1st Pick in draft - options and ideas (1 Viewer)

Hi all, I have first pick this year.  Yes, that means I was dead last last year.  I stunk.  But, redraft is an all new year.  So I've been doing some mock drafts to figure out options for being first pick.  I'm going to ask to limit the conversation to the first 5 rounds here.  That means I pick 1, 23, 24, 47 and 48.  Having done multiple drafts I think I can safely guess these two options are available.

1)  The all FLEX players choice.  If I go this route I end up with Johnson AZ, A Cooper OAK, L Miller TEX, Kelce and some mix of solid WRs/RBs like D Thomas, Crabtree, T Coleman, etc.  It's a solid skill set roster.  Problem is - I miss out on any of the top 6-7 QBs and it seems as if I always end up with Prescott or Cam Newton.  Maybe Jameis Winston.

2)  I can opt for a QB in the 47 or 48 slot and have the same first 3 guys and Brady or Luck instead of one of the last skill choices.

I am limiting it here as I need to nail down the first 5 picks and honestly I think my biggest weakness is I get lost in the middle rounds and will need the Draft Dominator to help there.

So opinions - which would be the stronger team in your opinions?

PS - league is standard 12 team QB, 2 RBs, 2 WRs, TE, Flex, D/ST, K.

PPS - I hate spell check converting QBs and RBs to abs.  Really darned annoying.   :P

Option 1 as you have outlined is always the best way to go.  Never lock your self into a particular position for a particular round prior to your draft.  You must be flexible and be able to adapt to how the draft is going.  If you force a pick because I have to have position X by now you will really hurt your draft over time.  Do research.  Have a good list organized by value and then trust your list.  Don't force a position.

I haven't been in any re-draft that uses the reverse standings from the previous  year as the draft order.  I would hate that.  What does last year have to do with this year is you don't get to keep any of your players that helped you to the title (or last place)?  I just find that strange.

Thanks Gally.  I am leaning towards just go down the list in order of value for the first 7 players.  After that, if I already have a great QB I might skip down to another position.  Or reach lower to fill TE.  Or whatever.  But I get it.  Thanks.  BTW this is the only league I've ever been in and it has always been total redraft.  Year before I won it and drafted last.  I'm OK with it cause I think a snake draft evens out.

Typically in a redraft the league does something random to choose the draft order.  In my redrafts we have even changed a bit where you are drawing a card to be in an order to select your draft position.  A lot of people may prefer to be on an end and some like to be in the middle because an end is too long between picks.  So we pull cards and whoever gets the ace chooses their draft position, #2 is next to choose and so on down the line.  It's an interesting twist to the draft order and allows for a little more flexibility.

I would caution against limiting taking the BPA for 7 picks or 9 picks or whatever.  Eventually you have to start filling positions but I would hold off as long as you can and always take the best value regardless of position.  Owners that start reaching too soon because they have to have position X usually end up costing themselves better players because I have to have a certain position.  Stay flexible.  That is the key.

I would not worry about QB at all this year.  The top 12 QBs are all pretty close other than the top 2 overall.  In mock drafts I've been waiting and taking guys like Carr or even later for Winston and Mariota.
