, disposing of hard drives and smashing their cell phones, according to law enforcement sources involved in the investigation.

Officials are still working to determine what motivated Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik to storm a conference room inside the Inland Regional Center as a holiday party was taking place Wednesday and spray the room with bullets.

Fourteen people were killed and 21 others injured either in the initial attack or as police engaged in a firefight that mortally wounded the heavily armed couple.

Officials involved in the investigation say the couple appeared to have gone to great lengths to conceal their plans — a cell phone recovered from Ms. Malik’s body was newly purchased and had had been used only recently. Two other cell phones that were recovered had been smashed with a hammer and were expected to be sent to the FBI’s forensic lab in Washington for examination.

Authorities also noted that a hard drive and motherboard are missing from a computer found at the Redlands, California, home the couple rented.

On Thursday, investigators revealed that 12 pipe bombs and more than 4,500 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the home. That’s in addition to more than 1,500 rounds of ammunition found in the SUV that the couple used as they tried to evade police.

San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said police had been surveilling the home when a car was seen leaving the location. Officers began a pursuit and Malik began firing at officers from the backseat of the rented SUV as Farook drove to evade them. In all, the attackers fired 76 rounds at police while law enforcement officers unleashed about 380 rounds, according to the chief.

The SUV was rented three days ahead of the attack.

Two assault rifles and two handguns found in the possession of the suspects were purchased several years ago, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Both officials with the FBI and the San Bernardino Police Department declined to say whether Wednesday’s shooting spree at the Inland Regional Center was motivated by terrorism. A law enforcement source said investigators have already tracked down at least four individuals from the Los Angeles area who were previously under some sort of investigation by counter-terrorism officials and have had some sort of communication with Farook.

The last contact any of those individuals had with Farook was in June however, and source said nothing fruitful had come of the interviews with those individuals.

Investigators are still probing the possibility that Farook, who was a U.S. citizen, and Malik, who held a Pakistani passport, may have been radicalized by Islamist extremists either in the U.S. or during trips the couple made to the Middle East, including to Saudi Arabia.

WaTimes but seems very realistic.

I wish Obama would just man up and pass some kind of executive order outlawing sales of firearms until we go one full quarter without a senseless shooting.

Major fail here on State's part. Given the state of the world until ISIS is put into a very small bottle we, as a nation, should consider severely restricting visas from a host of countries in the ME.
How about all, as well as making tourism there illegal. I mean are we fighting a ####### war or not? I don't think we had a very open immigration policy toward Germany during WW2.

No. I have gone on record many times saying there is nothing more stupid or naive when it comes to human nature than the 2nd amendment. It is a completely laughable, outdated notion based on centuries old arms and people.

Nothing on earth could be more stupid than saying every single natural born citizen in the United States is sane and responsible enough to own a gun and not be a danger to others or themselves.

You know, this isn't a bad idea. Heck, since it's completely against the 2nd it wouldn't have any real effect at all. BUT, I do think this may actually make Sean Hannity's head explode.

I vote yes.

I'm looking for an analogy here. I almost went with gasoline meets match, but that is really quite far off.

so how does the stopping of new gun sales stop something like this happening? Or do you think this order would be around for years until every gun out there right now just stopped working.. and if so do we outlaw repair materials and those that repair legally owned guns?Or do you think we should not sell any new guns and send out troops to round up any guns people currently own legally?

Just seems strange to say "stop selling new guns" and think that would be all that is needed.

Folks, gun control and terrorism are two different issues. Terrorists do not give a damn about legalization or control of guns. And you are not going to halt terrorism by tweaking gun laws.

Well it's always something, isn't it?

Our liberal view of sex, the way women are here, the way we speak freely, the tv, the internet, the books, the art, our politics, it's everything.

Said Qutb started the Muslim Brotherhood after living and going to school in Fort Collins Colorado. It freaked him out, especially the women (in the 1950s mind you), so much that it outraged him and gave him basis to start his political party. It has foamed into AQ and ISIS today. There is a can be a major clash of beliefs and culture. - eta - Obviously nearly all American muslims are great citizens. But there are going to be these extreme fundamentalists who see jihad as an external means of correcting what they see as morally wrong.

Just a thought in all this: Is Congress bereft of any sense? People on the NO FLY LIST are permitted to buy guns, explosives, etc! Are we nuts to allow that?

San Bernardino shooting update: FBI says assailants may have used Al Qaeda bomb manualResponding to a question from KPCC, a lead FBI investigator on the San Bernardino shooting said agents were looking into whether the 12 pipe bombs discovered in a Redlands home were based on designs from Al Qaeda’s "Inspire" magazine.

"We knew that question would come up," said Los Angeles Field Office Assistant Director David Bowditch. "We’re looking into it as we speak."

The bombs were discovered in a home linked to Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, who officials say killed 14 and wounded 21 at a San Bernardino social services center on Wednesday.

In its first issue published more than five years ago, the English-language magazine featured an article titled “How To Make A Bomb In The Kitchen Of Your Mom.” That same article was cited as the blueprint for the improvised bombs used by Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings.

The article gives detailed instructions on how to build an improvised explosive device using components readily available at grocery and hardware stores. While the Tsarnaevs chose pressure-cookers as the container for their bombs, Farook and Malik chose sealed pipes to enclose their bombs, law enforcement officials said.

San Bernardino police chief Jarrod Burguan revealed the discovery of the bombs during a press conference.

No details were given as to whether or how the pipe bombs were defused, but witnesses reported hearing loud bangs coming from the Redlands home during the search Wednesday night. The noises could come from tools used by bomb squad technicians to disable pipe bombs.

"We have continued collecting evidence, and are continuing to collect evidence at the multiple [crime] scenes," Bowditch said. "We are going to fly some evidence back to our laboratory in Washington D.C. today on a plane. That is because we want expeditious analysis of that evidence."

The FBI will likely take the remnants of the disabled bombs to their Terrorist Explosive Device Analytical Center in Quantico, Va., where agents can pull biometric data from parts and pieces that could show whether anyone other than the two attackers had a hand in making the bombs.

Can we at least get this ####### law passed?

If you decide to "vacation" or travel into any known terrorist state, you are banned from re-entering the United States, ever again.

I don't care if you're a jew, Catholic, baptist, Muslim, or an alien. Step foot in a terrorist state, you're banned from U.S. soil.

Sure, so lets keep making it as easy as possible for terrorists and other people who want to inflict mass causalities to get as many guns as possible. Then lets prompt more non-terrorist or otherwise crazy americans to buy more guns so they can be ready to step in and stop them. What could possibly go wrong?

I have been to this regional center.

Just in case you don't know what the regional center is. It is a non profit that helps people with developmental disabilities. They treat a lot of children with autism. downs and asbergers etc. Most times for free.

So in case you weren't angry enough these people shot up a building full of disabled kids, specifically killing people who help disabled kids.

You know it is always weird when you were at a spot where something like this has happened. I used to drive through the Reginald Denny intersection, I had been in the twin towers, this one is too much.

You always think what would you do if you were there?

Regional center surprisingly is a very secure facility. It has many one way doors and none that will let you directly out without a passcode. This is due to the nature of dealing with disabled adults and kids. Many autistic kids will elope. They just take off. Some adults will just wander off if not contained.

The only reason that guy got in there was he was an employee, it would have been extremely difficult for anyone to get out. Impossible if you were there for treatment and didn't have a card.
Hey LS not sure why folks are tearing into this post. Whether the kids were the intended target or not I found it interesting that you detailed the security and bring up the point that these purps had access because they were employees. You also are conveying that new laws don't need to be enacted tomorrow to beef up security here, you are basically saying that short of being an employee no one is getting in or out of this place.

14 people were executed, I'm sure each and every one of them will be missed and was doing some kind of good in the world. Whether they were directly involved with the kids doesn't make it any more or less of a crime, pretty much heinous all the way around.
We are very concerned about semantics on this board and people are trying to show how smart they are.

The fact that the people using the room were health department employees from another department somehow overshadows the added disgust I feel towards people who would bring bombs and guns into a campus with very vulnerable children, adults and charitable adults.

I now know that me being upset that someone would bring bombs into the regional center is unjustified as the kids were supposedly being treated in the connected building and there was no chance that any regional employees or disabled adults who work there could possibly be in the building that was attacked.

Any concern for the school for the blind would be plain silly as it is clear across the parking lot.

I have used the services at Harbor Regional campus about 200 times and only been to San Bernadino a couple of times. I just thought I would share.

Oh yeah by the way there were kids in the building
