2 RB, 3 WR League Drafts (1 Viewer)

mon

(T)ool
With .5 PPR for RB and 1 PPR for WR, VBD says draft (12 teams):

6 S. Smith

8 C. Johnson

9 Harrison

13 Holt

14 Owens

15 Housh

16 Fitz

Have people really been drafting WRs this early? Or has the "draft 2 RBs first" philosophy prevailed?

What's happened in your draft in leagues like this?

Absolutely take at least one RB in the first two rounds.

From picks 1-9 you probably should take 2 RBs with the first two picks

From picks 10-12 you can mix it up more but make sure you take 2 RBs in the first 3 rounds.

I had the 10th pick out of 12 and I took Maroney+McGahee and still got quality WRs in rds. 3 and 4 (Roy Williams, Colston).

What I did in a PPR league was draft an RB first, then I drafted RBs or WRs for the first 6 rounds based on who I thought the best was out of who was available.

In a PPR you have more flexibility in the first few rounds to take WRs over RBs, but make sure you have at least 2 RBs by then end of round 4 (5 if you are getting great WRs).

You don't want to get caught with not enough RBs, but you also don't want to let great WRs slip past you to get a lesser RB.

That's what I'm thinking, and I'll definitely pick a RB at my pick 6. I want a RB at 19 also, but I'm pretty sure the value will be at WR. I just can't see 9 WRs going in the first 18 picks, as VBD says.

The problem if you do take wrs early you will really be reaching for rbs later and every round the "value" pick will be the top wr still out there.

Yes, I did the same thing. In rounds 1-6 I drafted RB-RB-WR-WR-WR-RB. Many other teams filled in those picks with a QB or TE and they all seriously lack RB depth. Many teams 4 RBs but none of them start.I thought I did ok with Maroney, McGahee, Roy Williams, Colston, S. Moss, and then getting Caddy in the 6th. I drafted QBs late (Kitna, E. Manning and TE late too (Witten). It's not a sexy team with superstars, but solid. I have one of the only 2 teams with 3 bona-fide starting RBs, the other having Jamal Lewis, Larry Johnson and Ahman Green.

That makes good sense, and I agree. Now I'll wait for a VBD fan to post about how important grabbing value is, then I'll agree with him. I guess my real problem is I don't like most of the top WRs and the inherent risk of drafting one so high (at 19).

most people seriously overvalue RBs in a PPR system... especially one that gives 1PPR for WR.

I went RB / WR / WR / WR / RB in a draft today. Granted, it was a 10 teamer with some soft competition but people were reaching for subpar RBs while top shelf WRs left sitting out there.

This year there is a large 3rd tier of RBs... guys like Green / F Taylor / Foster etc who can be had later in drafts (4-6th rounds) and can make more than serviceable RB2s.. especially if you have a very solid RB1 (ie pick in the first 5-6 picks). In those cases I'll try to snag 3 top-12 WRs then grab 2 RBs in that 3rd tier... then another guy like Rhodes or Betts a little later on.

A few years ago I got LT2 at 1.01 then grabbed holt/CJ at the turn and it won me my league.

This year in a soft 10 teamer (PPR) i was able to assemble the following squad:

Romo / Kitna

SJax (1.02) / Portis // Green / Foster / Betts

Harrison / TO / A Johnson // S Holmes / I Bruce

Shockey

Don't undervalue WRs in PPR... .and definitely do be afraid to use a shotgun approach on serviceable RB2 / RB3 types

We play 1 or 2 RB & 3 or 4 WR (total of 5) so I am in the same boat. Absolutely agree that you want at least one RB early and then load up on WR. Unless an RB that you really like falls to you in the second round, load up on the top 5-10 WR (depending on your rankings and when the drop-off occurs). I just had my draft yesterday and loaded up on top WRs and will hopefully find someone for my #2 RB throughout the season. I have to pick from Green, Foster, Norwood, Betts type guys for my #2 (to go along with Jackson), but I believe I have the advantage at WR.

Draft is over. Wasn't able to get a quality RB at 2.7, but got a nice WR. By the first 18 picks, 13 RBs, 4 WRs, and 1 QB (Manning at 1.11) had been taken.

My first six:

1.6 Bush (VBD = 1.3)

2.7 T.O. (VBD = 2.2)

3.6 Gates (VBD = 2.7)

4.7 A. Peterson (VBD = 3.5)

5.6 Barber

6.7 V. Young

Overall, I was happy with how things went.

I have one league that is 2RB/3WR, plus one flex, and it is PPR (+1) for WR/TE only. I think people in that league seriously overvalued RBs. I picked 12th (3rd rd reversal):

1.12 M Harrison

2.01 C Johnson

3.01 C Benson

4.12 B Jacobs

5.01 L Coles

6.12 BAL

7.01 B Jackson

8.12 B Roethlisberger

9.01 DJ Hackett

Note: A little odd for me to go DEF that early but I've been picking 10/10 or 12/12 in an inordinate # of leagues this year and it has often seemed like a value thing to do. I also like that even though I picked 12th I may have gotten two #1s at their pos (WR and DEF). Simplifies the roster some, too.

10 team Yahoo draft, no PPR. Having the 1st pick and drafting LT2 made it a lot easier to go RB-WR-WR. Came right back with RB's the next 4 picks, but still managed to get some decent WR3 candidates in Holmes and Bruce.

1. (1) LaDainian Tomlinson

2. (20) Steve Smith

3. (21) Marvin Harrison

4. (40) Clinton Portis

5. (41) Edgerrin James

6. (60) Ahman Green

7. (61) Michael Turner

8. (80) Santonio Holmes

9. (81) Jon Kitna

10. (100) Matt Leinart

11. (101) Isaac Bruce

12. (120) Jacksonville

13. (121) Owen Daniels

14. (140) Matt Stover

15. (141) Chris Henry

PPR .5 RBs 1 ppr WRs.

Drafted at 1.01 and took LT (obviously) and ended up with Owens/Fitz at 2.12/3.01 which i was happy with. Took A Peterson/Mcnabb with my next 2 and was able to grab Winslow/Santonio Holmes/ravens to give me a squad with a bit of quality anyway.

Tatum bell/A Thomas/ Brandon Marshall/Isaac Bruce also there for some depth. Was worried abotu what i would get after LT but wasnt too bad.

Two 12 team redrafts I've gone back-to-back WR in 2&3. (.5 per catch, start 1/2/3/1/1/1, 4 passing TD, 6 for Ru/Re)I've been going RB 1st then double down on WRs in 2 & 3 to land basically two top 5 WRs (Smith/Wayne) and (TO/Wayne), then landed Peterson as my RB2 in the 4th in both!

If picking late go back, wide, wide, back. The RB's are really deep this year. Not much drop off between early 2nd round backs and early 4th round backs. I drafted Maroney, Chad, Colston, and Edge from the 11 spot in a league last weekend.
