16 Team Draft Tonight (8/24) (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
16 teams. Start 1 QB, 2 RBs, 3 WRs, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 Defense. 14 roster spots. Standard FBG scoring but 6 points for passing TDs. (No PPR.)

So I'm thinking going in that it's going to be thin with 32 RBs and 48 WRs starting every week. With only 5 bench spots, I planned not to draft backups at TE, K, or Defense, and figured I'd take a backup QB, 2 backup RBs, and 2 backup WRs.

Here is the draft:

Comments on my team and draft strategy here.

1.3 Larry Johnson. Was hoping for Jackson but felt I had to take LJ here. The only other player I considered was Gore.

2.14 Steve Smith. Surprised he fell to me here. 3 other WRs (Harrison, CJ, Holt) went earlier. Thought going into the draft that I'd have to take a RB2 either here or at 3.3, but couldn't pass on Smith to take the 23rd RB in the draft.

3.3 Reggie Wayne. Owens went in between my picks, so he was the 6th WR taken. I felt he was better value than Ahman Green or Deuce McAllister, and I also felt I might be able to find decent RB value later given almost everyone else would be switching from RB to other positions. Wanted to be in front of the runs, not trailing them.

4.14 Deshaun Foster. I thought he was good value as the 31st RB off the board. Looks like he will be the starter. He finished as RB32 last year, despite missing 2 games and scoring only 3 TDs. If he can stay healthy and/or get a few more TDs this year, he should be able to easily outperform his draft position. Obviously, the risk here is that Deangelo Williams overtakes him during the season.

5.3 Tony Romo. I really like him this year, and got him as QB12. Should easily outperform that position. I wanted to get him given that 13 teams were going to pick twice before my next pick, and 4 of them did not have any QBs... didn't like the prospects at QB16 or later nearly as much.

6.14 Jericho Cotchery. I'm biased as a N.C. State fan. But I think he was reasonable value as the 36th WR taken... I thought about taking the Ravens defense here, as the Chicago defense had just been taken and I thought it might spark a run as well as getting me a top scoring defense... but I couldn't bring myself to do it.

7.3 Chris Cooley. Reasonable value as the 8th TE taken. Didn't want to pass on TE here and end up not getting a top 10 TE because there was a run before my 8.14 pick. It was important to me to get a top 10 TE not only because of the point production but also because I didn't want to feel compelled to hold a backup TE on my bench. With only 5 bench players, I intended not to backup TE, K, or Defense.

8.14 Fred Taylor. I thought this was unbelievable value as the 40th RB off the board. He finished as RB18 in this scoring system last year. While he may not repeat, I do not expect him to fall out of the top 30.

9.3 Leon Washington. I saw Washington as the best remaining RB, with few others I'd be okay with plugging into my lineup. I figured there was a good chance I wouldn't get any of them if I passed on RB here. I really like Washington this year, especially with Jones nursing an injury already. This along with the previous pick made me feel much better about going WR-WR in the second and third.

10.14 Miami defense. I got them as the 11th defense off the board, so they are reasonable value. That said, I wasn't that high on them... going into the draft I hoped for San Diego or Jacksonville, or maybe even Denver, but all were gone.

11.3 J.P. Losman. 26th QB off the board. Very good value there, and I felt that QBs were about to fall off a cliff.

12.14 Kevin Curtis. Fantastic value as the 62nd WR taken and as my WR4. Could platoon him with Cotchery.

13.3 Olindo Mare. Snagged the 13th kicker off the board but think he will be better than that in the Saints offense.

14.14 Demetrius Williams. Pretty good upside for the 69th WR taken. Was hoping for Craig Davis here, but mostly because I'm a Chargers fan... Williams could easily be as good or better.

So I accomplished my goal of being at least solid at every position. As I posted above, DD with current projections likes my overall team the best. With respect to bye weeks, I have no issues other than that Mare and Cooley have the same bye week, and it is early (week 4)... so I'll have to cut one or two players to pick up replacements or eat a zero. But I'm confident I'll manage.

DD has my team going undefeated when using total team strength, and with 11 wins and two question marks when using starters only. DD certainly isn't perfect, but I'm not sure it has ever rated my team as strongly against my competition.

Any thoughts on my team or the draft?

I draft in a 16-team league on Wednesday night. Your draft is interesting to examine. Interesting to me that despite some stretch picks at QB and WR in the late first and early second rounds, there still weren't great RB2 options for you at 2.14. Holt before Steve Smith? Wow. I bet you were very pleased when you saw that. Smith fell in your lap. I, too, really like Fred Taylor that late. I have him circled for a value pick later in the draft. If I got him in the 8th, I'd be very happy. I agree with taking Cotchery over D that early.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree that RB2 options at 2.14 were not good and that Smith was a gift. Smith & Wayne is a strong WR tandem in a 16 team league. And I was very surprised to get Taylor as late as I did. That said, I'm not really looking forward to choosing between Foster, Taylor, and Washington every week... I realize Washington will likely not be a strong consideration as long as Jones is healthy, so I have to hope that either Foster or Taylor clearly emerges as a dependable option... otherwise I can see possibly having trouble getting the right guy into my lineup every week.

The good news is that you have LJ as a given every week. The guys who do the FBG podcast are speculating that the schedule will favor LJ later in the season rather than earlier, for what it's worth, so if he isn't signature LJ for the first half, don't get suckered into a trade. In a 16 team league, I think there is going to be a position where there is uncertainty each week no matter what you do. If you make sure you have two RB starters, you will probably have some tough decisions to make at WR. If someone shores up both WR and RB early in the draft, they'd probably end up having to decide between Joey Harrington or Duante Cullpepper at QB each week. The size of the league dictates it.

All good points. I agree about LJ. His performance may not approach last year's but I won't be trading him unless I get some kind of spectacular offer. I have posted plenty in the Shark Pool about how safe a bet he is IMO to finish as a top 5-8 RB.Best case scenario for me would be that before week 4, I can pull off a 2 for 1 trade to improve somewhere, by moving a starter and bench player to improve the starter spot. This would also help me with my week 4 bye week problem in which I have both my kicker and TE off, with no backup for either currently on my roster... currently would have to cut 2 players or eat one or two zeros...So I'm hoping Demetrius Williams or Curtis starts off really strong so I can pair one of them with a starter to upgrade. For example, a Cooley + hot WR for Gates trade... that would really help since I'd defer the TE bye week and have an open spot to cover the K. But I need Cooley and a WR to start strong and Gates to start slow... probably unlikely. But these are the sort of scenarios I'll be looking for.I do have to guard against overtrading. In the past I have typically drafted good teams and worked the WW well, but I have a tendency to trade my depth too early. Must be patient.

Sounds like a plan.

Incidentally, I was a little surprised that Jacoby Jones wasn't drafted in your league. They have been saying good things about him on the FBG podcasts. Of course, the teams in your league appear to draft WR a little lean in favor of other positions, e.g. several teams took backup PK. That would seem to me to work in your favor, as I don't really "get" spending a roster spot on a second PK.

Thanks for posting your entire draft. I used it to develop some customized numbers for my VBD baseline. The result was a fresh look to the player rankings.

I should note that we drafted via CBS Sportsline, and a few teams (Coles Crushers, Brightwell Bombers, White Shoes Johnson) were autodrafted. I think those teams all preranked players, but the autodrafter still does some funny things. I think only one of the non-autodrafted teams took a backup PK.

I agree it is surprising Jacoby Jones wasn't drafted. And Scaife was another. Both have been picked up since the draft.

Hey JWB,

Not sure if you are going to see this, but we just had our 16-team draft last night and I am aspiring for your input. First off, we have a roster of 16 slots, but last night we only drafted 14 (logistics issue). I can pick up two more players as Free Agents off waivers. Here's my team and my impressions.

1.04 Joseph Addai RB IND - Got the fourth pick, which for me was actually kind of a tough spot as I had Addai, Parker, and Gore about the same. I went with Addai, which is fine. Not great, but fine.

2.13 Steve Smith, WR CAR - I was surprised that Smith fell to me here. I was happy. Fourth WR taken (Harrison, Fitzgerald!!, CJ).

3.04 Brandon Jacobs, RB NYG - Lots of RBs were off the board at this point. Everyone else left was much more of a RBBC question, so I went with Jacobs.

4.13 Roy Williams, WR DET - I had him pegged as the next best player almost immediately after my third round pick, and really felt fortunate that he got all the way back to me at the tail end of the 4th.

05.04 Philip Rivers, QB SD - I kind of stretched here. He was the 12th QB off the board. I thought that there was going to be a secong run on mid-tier QBs in rounds 5-6, so I took him while I could. I took him over Romo, which may have been a mistake, but we'll see. Turns out I probably could have waited another round or two as Romo went in Round 8! *&$*# Oh well.

06.13 Braylon Edwards WR CLE - He was there and his ADP says he should have been gone two rounds prior. I took him. Could have taken Santonio Holmes here as well, but I live in Pittsburgh and given the choice would rather not have home players on my team. Weird, I know. Edwards needs someone to get him the rock ... that's his risk, clearly.

07.04 Leon Washington RB NYJ - I perceived a drop in RB quality after Washington, and given I only had two RBs on my roster to this point, I didn't want to risk 26 picks going by without getting him. ADP is 08.09, so it was a small reach.

08.13 D.J. Hackett, WR SEA - If Washington was a slight reach in the round above, I thought Hackett was slightly good value here.

09.04 Bo Scaife, TE TEN - I liked what people were saying about Scaife, so I had him circled as a good mid-tier TE I could live with as a starter. Twelve TEs flew off the board in rounds 7 & 8, but Scaife was still there in 9.

10.13 Chris Brown, RB TEN - Everyone else forgot about him I guess. I mean, he t'ain't great and may not technically be starting, but he's an RB that gets carries and I got him in the late tenth after other guys took players like Marcel Shipp and Antonio Pittman, so I liked the pick.

11.04 JP Losman QB BUF - Needed a backup QB. He was available at a pretty good slot.

12.13 Jason Elam PK DEN - I was the last team to draft a kicker and got Elam. I think that's pretty darn good. Does everyone else know something I don't?

13.04 Joey Harrington QB ATL - Perhaps my most bewildering pick. I already had my two QBs. But he was just so there and there's something sickly intriguing about him this year. Probably should have taken a DEF here. Fortunately, at least three teams left the draft with some need for another QB. Two took QBs with the same bye week (Doh! for them), and the third only drafted one QB period. So, I guess I can wait and see what happens for a few weeks, then trade Losman or Harrington for other help depending on how things play out. Who knows? Maybe Rivers will go down and I'll be glad I have both.

14.13 Tampa Bay DEF - I basically eschewed defense and plan to play DEF on the float each week according to matchups. DET is playing OAK this week, so I might pick up DET rather than play TB against SEA.

Overall, I think I'm strong. Could have gone a little better, but also could have gone A LOT worse. DD says I have the highest total team strenght, 2nd for starters only (behind the LT team). Obviously, I will have to fiddle with DEF each week, but I think there is so much variance around DEF that, unless you get CHI or BAL, there's very little differentiation that can't be largely offset through smart matchups. I'm also weak at TE, but better weak at TE than WR, RB, or QB. Draft Dominator says my WRs are the best of the league. Can't argue with DD there. RBs are top 4 according to DD. Perhaps, but I'd be happier if Chris Brown got the starting job back in TEN.

As I mentioned earlier, I can go out and put in waiver pickups for two spots. Do you have suggestions from the following undrafted WR/RB, or do you think I should address another position? This league seemed to leave a lot of fair WR / RB backups on the board. Leonard intrigues me at RB for whatever reason, and there are all sorts of choices at WR, but I'm already deep there.

Brian Leonard, RB, STL

Jesse Chatman, RB, MIA

Sammy Morris, RB, NE

Maurice Morris, RB, SEA

Jerome Harrison, RB, CLE

Bobby Wade, WR, MIN

Roddy White, WR, ATL

Jacoby Jones, WR, HOU

James Jones, WR, GB

Patrick Crayton, WR, DAL

Troy Williamson, WR, MIN

I would have considered all the same guys. Probably would have taken Gore, but I do like Addai.
2.13 Steve Smith, WR CAR - I was surprised that Smith fell to me here. I was happy. Fourth WR taken (Harrison, Fitzgerald!!, CJ).
Obviously, I like this pick. :D Surprised to see that he fell that far in another 16 team draft. Great value.
3.04 Brandon Jacobs, RB NYG - Lots of RBs were off the board at this point. Depending on who was available, I may have waited on Jacobs and taken either Gates or a WR... but it really depends on a lot of context that I can't tell, so I may have done exactly what you did. In any event, given that you got Williams in the 4th to pair with Jacobs, it worked out great for you and was the right move. Very surprised to see Williams there for you in the 4th. Do you start 3 WRs every week? If so, I don't know what your leaguemates were thinking on Smith and Williams.
I'm probably the biggest Rivers fan on this board. I think he will do great this season and is underrated around here. I think he was reasonable value as the 12th QB taken, 5th round or not. Picking 4th in a 16 team league, I know there is a lot of pick between your 5th and 6th round picks... in your situation I would not have felt confident that I could wait. I recognize the benefits of waiting on QB, but I also don't want to get stuck with QB16 or worse... So I would have taken a QB. All that said, I probably would have taken Romo, but it's very close. I might even have thought about Romo and Rivers back to back, thinking trade later. In a 16 team league, starting QBs get pretty thin.
Good value. I really like Holmes, so this would have been a tough decision for me... but I would have probably taken the clear WR1 for his own team, Edwards. Many feel he is primed for a breakout season. He is great as your third WR, assuming you start 3.
07.04 Leon Washington RB NYJ - I perceived a drop in RB quality after Washington, and given I only had two RBs on my roster to this point, I didn't want to risk 26 picks going by without getting him. ADP is 08.09, so it was a small reach.
At this point in the draft, it's hard to know without knowing the context (who was available, what other teams were doing, scoring system and starting lineup, etc.). I really like Washington. However, I'd prefer him as my RB4, as I got him, rather than as my RB3. Depending on who was available, I may have waited. In particular, I might have looked for a TE here.
08.13 D.J. Hackett, WR SEA - If Washington was a slight reach in the round above, I thought Hackett was slightly good value here.
Good value. Doubt you'll play him much other than in bye weeks. Without looking, hopefully your top 4 WRs don't share bye weeks, meaning you don't have to go deeper than Hackett other than in an emergency. I might have looked for a TE here.

09.04 Bo Scaife, TE TEN - I liked what people were saying about Scaife, so I had him circled as a good mid-tier TE I could live with as a starter. Twelve TEs flew off the board in rounds 7 & 8, but Scaife was still there in 9.
Good value this late I suppose, but I think you'll be trailing a lot of teams at TE. I think TE is a position that is sometimes overlooked.
Good value. Unless and until White takes over the lion's share of the TEN feature RB role, you have a very good pair of backups here. (I'm not saying White will push Brown out, just saying if it happens you will suddenly be thin at backup RB.)
11.04 JP Losman QB BUF - Needed a backup QB. He was available at a pretty good slot.
Very good backup QB IMO.
12.13 Jason Elam PK DEN - I was the last team to draft a kicker and got Elam. I think that's pretty darn good. Does everyone else know something I don't?
Wow, 15 kickers went before him? Don't know of any reason for that. That is amazing value.
Probably wouldn't have made this pick, especially if there was a decent defense available. Then again, after my draft I picked up Garrard as a third QB precisely because of the lack of QB depth in a 16 team league (i.e., hoping to trade). Maybe that will work out for you.
14.13 Tampa Bay DEF - I basically eschewed defense and plan to play DEF on the float each week according to matchups. DET is playing OAK this week, so I might pick up DET rather than play TB against SEA.
May have been the best where you got them, but this is a pretty weak defense IMO. I have tried the defense by committee approach in the past, but it is harder than it seems. Good luck there... I think you may be giving up points to the field here.
Not sure I agree with your thoughts on Defense, but I agree this is a strong team in a 16 team league.

None of these guys jumps out at me, other than Crayton - it is very conceivable he could end up as Dallas's WR2. And maybe Chatman? There have been rumors that he'll share the load with Brown, though I'm not sure whether or not to believe them. I think Leonard is a bit overrated, but he could certainly be a home run if Jackson goes down.Nice job overall. :D

Thanks much for the feedback. We start 2 RB, 2 WR and a WR/RB flex. Yeah, I should have taken DEF in round 13 rather than Harrington. Six DEF went off the board between when I drafted at 13 and 14. Live and learn. Now I have to figure out what to do with these last two picks. Do you see any value in even picking up a backup TE like David Martin, Utecht, or Alex Smith at this point? The only DEF left are WAS, CLE, NO, and HOU. Slim pickins fer sure.
