20+ MLB players to be suspended? Braun, A-Rod? (1 Viewer)

In a statement accompanied by watery eyes and dramatic pauses, Alex Rodriguez addressed the media ahead of his first game since last October—and for the first time since MLB announced a 211-game suspension for his role in the Biogenesis scandal."The last seven months have been a nightmare," Rodriguez opened. "Probably the worst time of my life."
Poor guy.

Can't ever remember a guy who wanted so desperately to be liked who was so reviled instead.
Spot on. That's the best part. He NEEDS to be loved, yet he's universally hated. All the money in the world can't change that.

so I don't follow baseball closely anymore. Why is ARods suspension so much longer than everyone else's?
Racism
I read the MLB release. No way it sticks at 211 games. It will be reduced to 50.
Why would it be reduced to 50? He claims he didn't do anything wrong.
he has to say that. I think in reality hes appealing the length
That may be his initial intention, but the MLB case could fall apart rapidly. Bosch is cooperating now, but he'll potentially need to clam up if the feds continue to investigate him. You can't submit any statements he made prior without his testimony and any documents he produced are potentially excludable without his testimony. Additionally, MLB provided him compensation for his testimony in the form of indemnity, something that would bar his testimony in court. Now, the evidentiary rules in arbitration are less stringent, but what has been leaked is hardly an airtight case.

Monday: Accepted a 50-game ban.

----

EVERTH CABRERA, SS, Padres

What he did: Batted .283 with league-leading 37 SB

Monday: Accepted a 50-game ban.

----

Monday: Accepted a 50-game ban.

----

FRANCISCO CERVELLI, C, Yankees

What he did: Limited to only 52 at bats because of injury. Currently on the disabled list.

Monday: Accepted a 50-game ban.

----

JESUS MONTERO, C, Mariners

He and Kobe are both contrived and manufactured personalities and have been since age 18. At least Kobe embraced the bad guy persona. Arod is just arrogant and fake.

Is that what we are calling rape these days?

Haven't followed baseball in a long time, but why is he still playing? Looking at his stats he should have retired a couple years ago.

Not to hijack but being that Rose is mentioned.. A friend of mine was in Vegas a couple years back and Pete was doing an autograph session. At the table were 3 or 4 TV/monitors. The guys wife asked if Pete would allow a picture of her husband and her together, when he went behind the table the monitors had horse racing on them, so he assumed Pete was betting the ponies while doing an autograph session. Also he would sign the ball, " I bet on baseball" for an extra 300 bucks. As much as i liked him on the field, besides Denny Mclain he has to be the most vile person in the history of the game

Really?!? Mclain served 8 years in prison. Pretty sure Mel Hall was worse.

Mel Hall: Convicted of three counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and two counts of indecency with a child. Currenyly serving a 45 year prison term.

Then there are a lot of people between McLain and Rose. Just to name a few:

Ugueth Urbina: convicted of attempted murder. Served five and a half years in prison.

Julio Machado: convicted of murder. Served four years in prison.

Miltion Bradley: Convicted of spousal battery, assault with a deadly weapon, and making criminal threats. Sentenced to two and half years in prison.

etc, etc...

It's easy to vilify Rose as being the worst because he holds records. The most vile of all baseball players in hisotry were pretty average.

Retired? Maybe by ARod standards, his numbers are down, but he hit .272 last year with 18 home runs. That's above average for a major league player. Why would he retire based on his stats?

List of suspended players:

Rodriguez

Cruz

Peralta

Cabrera

Montero

Cervelli

Martinez

Puello

Norberto

de los Santos

Bastardo

Valdespin

Escalona

Bud is doing a great job ridding the game of steroids Latinos.

Pete's a hustling street kid from Cincy. While I wouldn't trust him watching my money for me, and I resented his desperate attempt to lie for two decades to cover up his betting on baseball, "vile" is much too strong of a word. He's not a criminal.

Well... He did serve five months in prison for tax evasion, so technically he is a criminal.

Just when you think Ryan Fraud cannot be a bigger doosh, he reportedly requested support from other players while suggesting the FedEx courier was an anti-semite.

Guy is a collossal scumbag and can't seem to just shut his big fat mouth.

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/9579944/ryan-braun-lobbied-veteran-players-support-appeal-sources-say

When the Milwaukee Brewers' Ryan Braun accepted his 65-game suspension in an agreement under the drug-testing agreement, there was a strong, angry reaction from other players.

Some of that may be because of phone calls Braun made in the days leading up to the decision of his appeal, in February 2012.

According to sources, Braun called veteran players around baseball privately at that time to lobby for their support. In the calls -- confirmed by three sources -- Braun told other players that in the preparation for his appeal, some information had become known about the collector of his urine sample, Dino Laurenzi Jr., including that he was a Cubs fan -- with the implication he might work against Braun, who played for a division rival of the Cubs.

Braun, who is Jewish, also told the players that he had been told the collector was an anti-Semite.

The sources indicate that when Braun made his pleas for support to other players, he did so in anticipation of the possibility that he would lose his appeal. Instead, Braun became the first player to win an appeal.

A person close to Braun forwarded this statement to ESPN: "Ryan isn't currently commenting on anything -- rumor or reality -- related to his arbitration process or his suspension. He has acknowledged his mistakes, accepted his punishment, and is beginning to make amends and will comment at an appropriate time."

After his victory was announced, Braun referred obtusely to Laurenzi Jr. in the statement he made to reporters, in which he raised questions about his positive test.

"When FedEx received the samples, it then creates a chain of custody at the FedEx location where he eventually brought my sample to," Braun said in the statement. "It would have been stored in a temperature-controlled environment, and FedEx is used to handling clinical packaging. But most importantly, you then would become a number and no longer a name. So when we provide our samples, there is a number and no longer a name associated with the sample. That way there can't be any bias -- whether it's with FedEx, while it's traveling, at the lab in Montreal, in any way -- based on somebody's race, religion, ethnicity, what team they play for, whatever the case may be. As players, the confidentiality of this process is extremely important. It's always been extremely important, because the only way for the process to succeed is for the confidentiality and the chain of custody to work.

"Why he didn't bring it in, I don't know. On the day that he did finally bring it in, FedEx opened at 7:30. Why didn't he bring it in until 1:30? I can't answer that question. Why was there zero documentation? What could have possibly happened to it during that 44-hour period? There were a lot of things that we learned about the collector, about the collection process, about the way that the entire thing worked that made us very concerned and very suspicious about what could have actually happened."

Braun is expected to speak publicly for the first time since his drug suspension very soon, perhaps as soon as Monday. A source with knowledge of his thinking says Braun wants to make things right again.

Not sure why I should care if he's a scumbag or a doosh. I only really care if he can crush baseballs and steal bases.

Braun should be praised for his ferocity in lying and slandering others in attempting to help his team win.

Still not a huge fan of Alex, but the Red Sox being the judge and jury is a no no. There better be some significant retribution next time.

Why? Who decides what is and is not on a banned PED list and what qualifies something as such? If a Dr. can prescribe something for legitimate purposes to you or I, or something is obtainable over the counter, why can't a professional athlete use something that is otherwise perfectly legal to the general public, if properly obtained and/or prescribed?

A-Rod ended up looking sympathetic, if that is at all possible.
Yeah, I'm hearing the same thing on talk radio today. Still don't care. The Red Sox don't get to do that to the uniform, no matter who is wearing it.
I can't wait for the rest of the league to start plunking him. Now we find out which pitchers are mad and which are using.

I'm ok with that. Just not the Red Sox. If some Indians middle reliever wants to throw at him, fine by me. Justin Verlander? Go right ahead. Not the Red Sox.

Congress stuck their nose in this when they didn't need to. Steriods were legal for a good 50 years and are actually beneficial to a person when used properly. Instead of banning them, proper education on the correct usage would have

They should all use telephone poles for bats too ala Bugs Bunny.

Anyone who thinks steroids should be legal in baseball is just an idiot. People will be hitting 75-85 home runs a year. Every guy int he majors will now NEED to be on them. Then, that bleeds into the minors. High schools will be close behind. Good luck telling 15 year-olds with a dream of playing pro baseball that they should use steroids when they know it's the only chance they have.

Yet we love the NFL and all the stuff those guys take that bleeds down to college and high school. The NFL vs. MLB hypocrisy that we suffer in the arenas of drugs/PED's and competative balance/parity are obscene. Yet we do it all the time and no one seems to give it a second thought.

NFL started combating roids before the government had to threaten them, and did not base its resurgence on two of the most obvious juicers in history

MLB and the MLBPA have no one to blame but themselves for steroids being such a big deal in their sport

no league is gonna be completely clean, but you have to try
