ROUND 3

1 (65). San Francisco 49ers - CJ Moseley - DT - Missouri

2 (66) St. Louis Rams (from Miami) - Craphonso Thorpe - WR - Florida St

3 (67) Cleveland Browns - Mike Patterson - DT - USC

I'm not sold on any of the QBs left on the board, and I'm sure one of them that I'd take a chance on would be there in the 4th. Gave major consideration to Jamaal Brimmer - S - UNLV, but with Jones being healthy the Browns have to see what they used a 2nd round pick on last year. They also have decent depth at this position, although I could care less if Griffith and Little were cut.

Mike can go as high as the late first round or fall all the way out of the 3rd IMO. The issue, of course, is his size for a DT. Mike is listed at 6'0 and approx 290lbs (and I've even seen him listed at 6'1), but he measured in at the Senior Bowl a shade under 6'0. This is not very attractive for a DT. The Browns chose him here due to the fact that he does not have to be the every down lineman right away that other teams may want him for, its not like they will be a Super Bowl contender. A rotation consisting of Gerard Small Penny Warren, Orpheus Roye, Alvin McKinley, and Patterson would work for the near future. He could be used exclusively on 3rd downs early on to cause havoc up the middle using his great quickness, allowing Lang, Ekuban, and Courtney Brown (if he's not cut) to get around the ends easier. Hopefully, Patterson can be developed into a disruptive DT that can play all downs (nicknamed "Baby Sapp"). I can see him stunting while the larger DT takes up two lineman (which Warren does alot) allowing Patterson to blaze into the backfield. He will need to add a little weight/strength without losing his quickness that have made him a productive playmaker at USC. Patterson's value is still to be determined, but for the sake of this draft I think this is a quality pick for the Browns.

4 (68) Tennessee Titans - Andrew Walter - QB- Arizona St.

With not much value at DL, I feel like Floyd Reese will start to look to the future and go with a QB. At best case, this next year will be Mcnair's last or he still might retire. I took Walter from ASU here as he is without a doubt a good prospect who has slipped way too far because of an injury. The Titans don't need him to play immmediately anyway. They will groom this prospect with prototypical size and a cannon arm to be ready to take over in 2006 or even 2007. Volek is a pretty good QB and is serviceable in the meantime. I considered Orton here, but am still not convinced than he is not a system QB.

5 (69) Oakland Raiders - Ronald Bartell - CB - Howard

6 (70) Miami Dolphins (from Chicago) - Jeremy Parquet - OT - Southern Miss

This could be somewhat of a reach, but Parquet's stock has already started rising at the Senior Bowl practices and I believe it will continue to rise up until draft-day. Parquet will provide solid competition for Damion McIntosh at the LT spot immediately.

From NFL Draft Countdown:

Strengths: Excellent size and a massive frame...Good athleticism and nimble feet...Has long arms which aid him as a pass blocker...Powerful and does a solid job as a run blocker...Smart player who graduated in 3 1/2 years...A team leader and captain.

Weaknesses: Not as strong as you would like and needs to hit the weight room...Doesn't always play up to his physical ability...Inconsistent...Will improve in the running game as he gets stronger.

Notes: Prospect who has a rare blend of size and athleticism...Has a lot of potential as well as the drive to succeed and improve...May have the potential to play left tackle in the NFL.

A little motivation from Saban and Houck should help with Parquet's listed weaknesses (inconsistency, hitting the weight room).

7 (71) Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Marcus Johnson - OG - Ole Miss

Was all set to take Mike Patterson here and the Brownies took care of that. Two rounds in a row....really like the Browns picks.

Well, I'm not going to play Mel Kiper Jr. and act like I've studied this guy or plagiarize a magazine as if it's my own thoughts. Never noticed this guy when I have seen the random play or two from the last couple years of an Ole Miss game. Can't speak to his technique, intangibles, or anything else but I like what has been written about him and where he seems to be ranked.

While the Bucs could use some additional pieces at DL and LB, the OL has proven to be among the most inconsistent groups on the team and could use help. I like the idea of a guy this size, who is listed in most rankings as the #2-3 ranked guard and projected to go in the top 2 rounds, being available to the Bucs in Rd 3.

8 (72) Detroit Lions- Jason Campbell- QB- Aururn

Close call, but I think the Lions will take a QB on the first day and they're not sold on Joey as the franchise QB to lead them into the future. Campbell's size, athleticism and overall potential translate to him being a great value with more upside and potential impact than most players left on the board.

I took a close look at several other players including OT Logan Mankins, S James Butler, LB Robert McCune, C/G Chris Spencer and QB Kyle Orton.

I think the Lions can pass on a S, OG/C or LB at this point and still get a good player with similar talent in the 4th or 5th round. I didn't feel that comfortable with the fall off behind Orton and Campbell. Campbell or Orton both represent good value in the 3rd round and Campbell's upside is just too hard to ignore.

With the way the draft would shape up in this mock, the Lions would likely be looking to shore up their OL next and probably looking to grab a S, CB and LB/DE/DT. In other words, defense. They could also add a starting safety via free agency. They've tried that a few times in recent years with little success.

Campbell more than replaces Mike McMahon and he is a potential long-term solution as a backup/starter giving the Lions a potentially effective exit strategy if Harrington flounders in 2004.

9 (73) Houston Texans(Dallas) - Marion Barber III -RB -Minnesota

This pick is a best available player pick which adds to the depth at RB for the Texans. Barber is a strong hard runner with decent size and average speed. he split time at Minnesota and will be expected to overtake Johnathon Wells and Tony Hollings neither of whom have done anything special as reserves to DomDAvis. Barber has some history returning kicks which would be of help if he could unseat the popular but averge-at-best JJ Moses. With to picks close together i would think that one of these picks would be candidates for a trade down in the real draft.

10 (74) Washington Redskins-FRED GIBSON- WR -GEORGIA

Skins need a speedy, big wideout who can stretch the field, and this guys got that exact potential.

11 (75) New York Giants -James Butler-S-Georgia Tech

Gibril Wilson was a find from last year's draft, but Shaun Williams is a lage cap hit and could be cut, Brent Alexander is a stop-gap, Terry Cousin is not a safety. The Giants need to develop another safety, and the chance to draft a talent like Butler is too good to pass up in round 3. Butler is big (6' 3" 210), has solid speed for his size (4.55), has reputation for being an intelligent hard worker, and has been excellent in both run stopping and pass coverage. His only drawback is that he's a bit raw in technique, but a coachable player like Butler should rally break out after a few years of coaching to fill in the gaps in his understanding of his position.

I would expect Butler and Wilson to end up being the Giants safety tandem for a long time to come if he fell to them, but he won't. Butler won't make it out of the 2nd round.

12 (76) Arizona Cardinals - Evan Mathis- OG-

They go OL in order to make some improvement in their protection. They've tried to go this route before and were almost always unsuccessful with it; hopefully not this time.

13(77) Philadelphia Eagles(KC) - JJ Arrington- RB- CAL

14 (78) Houston Texans -Michael Boley LB Southern Missisippi

Boley is an athletic, instinctive Lb. The biggest concern for him is his size, but he showed up at the senior bowl at 230. boley needs to improve on his pass coverage, but makes plays and is around the ball. foreman is mediocore and Sharper enters the last year of his contract in 2005. Boley will get at least one year to add some weight and get stronger before making a serious run at starting.

Possibilities with this and the previous pick could have been either OL or NT, but IMO, all of the prospecta remaining at those position would have been reaches at this point in the draft.

15 (79) Carolina Panthers -JR Russell- WR- Louisville

Hmmmnnn... Barber and Arrington are gone, the player I really want for them is probably a 4th rounder, they may or may not bring back Muhammy. I can see them going a lot of ways with this pick, I guess I will give my best effort at BPA.

This will be a hedge against Muhammed leaving. If he stays I don't see them addressing WR in the draft but if he goes they will need to groom some players behind Steve Smith and Keary Colbert.

16 (80) Minnesota Vikings- Ted Nugent- K- Ohio St.

17 (81) St. Louis Rams

18 (82) New Orleans Saints

19 (83) Cincinnati Bengals

20 (84) Baltimore Ravens

21 (85) Jacksonville Jaguars

22 (86) Seattle Seahawks

23 (87) Buffalo Bills

24 (88) New York Jets

25 (89) Green Bay Packers

26 (90) Denver Broncos - forfeited pick

27 (91) Atlanta Falcons

28 (92) Tampa Bay Buccaneers(SD)

29 (93) Indianapolis Colts

30 (94) Philadelphia Eagles

31 (95) New England Patriots

32 (96) Pittsburgh Steelers

ROUND 1

1 San Francisco- Aaron Rodgers- QB from Cal

Nolan has a very tough few months ahead coming into this situation and having to help with the draft decision. The 49ers will be trying very hard to trade down in this draft, but it is unlikey based on the value that lies in the mid 1st round. If De'Brick had declared i believe that they would consider going OT with this pick, but without him there simply isnt top pick talent at the position. That being said the 49ers have no choice but to try to get that oft-unattainable "Franchise Quarterback". The fact that he is a local boy is intiguing for marketing reasons as well.

2 Miami 4-12 - Derrick Johnson- LB = Texas

Johnson is the best athlete in the draft this year hands down.

I don't believe you pass up on a talent like that unless you are close to a Super Bowl team and clearly only have one specific hole to fill.

RB looks like it will be filled through trade or FA right now. I look for a FA C to be brought in as well [possibly Detroit's Dominic Raiola]. LT and CB will be a high priority in the 3rd round.

3 Cleveland 4-12 - Antrel Rolle- CB- Miami

Looks like a classic Butch Davis pick here, taking a guy from the old stomping grounds. But I went back and forth between a few players that I will not mention, finally deciding on Rolle. With alot of holes to fill on the Browns (QB, OL, CB, and WR imo), this one seems like a no brainer. Top CB of the draft, has the speed and skill to be a solid shutdown type NFL corner. The Browns may run into issues signing Henry and keeping Daylon happy, so this is the move to make. Ferguson would have been my pick here if he came out and was on the board. Why did I not go QB in this draft....I do not know what will happen with Garcia and if I took one here he won't be starting anyways, I'd be content with McCown for another year and get the solid corner now.

4 Chicago 5-11 - Braylon Edwards- WR- Michigan

Faster than Mike Williams and acclimated to playing in cold weather, THIS is the clear pick for the Chicago Bears. After all.... you can never have enough first round Michigan Wolverine WRs on your roster. The kid is a playmaker! Mike Williams has had a year off of football too....and the fact that USC didn't miss a beat without him should tell you something... it's the system, not the WRs...

If OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson came out for the '05 Draft, he would have been the pick here. Alex Barron does NOT warrant a #4 pick, and it does not seem as though this Mock Draft will be laden with trades, so I elected to draft 'the best available player'. However.... had OLB Derrick Johnson been available, I would have selected him, giving the Bears a dominant defense for the next decade.

5 Tampa Bay 5-11- Mike Williams - WR- USC

I would only want them to take one of two players: 1) Williams or 2) Derrick Johnson. The two best athletes in the draft and IMO the two with the most upside and "sure" thing written all over them. Sure, the Bucs could use a RB but don't see any that I would take this high. Alex Smith sure would be tempting here but there are many other needs to address. Pairing Williams and Clayton at the WR could make them lethal for years to come. I hope the Bears actually do go with Braylon but I suspect that would be unlikely because of the colossal bust that David Terrel has been.

6 Tennessee 5-11 - Alex Barron- OT- Florida St.

Knowing Jeff Fisher he would have loved to take a defensive player with this first pick. However, with Derrick Johnson and Antrel Rolle off the board I think he turns his head to the offensive line where we will be losing one of our starting tackles( probably F. Miller) as a salary cap casualty. As many have mentioned, with Kevin Carter more than likely gone, DL is a need as well. However, there is much depth on the DL in this years draft. There is however only really one or maybe two stud OT tackles in the draft this year. Alex Barron is the easy choice.

7 Oakland 5-11 - Cedric Benson- RB- Texas

He has all of the physical tools to be a stud at the next level. Great size, runs with power, and still manages to be very elusive. Al Davis normally doesn't go with a RB this early, but Benson would be a difference maker for years to come. By getting Grove and Gallery in last year's draft, the Raiders have a chance here to put together an incredible running game for the future. If Jerry Porter does indeed leave and Mike Williams or Braylon Edwards are available, I could see the Raiders going with one of these two wideouts and then going after a RB in free agency. But, with the way the picks have fallen so far, I can easily see them going in this direction.

8 Arizona 6-10 - Ronnie Brown- RB- Auburn

He solves their problem at RB, and they address QB through Free Agancy.

9 Washington 6-10 - Dan Cody- DE- Oklahoma

If the Skins keep Smoot and Pierce, adding a pass rusher like Cody could be just what they need to become the most dominant defense in the league. Cody goes all out on every play. Extremely intense competitor, just seems like the type of guy Gibbs/Williams would love to coach.

10 Detroit 6-10 - Heath Miller- TE- UVA

With the 10th pick in the first round the Detroit Lions select TE Heath Miller of the Virginia Cavaliers. The Lions could easily go in one of about four or five directions. While safety is a priority and a concern, drafting a safety this high is almost always not a great value and there is no Sean Taylor in this year's talent pool. Thomas Davis is a nice talent, but he might be better off at LB where the Lions are well stocked with youth, production and potential.

The Lions have needs at DE, TE and could also use a top-rated tackle for the offensive line where they could move Stockar McDougle inside to guard. Alex Barron would've been a nice selection but he's long gone.

I do believe the Lions will look to trade down out of this spot and get more picks or value in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Other areas of need include CB and DT where they have decent players already, but could stand to add a high impact rookie to groom and eventually take over. Dan Wilkenson may not have more than a couple years left, if that many, and Fernando Bryant is nothing more than an average corner making a bit too much money given his production in '04. Granted, he was hurt, but the Lions need to upgrade their corners and/or improve their pass rush to have a better chance of shutting down their opponents.

When it comes right down to it, I think TE Heath Miller is the best fit in terms of value for this pick and potential impact that would help the Lions offense soar and take this unit to the next level. As for other players targeted I like both Dan Cody and David Pollack for DEs, but I'm not as sold on Erasmus Jones yet and wouldn't be comfortable taking either him or Pollack at 10. Cody was gone. I'd have no issues trading down a few/several spots to get either one. Impact DEs are hard to find and extremely pricey to secure via free agency. Drafting one in the first round makes good sense from a cap stand point. Since we couldn't trade down, however, I think we can get Miller here and still come back in the 2nd and 3rd to grab a good safety or corner like Carlos Rogers (personal favorite).

It came down to Miller or Erasmus Jones/David Pollack. It would make the most sense to get a DE, but not at this spot (10th). Trade down, get Pollack. Select Alex Smith or Kevin Everett in the 2nd/3rd or target C/G David Baas to solidify the OL and leave McDougle at RT.

Certainly, Lions fans expect defense defense defense after spending all of our recent #1 picks on offense - OL, OL, OL, QB, WR, WR, RB... well add TE to it as well.

11 Dallas 6-10 -Shawne Merriman - Maryland- DL/LB

I think considering the way the draft was going the Cowboys would look to trade down in a hurry here letting some people up to get a look at the skill players on the board. Shawne has been hyped a bit on The Ticket by Norm much in the same way Kiper hypes him up. It isn't a secret that Parcells wants to alternate between the 4-3 and 3-4 and this could be the floating front 7 guy they need. In addition he has the size and quickness to match his versatility.

I think if they could have traded down and picked up a late 1st and late 2nd though here they would have done it in a second because of the lack of a 3rd round pick.

12 San Diego - Erasmus James- DE- Wisconsin

I was really torn on this pick, I love M. Spears and Pollack from UGA but James has more talent and who knows one of those guys could still be there at 28. Neither of the elite WR was available or Alex Barron. The biggest need area for the Chargers is WR/OL and then the best defensive player available. Jamal Williams is a true stud in the middle, Igor is on the other side I think E.James steps right in and starts for Cesair on the other end. SD's 3-4 was very good at stopping the run last year and hopefully with Jamal taking double team, E.James can help them generate a pass rush to help out the young DB's.

13 Houston 7-9 - "Pacman" Jones- CB- West Virgina

In the last two drafts the Texans have went BPA at the top of the draft getting two of the most dynamic young players, Andre Johnson and Dunta Robinson, in the NFL. The tradition continues as the team refuses to reach for more pressing needs as there is not an OL or DLman really worth the 13th spot in the draft. Marcus Spears, Shaun Cody, Travis Johnson are possibilities on the DL, but really I don't think any OLman is even close here. The BPA who would be the next selection is Cadillac Williams, but while he is effective running inside the Texans want a true change of pace to Dom Davis which means a big physical back.

As for Jones he is very similair to Robinsosn, a fast slightly undersized CB who is a willing tackler in space. By getting Jones, the Texans should be able to play a more aggressive style of defense with corner blitzes and more man coverage. This should help the team get more pressure on the QB which is the biggest weakness on the defensive side of the ball.

14 Carolina 7-9 - Thomas Davis - FS - Georgia

I think the Panthers have the fortune this year of having some of their needs probably being close to the best player available. From what I hear they were really hurt by losing FS Deon Grant to the Jags and Collin Branch (former 5th rounder) never really became a player in the backfield. For all I know they may address this in free agency but this pick seems to make sense, Mike Minter say hello to your new running mate. They may be tempted by Cadillac here to shore up the backfield and they have never been shy about trading picks so I could see them moving down here. Taking someone like Elton Brown or Travis Johnson would also be a possiblity.

15 Kansas City 7-9 - Travis Johnson- DT - FSU

The Cheifs are heartbroken about the Panthers snagging Davis. It's obvoius that the Cheifs need to fix the Defense. There is a huge need at every level of the D. The cheifs are going to select DT Travis Johnson FSU. He gives us a quick athletic almost 300 lber that will bring pressure from the DT spot. The Cheifs expect him to bring what Cornelius Griffin brought to the Redskins this year. Most likely will replace Lional Dalton in the starting lineup and team him with Ryan Sims (who needs to improve). There were obvious other needs like LB (love to have Johnson fall here) S (none worth drafting at this spot besides Davis) and WR (but D comes first this year)

16 New Orleans 8-8 - Alex Smith- QB- Utah

My general strategy for the Saints is to target OL, LB, DB, & look for value at QB & TE. Even though QB wasn't a target position, I couldn't pass up Smith at 16. I'm one of those people who feel Aaron Brooks will never lead New Orleans to the promised land. They should start grooming somebody ASAP, IMO. That said, Brooks does give them a capable "transition" QB if they decide not to start the rookie right away.

Smith is 6'4" 212, very accurate, & has the arm to make all the throws. He's also highly intelligent, a good leader, & has excellent mobility. I'd be willing to bet he'll go no later than the 3rd overall pick. I also considered OT Jammal Brown, OG Elton Brown, & several CBs.

17 Cincinnati 8-8 - Anttaj Hawthorne- DT -Wisconsin

I really think the Bengals trade out of this spot. Last year Lewis traded the 17th pick and ended up with Deltha O’Neil, Chris Perry, Stacy Andrews, and Robert Geathers. I believe the Bengals most pressing needs are DT, SS, C, DE, and hopefully RB. DT is definitely the biggest need. Cincinnati was 26th in stopping the run. The only reason they weren't 32nd is because they got to play the Dolphins and Philly's 8th string. CMart(196) JLewis(186) Staley(123) Green(115) Droughns(110) Brown(147) Bettis(129) CTaylor(139) Barber(109) Some big numbers.

Hawthorne finished his senior season with 42 tackles – 11.5 for a loss – 6 sacks. He is one of the best at plugging up the line and often hits the ball carrier in the backfield. 6'3 312 lbs.. big, athletic and explosive... something the bengals need desperately.

18 Minnesota 8-8 - Shaun Cody- DT- USC

Minnesota picks Shaun Cody based on a possible move to a 3-4 defense. This would make Cody a great pick here. Plus, with the loss of Hovan on the DLine, the DLine has some holes and this pick seems like a no brainer. Pollack was considered as the other option here. Vikings should move Kevin Williams back to DE. He and Udeze will wreck havoc in the pass D next year, while Cody and Johnson will clog the middle to stuff the run.

19 St. Louis 8-8 - Channing Crowder- LB- Florida

Strengths: Has been extremely productive since day one of his true freshman year...Great athlete...Very good size and speed...Tough and physical...Aggressive...Active and makes plays all over the field...Has excellent instincts...Solid tackler...Has not yet reached his full potential.

Weaknesses: Durability might be a concern because he has had a couple of knee injuries and then suffered torn ligaments in his right foot as a sophomore...Has only played major college football for two seasons so lack of experience may be a concern...Needs to get stronger...May have some character concerns.

20 Dallas (from Buffalo*) 9-7 - Carlos Rodgers -CB -Auburn

I was set to take Rodgers if he fell here. Dallas primary offseason need is D and depth at CB is a major problem. No strong safties as such exist at this point so getting a cover corner opposite Newman will help immensely. I'm pretty pleased with this pick considering I think alot of teams behind Dallas have CB needs as well. In addition adding depth at CB can help Newmann shift to a PR/KR role with less injury downside risk freeing up more spots in the front 7 to rotate with (A major problem last year in 4Q).

21 Jacksonville 9-7 - Troy Williamson- WR- South Carolina

Most mocks have the Jaguars going DE here. Studio and Showcase: Tuck. Wright: Pollack. GBN: Roth. last free Huddle mock: Cody (Kiper differs, going with Barron presumably to replace Pearson at LT.) The theory is that the Jaguars have trouble rushing the passer and that they need a good DE to complement Stroud-Henderson. A DE is definitely a position to target on draft day or through FA, but it should be noted that the Jaguars still rated #8 against the pass according to FootballOutsiders' numbers, which are adjusted for context and strength-of-schedule. Meanwhile...

the Jaguars can't ####### score. 2004: 261 points, 29th in the league. 2003: 276 points, 25th in the league. Sure, they've been breaking in young players like Leftwich the last 2 years and Williams last year. But they also are probably lacking in talent on offense. The OL is merely OK and the offense is almost completely reliant on Taylor. Even assuming Williams develops next year and proves to merit his draft slot, it may only compensate for Smith's inevitable decline (Smith's closest comps according to Drinen's similarity scores not only decline but crash and disappear by the time they are as old as Smith will be in 05). And if something should happen to Taylor...Over the last 2 years, his backups have averaged 3.4 ypc to his 4.6. Frank Coyle's recent mock had Benson going to the Jags, a pick sharks (probably correctly) derided, but it's mostly notable because Coyle ranked Jones higher than just about every other draft expert last year. Is this oversight, or is there is more to Jones' lackluster numbers than lack of opportunity?

Cadillac would be a great value pick here but since I can't see him actually being around at 21 in the real draft, I hesitate to pull the trigger and skew the Jags portion of the mock. Instead, since the Jaguars have suggested they fired Musgrave in part because they want to go vertical, and since they have pretty much zero WR talent after Smith and Williams to go with their longballing franchise QB, my pick is:

22 Baltimore 9-7 - Mark Clayton -WR- Oklahoma

With the Jaguars surprise pick of Williamson, it makes my desicion easier. I think Clayton can be the do-everything playmaker the Ravens lack in the WR corps. He has a varying skill set that can help Boller develop.

23 Seattle- 9-7 - Cadillac Williams- RB- Auburn

With Seattle showing no signs of resigning shaun alexander and maurice morris not emerging as the heir to the feature back position, cadillac is just too good to pass up here. he projects as a better than average feature RB with the possibility of being a true stud with his vision, cutting ability, speed, and toughness, and is a no brainer and HUGE value at pick #23. LB, WR, and OL present more pressing needs, but the value here is clearly cadillac, who should be able to step in and keep seattle's running game at the same level with no problems.

24 Green Bay 10-6 - David Pollack -DE -Georgia.

The Packers need to shore up a defense that had a hard time stopping opposing offenses once again in 2004. Going to start on the defensive line by drafting David Pollack, the 2005 Lombardi and Bednarik award winner. He'll lineup opposite of KGB and provide the hustle and hard work the Packers desperately need. Also considered Marcus Spears here but went with the safe pick. Pollack probably won't match his college production but should be a solid player for many years because of his work ethic and toughness.

25 Denver 10-6 - Marcus Spears- DE- Louisiana State

I know he is considered raw in terms of experience and even some call him unmotivated in terms of his effort sometimes. Well, he's a converted TE and is still learning the position. But that bodes well for his potential also, as he is physcially gifted and just needs more experience at this position.

There were a lot of tempting CBs at this pick too. Considering what Manning did to the secondary in that playoff game, it might have been a good idea to go that route. However, I take a view similar to Bill Parcells --- CBs are marginalized by the new chuck rule. That does not mean you can have crappy ones, and one in particular was tempting with this pick. But the first palce to start when attacking a QB like Manning is pass rush. Just look what NE did to him last weekend.

Also, I was discussing this pick with a friend and he noted that Denver actually lost their games last year against the better running teams in the league. This despite finishing in the top 10 in both rushing and passing defense (yards). The games they won were largely against margin or sub-par rushing teams. So this led us to the belief that we needed the better run-stopping DE of the group of Pollack-Spears-Roth. Spears fits that mold better than the other two given his bigger size. Another point I noticed is that Spears fits the mold of Trevor Pryce somewhat --- a bigger guy with speed than can likely play any spot on the DL in a 4-3 setup. Several have said that Spears is more suited to a 3-4 given his size, but he also has enough speed to play DE in a 4-3 scheme. The emergence of Reggie Hayward this season means that Pryce (who has epxerience in the NFL at DT at various times) and Spears can shift along the line and give the Broncos more flexibility.

In terms of TE, Miller was the only one who warranted first round consideration. And even if he were here at this pick, I am not sure I would have picked him. Granted, Denver's offense in years past has functioned somewhat better with a pass-catching TE. But Plummer still threw for 4,000+ yards this season. That signals to me that this offense is capable of running with Putzier and the current TEs. Plug in a (hopefully healthy) Tatum Bell and the speed factor on offense rises dramatically. The hope is that this will open up some space for the current TEs and allow the offense to compensate for not ahving a "Shannon Sharpe" in the middle of the field.

Finally, the fact that Denver does not have a 3rd round pick also played into this pick. Instead of stocking up on quantity in rounds 2-3-4, we will likely need to stay with quality, and this pick accomplishes that objective. The only other position I truly considered was CB and hoepfully this pick helps the current CBs on the roster with a better pass rush enough to justify the pick.

26 New York Jets 10-6 Jamaal Brown- OT- OKlahoma

Right now the Jets biggest Needs are: CB, TE and S. Like most teams the Jets real needs won't be clearly defined till they decide what to do with Free Agency. Key decisions are Abraham, Mckenzie, Jordan and Jason Ferguson..... They probably won't get all of them and whatever position they don't keep will rush to near the top of the need chart... Sounds like Abraham will stay. The others I don't know but, Mckenzie seems most likely to go, I forget his agent's name but, it's the worst one - the one that screwed Arrington. (Poston Bros???)

So overall the needs look to Be CB, TE, S, RB/backup and possibly DT and/or OT.

The DT's, TE, and S we targeted are gone..... Plenty of CB's to drool over but, Edwards, a former secondary coach seems to think he can develop them as long as the front 7 is stout. I know the gallery is screaming for a CB - Jets been ignoring them for years. Justin Miller???? Marlin Jackson????? Sheesh....

If the Draft turns out like this and Mckenzie leaves I think the Jets draft:

JAMMAL BROWN OT Oklahoma

27 Atlanta 11-5 - Brodney Pool -FS- Oklahoma

With Jammal Brown off the board, considering an O-Lineman for the Falcons at this juncture would seem to be a bit of a reach. Jammal Brown would have been good value at #27 (and is at #26) but I'm not sure if any other OL prospect other than Elton Brown is a worthy selection here. And quite frankly, the Falcons problems on the O-line are at the OT position in pass protection, not OG where Elton brown resides. But even if Jammal Brown were on the board, he wouldn't be a slam dunk. The Falcons O-Line progressed this year and became a dominating presence in the run game and another off-season to gel in the WCO and Alex Gibbs based running attack might be what the doctor ordered. Plus, I see the Falcons making a modest FA investment rather than a rookie to push the envelope here.

So with QB, TE and RB positions pretty much set and the verdict on Michael Jenkins (last years 1st rounder) still in TBD status, the attention turns to defense. Under Ed Donatell, the Falcons D-Line made huge strides and became a force. And the option to acquire more depth, especially at DE is enticing especially with UGA legend David Pollack still on the board along with Matt Roth. But with the D-Line becoming the strength of their defensive unit in 2004, the Falcons will pass on augmenting this position...leaving the LB and the secondary.

With the progress of Demorrio Williams, he most likely will find himself starting in 2005 and Kevin Burnett would fit the style of LB the Falcons covet. With Matt Stewart a possible FA casualty...a selection of Burnett would not be a bad move. However, the Falcons feel they need to upgrade the playmaking potential in the secondary to capitalize on the pressure they can put on the QB with their front four. In two seasons with the Falcons, starting FS Cory Hall has only 1 INT.

By going with Pool they get a a guy who can provide a prescence up front. Pool demonstrated solid play-making abilities at Oklahoma although his sophomore season was a better showcase for him in this area. But based on how slowly the Falcons brought Michael Jenkins along in 2004, they most likely would have Pool be their obvious passing down FS while continuing to start Hall and work Pool into the rotation during the course of the 2005 season giving him the chance to claim the starting job in 2006.

28 San Diego 12-4 -Marlin Jackson -CB/S - Michigan.

Now many might disagree with this pick but Marlin has played alot of saftey in college as well as CB. The Chargers biggest need on Defense is to improve pass rush and pass coverage. With E.James in the First and now Jackson in the second. OL/LB and even more secondary help can be addressed later in the draft and Free Agency. I was really hoping Spears or J.Brown would drop, but oh well.

29 Indianapolis 12-4- Justin Miller -CB - Clemson

"Justin Miller is the proverbial big play waiting to happen and is a dangerous threat both in coverage as well as on special teams as a return man. With good size, very good speed, excellent athleticism as well as a nose for the ball, Miller would be an ideal fit for the Colts and finally give them the top young cornerback they have been searching for" -NFL Draft Countdown player review

Miller wins out over Burnett at OLB for the Colts round one selection after the Bengals selected Hawthorne, this was the next guy on our board (projected of course)

30 Pittsburgh 15-1- Adam Terry- OT - Syracuse

Terry is a behemoth at 6' 9" and 325 pounds. His frame can easily carry more weight and I believe he'll play around 335-340. Pittsburgh doesn't have a ton of glaring needs right now (if Burress walks - a big WR like Chris Henry might be a pick here.) I was focusing on either an OT, CB, or DE with this pick, and I believe Terry provides the best value. His footwork stands to improve a bit, and he lacks polish, but this is a pure upside pick this late in Round 1. The Steelers drafted Max Starks in the third round last year, who is another space eater, but there are questions about whether or not he has enough quickness to handle speed rushers on the outside. Oliver Ross performed adequately at RT this year, particularly in run blocking, and with Starks there, the Steelers have time to coach Terry and let him develop. At this point, I believe he has the most upside of any player available. The engine that drives the Steelers offense is the line - with the addition of Terry and the (hopeful) return of Kendall Simmons, the Steelers would have terrific depth at perhaps their most important aspect of the team.

31 Philadelphia 13-3 -Justin Tuck - DE -Notre Dame

As I see it, Phi areas of most need going into the 2005 draft are DT, OL, DE, and RB, in that order. We do have other needs, but with repsect to finding 1st round talent, those are the holes that should be filled first. Also, while I would love to find some T talent here that can be moved around the OL while we wait on some of the older folks to move on, Im not sure I am going to find any at this point. I do expect the Eagles to trade up just like last season and move into the 11-17 range to secure a DT.

I dont think any knowledgable Eagle fan expects to see DT Corey Simon return this year and while he has shown flashes, we (the Birds) dont give huge money for underperforming players who could be something. Our organization secures youth and harnesses their talent to mold them into an abover average player that excells in our system.

That said, I think Andy Reid has learned from his mistakes a bit in the past and has gone out and signed big name FAs (Owens Kearse). I think given the opportunity in the first round, maybe a good deal offered by some franchise that needs the help in the draft, to trade up and land a big time offensive player. Chances are it wont happen, but I could see it happening as Phi just has too many picks and cant afford to sign them all.

I have 3-4 players I would love to have at this spot. While there is a DT that I like on the board, I do have a couple of other positions that can be secured that may end up producing pro-bowl calibur players. Also, I believe there will be some DTs overlooked that I do have my eye on later in the draft. While this pick may not be considered a positional need, I do feel that Tuck is a player that cannot be passed on. Current measurables are 6'5 264 while running a 4.7 he excelled at ND and will be considered an asset on the Eagles Defensive line depth. I would not call Kearse old, nor would I say Derrick Burgess, Hugh Douglas, and Jerome McDougle need to be replaced. But I will say a potent pass rush will win a lot of games for teams.

32 New England- ERNEST SHAZOR- S- MichiganWith NEEDS of OG, OT, DB, LB the team still decides to go with the best player available. With Rodney Harrsion ending a brillant career the PATS take another multi-purpose player. At 6-4 Shazor is a Saftey in the body of Linebakcer. This will allow Ernest to learn on the job for a year. He might even get some extra work with Eugene Wilson playing corner during the year when the PATS want to play a stronger nickle back versus throwing teams. With a DB heavy draft I still think the PATS will draft a DB but with someone that fits the mold of a Belichick player like Ernest it's very hard to pass him up. There were two other players the PATS liked here but they felt they will be able to fill those spots later in the draft.

ROUND 2

1 (33) San Francisco 49ers - Brandon Browner - CB -Oregon State

The 49ers need a big play-making CB and Browner fits the bill at 6-4, 202, and a sub-4.5 40. He's a big, physical CB who can matchup with any WR, but in terms of experience he's still very raw. However, the 49ers will be have growing pains with their rookie QB Rodgers so they are able to give Browner a year or two to adjust to the NFL.

2 (34) Cleveland Browns- Elton Brown- OG -Virginia

I'm absolutely torn by this pick. Seeing how the draft has fallen, I could have taken Barron at #3 and then Webster at this pick. But, I cannot go back in time just as the Browns will not be able to. My three choices came down to W. Britt, E. Brown, and C. Frye. All tempting picks, but we all know the Browns need to improve the offensive line. I decided on Brown over Britt because there are some tackles that can be had later on. If the Browns keep Verba and Tucker at tackle then we can get by. Alot will ride on Verba's pending legal issues. I have a feeling if the Offensive line is addressed in FA, Frye will be the Browns pick here if on the board. Brown is 6'6, 338lbs, and runs a 5.05.

Scouting report:

Strengths: Great size and a huge frame...Excellent mobility for a man his size...Team leader and captain...Good strength and power...A downright dominator at times and a monster in the running game...Has been a starter since his true freshman season...Still has a lot of upside and keeps getting better.

Weaknesses: Doesn't always play up to his potential...Lacks consistency and won't be able to get away with giving less than maximum effort in the pros...Has had some small, nagging injuries throughout his career...Can still improve in pass protection...Technique needs work.

3 (35) Philadelphia Eagles (from Miami)- Rian "Goo" Wallace- LB - Temple

I actually considered a number of players here. While I really wanted to take Chris Henry, who will make something of himself, Chris is too much of a head case and I dont wish that on the Phi organization. FredEx will be gone and everyone knows Pinkston is still a poormans #2, Henry could have added more of a depth threat to the Eagles WR core.

Instead, I chose ... a different head case , Rian Wallace. While he was suspended for punching another teammate in the head, Wallace is a prime canidate to be taken in by the strong leadership felt on this defense. All Eagles fans know Mark Sim is not an answer except coming off the bench, Wallace will add speed and "popping power" to a LB core that needs to get to the ball sooner.

Wallace is a declared Junior who will go day 1. I probably took Wallace 10 picks before he should go, in addition, he may have been available with my 2nd 2nd round pick, I didnt want to wait on him.

4 (36) Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Ciatrick Fason - RB- Florida

With all of Pittman's fumbles this year and Garner battling his back off the shelf it's time for some fresh blood. Fason has the size, speed, and pass catching ability to possibly be a stud in the NFL. I see him as having tremendous upside and we be a great value pick in the 2nd. Adding Mike Williams and Fason with the first two picks along with Michael Clayton from last years draft would give the Bucs the weapons to become a very potent offense into the future.

Was very tempted to go with a couple of good defensive players that I like who are still on the board and also would have considered Morency if Fason was gone.

I would love to see the Bucs go in this direction with their first two picks and load up the lines the rest of the way.....but I suspect that a couple of picks will be dealt for veterans (possibly a Rod Gardner or Travis Henry). I hope they don't go in that direction unless it would cost them very little.

5 (37) Tennessee Titans - Cory Webster- CB- LSUWith their Second Round pick the Titans will either look to go CB or DL. As everyone knows with FLoyd Reese and Jeff Fisher they always pick for value over need. At this point in time there is one player who stands out above the rest as being a steal at this pick. He is an extremely talented athlete who has only been playing defense for two years as he is a converted WR. Based on natural tools and measurables this is a guy who could have been considered in the mid 1st round, but becasue he lacks expereince will slip a bit. With rumors that Andre Dyson could be a casualty for the Titans this is a great pick here.

Football's Future says: Cory Webster emerged as arguably the top corner in college football last year. In just his second season on defense after moving over from wide receiver, Webster displayed big play ability on a consistent basis for the Tigers. He racked up various awards, including All American status from different publications after picking off 7 passes, with an amazing 25 pass break ups. His two year totals at corner are great 4 year numbers for many, having 14 INT’s and 42 pass break ups.

Webster possesses great all around skills for a cornerback. He has very good size, allowing him to match up with some of the bigger wideouts he may face. He plays even bigger, as he is one of the more physical corners in college football. What makes him such a high rated prospect is that along with that size and strength, he is an excellent athlete and has the speed to keep up with most receivers he comes across. He has a great nose for the ball, and is always around the action. He makes a lot of plays on the ball, either knocking it away or picking it off, and in the run game, he is very active.

6 (38) Oakland Raiders - Kevin Burnett- LB- Tennessee

Burnett has all the physical tools to be a stud at the next level. Can get after the QB in blitz packages and defends the pass very well. Incredible overall athletic ability but he needs to show that he has completely recovered from the knee injury that he suffered in 2002. I think the Raiders will take a chance here in order to bolster their pathetic defensive front 7.

7 (39) Chicago Bears - Wesley Britt- OT- Alabama

With their pick in the 2nd round, the Bears select Alabama's behemoth 6'7" 315 lb OT Wesley Britt. The kid has greet height, but needs to add some bulk to his frame. He will battle it out with Marc Colombo for the offensive right tackle spot, with John Tait swapping over to start at left tackle. He's proven to be a road grader in college, but needs to work on his pass protection. With Braylon Edwards and Wesley Britt, the Bears have filled two need positions.

8 (40) New Orleans Saints- David Baas- G -MichiganI wanted Burnett. If allowed, I would try to trade down. Since we can't, the Saints could use a G & this kid is generally regarded as the best OL from Michigan since Steve Hutchinson. Has a lot of experience and comes from a program known for producing good linemen. Quick, competitive, and can be downright nasty at times. He's also strong, smart, & a tireless worker who always gives 100%. Displays great technique, as well.

9 (41) Detroit Lions - Matt Roth- DE- Iowa

I thought David Baas would be here for this pick, but low and behold he's not. Having gone TE in the first round the Lions would likely focus on DE, S, OG and possibly even QB. After looking over all the players left on the board, I have to be perfectly honest. If I were the Lions GM I'd think long and hard about taking Charlie Frye here. Granted, in this exercise we're not trading to better positions our team's needs, get extra picks or move up for specific players like the do in the real deal. I doubt I would've stayed put in rnd1 and taken Miller, rather moving down slightly and still getting the DE I want, then coming back here and looking at TE Alex Smith, G David Baas or move up in the 2nd a bit to try and grab a Shazor, Rogers, Browner type..

I think if the Lions took Frye it would position their team very well for the future offensively. Stating the obvious. Harrington is not locked in as the team's heir apparent (to who?) at QB. Hardly. They could sign a veteran to push Joey, possibly start this year or for a couple years.. and bring in Frye to be the 3rd QB and groom him for the future. Even if Joey develops you can trade one for a decent pick in a year or two. That would be called a CYA pick for Mooch. Doubt it will happen, but at least for myself.. it's something to think about - long and hard.

Frye has all the physical talent to be a solid NFL QB and he's more mobile than Joey. He's played for a couple years behind a horrible offensive line and still produced high comp. %s and produced good numbers. In Detroit he could eventually take over an offense that could rank among the NFL's very best potentially (especially in this mock getting Miller to boot).

Then, like a cold November Sunday after another Lions loss, I sobered up realizing full well they need to and probably will stay on target with a defensive minded pick at DE, S, DT, CB the focus (in that order). The choices boil down to DE Matt Roth, DE/T Chris Canty and a host of safeties (Nicolson, Bullocks, Atogwe, Fuller).. and Darryl Blackstock is very intriguing as well.

Blackstock is a great pass rusher, but an OLB.. it wouldn't be a total shock if the Lions went this route. They have the players to be flexible like the patriots/raiders schemes. A little 3-4 and 4-3 hybrid.. Blackstock is a perfect fit at OLB/DE as a rusher. Rogers, Wilkinson, Redding can all play 3-4 ends, Rogers or Wilkinson at NT. Blackstock and Bailey on the outside with Lehman and Holmes inside. Alex Lewis and James Davis are solid reserves, too.

So my pick is Matt Roth: Iowa. High motor guy. Former LB, Millen-type who doesn't have elite skills, but a non-stop, high effort player with solid results. He could be a strong against the run and capable as a pass rusher. Not the sexiest pick, and I would pray they move around to get better value rather than settle here for Roth.. or at least have the ballz to take Frye. But Roth is the final answer.

10 (42) Dallas Cowboys - Roddy White -WR -UAB

Roddy has the speed and YPC numbers the Cowboys are looking for here. The over the middle stuff is wrapped up by Meeshawn and Witten. The guy is showing somewhere in the high 4.3s for speed and will look to impress in Senior Bowl practices this week. I would seriously doubt he would be here in the second round because of all the hype around him.

There are concerns now that the OL will get shaken up and they will need to burn an OL pick here. But given the run on the holes in the OL it is unlikely that they would let this type of WR go by here.

11 (43) NY Giants-2.11 Lance Mitchell ILB, Oklahoma

My assessment of the Giants is that the LB corps is their largest weakness. Nick Greisen, Kevin Lewis, Carlos Emmons, the bust signing of Barrett Green... I see no playmakers in that group.

Why Mitchell? Before his knee injury, he was a complete beast at Oklahoma, and would have easily been a first rounder. The knee is a question, he certainly wasnt the player this year that he was before the injury, but ACLs take two years to come back from, and we are in the 2nd round - every player has some question or another. Mitchell was the leader of a GREAT defense at oklahoma, and i see a real lack of leaders on that D now that strahan is in the twilight of his career. He makes plays all over the field, loves the physical side of the game, and has the imposing physical presence you want in a 4-3 MLB.

The Giants need a guy that their D can rally around, a real impact player, and i believe Mitchell is the just the man for that, he'll bring an element that their LB corps severely lacked this season. Regardles of where Mitchell goes, i think he'll be a complete steal for whoever gets him. He could easily be as good as Derrick Johnson or Channing Crowder if he comes totally back from his knee injury.

12 (44) Arizona Cardinals- Fabian Washington -CB

Maybe a little early for him to be going, but if Webster doesn't fall (which he might), the Cards should be happy with Washington, and need a playmaker in their secondary to complement the playmakers up front.

13 (45) Carolina Panthers - Khalif Barnes OT Washington

This is an effort to shore up their offensive line in order to play the kind of game John Fox wants to play - run first. I'm not sure where Barnes will fit in '05, he may earn a starting RT spot but at least he will provide depth with his athleticism.

14 (46) Kansas City Chiefs - Donte Nicholson- S -Oklahoma

He is a big, fast, tough playmaker who is stout against the run. He finishes tackles rarely ever lets a runner get away. There are several option here but the Cheifs got torched against the run this year, so stopping the run will be a priority this offseason for the Cheifs. Nicholson is average against the pass but has the athletic ability to improve. The cheifs al;so looked at some of the LB's left on the board but most of what's left were pass rushers.

15 (47) Houston Texans- Chris Canty DE Virginia

Canty was a possible first round pick until injury took him out for most of the year. Canty is a massive 6'7" 295 DE who has experience in the 3-4. The Texans need youth and depth along the DL. With Walker and smith playing the ends Canty will not be rushed, but if he shows that his knee is sound and the ability to hold the point of attack, he could force himself unto the field in 2005.

16 (48) Cincinnati Bengals - Ben Wilkerson - C - LSU - 6'4 298

The Bengals could go in a couple different directions here. I thought about Alex Smith, he has terrific hand and runs great routes but might not be fast enough, and Schobel and Stewart are still pretty young. They could go DE but I don't see a DE left that grades this high. SS would have been another way to go but with Nicholson being taken off the board 2 picks earlier, it made my choice easier.

Fontenot and Braham are both free agents and old. I think the Bengals will bring Braham back with a one year contract and give Wilkerson a year to get stronger. Wilkerson is the best center and one of the most overall complete players in this draft. He has all the intangibles, intelligent making all the calls at the line and never being confused on who his man is. He is superb in pass protection and a decent run blocker but needs to get stronger. Started since his true freshman year and would probably be ready to step in and start right away. But a year being groomed behind Braham and hitting the weights will have him ready to be a stud in his second season.

17 (49) Minnesota Vikings - OLB Darryl Blackstock - Virginia

18 (50) St. Louis Rams - Michael Munoz- OT- Tennessee

19 (51) Green Bay Packers ( from NO)- Odell Thurman- LB- Georgia

After taking care of our #1 need by drafting DE Pollack in the 1st round, we move to the next position of need which is LB and see another Georgia Bulldog available. Packers select Odell Thurman LB Georgia. He'll play inside linebacker and allow Nick Barnett to move to the outside where he played at Oregon St. This move will also get Navies off the field. Thurman will bring a lot of toughness to the position and is a good tackler.

20 (52) Jacksonville Jaguars - DeMarcus Ware- DE/OLB -Troy.

He may be a bit of a reach here, but his stock is rising. The Jaguars had trouble rushing the passer last year and Ware looks like the best one available here. It may be that Ware is more ideally suited for a 3-4 than the 4-3 the Jaguars run, but I don't think they will have any problems using him for pass rush. He should be a huge upgrade in that capacity even if he's something less than an everydown player. I also considered here: Morency (best player available theory), Marcus Johnson, McFadden and Perkins.

21 (53) Baltimore Ravens - Antonio Perkins - CB -Oklahoma.With physical CB's being less effective in the NFL now I chose Perkins over Va Tech's Jimmy Williams, who could be great but is more physical and still new to the CB position. Perkins can play well in space and has great makeup speed which helps because he does occasionally gamble. His punt return skills could keep him around the NFL for a long time as well as his athleticsism. Although he is thin, 6' 185, an NFL weight program should allow him to fill out.

22 (54) Seattle Seahawks - Barrett Rudd- LB- Nebraska

Consensus selection from FBG. The Rams need some OL help and to get younger on the OL. Turley is a question mark and Pace isn't getting younger, although still a top tackle. They passed up Jamal Brown in the first round, so this makes sense in the second.

23 (55) Buffalo Bills - Alex Smith - TE- Stanford

Very easy choice, but I'd be surprised if he lasts this long on draft day. The Bills TE corps was decimated by injuries late last season, making this perhaps the most glaring need on the team (pending the status of LT Jonas Jenning and DT Pat Williams in FA). Smith provides great value here, and I didn't think the talent available at LT or DT was worthy of this pick.

Smith is an NFL-ready TE who should be able to contribute right away. He had a huge senior season for the Cardinal, catching 52 passes for 706 yards and 3 TDs. He's got great size at 6'5", 255lbs, and is a very good athlete that should be able to make plenty of plays in the short passing game. He doesn't have elite speed for a TE, but he's quick enough that he should pose matchup problems for most LBs, and his size and jumping ability will make him a valuable weapon in the red zone. Like most TEs entering the league, blocking is not his strong suit, but he's got a frame that should allow him to add some weight without sacrificing too much quickness, and he's a very coachable player and hard worker who should be able to learn quickly.

He's got NFL bloodlines as his father played DE for the Broncos back in the 70s. He also has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, which could help him to quickly improve his blocking technique once he gets to the pros. While in high school, in addition to being one of the top TE recruits in the country, he was also a star basketball player, and competed in both the 400m and high jump events for the track team.

The Bills are already loaded on defense. This pick adds to what is looking like an extremely promising young core of skill position players on offense: QB JP Losman, RB Willis McGahee, WR Lee Evans, TE Alex Smith.

24 (56) Denver Broncos - Eric Green- CB- Virginia Tech

Denver needs defense more than offense at this point, as Indy proved in the playoffs. Also, following New England's template for winning the SB, we will continue to draft defense. This decision came down to a difficult choice of Michael Boley or Green. I went with Green because Terry Pierce provides enough coverage at OLB to team with starters DJ Williams and Spragan. Plus the need to replace the ineffective play across from Bailey is more pressing right now.

25 (57) New York Jets - Bryant McFadden - CB - Florida St

Drooling as TE Alex Smith fell, it didn't quite work out - Antonio Perkins was also on the radar as was Green.... Saw some reports that questioned Green's attitude though - any insight on that? Knowing how Herm and the Jets are looking for "Good Guys" and FOOTBALL PLAYERS - I'm not so sure about the reports about him as well as Marlin Jackson.

26 (58) Green Bay Packers - Charlie Frye - QB - Akron

The Packers have taken care of their two most pressing needs with their first two picks of this draft, DE and LB. While the defense still needs secondary help, were going to draft a QB here, selecting Charlie Frye, Akron Zips. He'll have a year or two to sit and learn before taking over for the retired Brett Favre. Frye has all the physical tools and is an excellent leader. His bio reads like a description of Brett Favre minus the cannon arm but with much better speed. Great value here.

27 (59) Atlanta Falcons - Luis Castillo - DT - Northwestern

With the probable retirement of the yeoman like Ed Jasper, the Falcons are faced again with having to replenish their D-Line. While Chad Lavalais will more than likely step into Jasper's strating role, the key for the Falcons is to keep their defensive front as fresh as possible as they are undersized. Castillo can provide depth in Year 1 and has some very intriguing raw tools with which to work. His athletism, strength and smarts should serve him well in Atlanta.

28 (60) Indianapolis Colts - Vernand Morency - RB - Oklahoma St

Given the depth of the RB pool this year and the impending turnover in Indy at the position we felt it was a great opportunity to pick up a underrated player in Morency. While we still need help on the O-Line and more talent on the defensive side we feel that this years draft would provide us with "talent" as oppossed to needs.

Justin Miller in the 1st we thought was a steal and with Morency who we had rated as a late first early second rounder we have accomplished our goals thus far. This now gives the Colts the security to let any of the RB's go to free up space for some defensive help and hopefully they can do a sign and trade with Edge if he is unable to come to terms on a long term deal.

29 (61) San Diego Chargers - Reggie Brown - WR - Georgia

First, after adding solid defensive players in the first round, I really wanted to address the O-line with this pick, but Barnes, Britt and Baas were all gone.

My next hope was that Blackstock, Burnett or Wallace would fall and then we could address the linebacking core, which while solid last year, is rather an older veteran group.

That leaves us with WR, now everyone on this board feels they need to address this position in the draft and very well could. I've seen mocks with them taking Roddy White and/or Roscoe Parrish in the late second. I gotta admit Henry from WVU could have been a better pick but, Reggie Brown has excellent size and speed and blocking ability, he's been turning heads at Senior Bowl practice. Overall, Brown adds depth and is not really needed to step in and play right away and has time to develop.

30 (62) Pittsburgh Steelers - Eric Shelton - RB - Louisville

6'3" 250 + breakaway speed (!) Tons of upside as he split time with some other great backs at louisville. The Steelers running game is going to lose Bettis any day now, and Staley is no long term solution. Shelton is a perfect fit to our running game, and has the physical abilities to be as good as any RB in this draft. The possibilities of the steelers maintaining their domination in the power running game with him carrying the rock are too good to pass up. Kay Jay Harris and Cedric Houston were also considerations here. Need is at CB and DE, but the value at those positions sucks right now, and the value at RB and WR is excellent. Fred Gibson was also considered at WR.

Was looking at Canty, Green, Morency, Alex Smith, and Perkins here but all were snapped up recently. This was a toss-up between Shelton and Chris Henry of West Virginia. I can't believe a p

Hey grid, remember this hollatyaboy buy is missing in action ever since he signed up so we need to make a consensus pick for the 49ers. What do you think?I see them going either DL, OL, or CB.

Maybe munoz or Britt if they go OT, or maybe go with value and take Webster or browner at cb. Webster is really the only consensus late 1st round grade player left on the board.

My vote is for Brandon Browner - OSU ducks 6'4" DB
I concur.Their secondary sucks.... and they've got a DEFENSIVE minded Head Coach.Great Blue North has him ranked as the 11th best overall.... so he'd be quite a value here.

I'm waiting to see who pulls the trigger on Ciatrick Fason. He's going to be a huge value for whoever gets him.

Browner sounds good as he was up there for me as well. I was kind of hoping yall wouldn'y say him as my titans need a corner in 4 picks. LOL. Grid or jgb do you want to write the explanation as I don't know much about these players that play out west other than that he is rated wellthx

 on Browner. He could easily go 10 spots earlier in the real draft.

If that's official with Browner I'm ready to go in a minute..Official?

Just a casual observer, but with the depth at CB in this draft, one would think the 49ers would definitely be lookingto nab one of the 1st RD CBs who managed to slide...

any of you cstu, bloom, grid , or jgb who wants to do the write-up on the pick just volunteer. Its seems to be a consensus. i don't feel qualified to do the write up on him though.

Re: the 49ers from here on out take the best available player regardless of position. This will coincide with what Nolan said there strategy will be this year. Tom

With Browner gone...the 34th pick in the draft, the Cleveland Browns select,Elton Brown, OG, VirginiaI'm absolutely torn by this pick. I have a feeling if the Offensive line is addressed in FA, Frye will be the Browns pick here if on the board.Brown is 6'6, 338lbs, and runs a 5.05. Scouting report:Strengths: Great size and a huge frame...Excellent mobility for a man his size...Team leader and captain...Good strength and power...A downright dominator at times and a monster in the running game...Has been a starter since his true freshman season...Still has a lot of upside and keeps getting better. Weaknesses: Doesn't always play up to his potential...Lacks consistency and won't be able to get away with giving less than maximum effort in the pros...Has had some small, nagging injuries throughout his career...Can still improve in pass protection...Technique needs work.

Round 2 so far:33(1). San Francisco 49ers - Brandon Browner - CB - Oregon State34(2). Cleveland Browns - Elton Brown - OG - VirginiaPhilly on the clock. JAA has been PMed.

33 San Francisco- Brandon Browner - CB from Oregon State

The 49ers need a big play-making CB and Browner fits the bill at 6-4, 202, and a sub-4.5 40. He's a big, physical CB who can matchup with any WR, but in terms of experience he's still very raw. However, the 49ers will be have growing pains with their rookie QB Rodgers so they are able to give Browner a year or two to adjust to the NFL.

I was hoping he would slip, it leaves me 2 options.

35(3). Philadelphia Eagles (from Miami)- Rian "Goo" Wallace LB, Temple

Instead, I chose ... a different head case ;) , Rian Wallace.

Over Kevin Burnett? Just wondering if there was a reason why you liked Wallace better.

In all honesty, I dont have a good reason. Though when I see a player playing for a truely ####ty team who shines, and then a player who players for a great team and shines, I tend to think the players on the sucky team brings more to the table. It will come down to how much Rian wants it. Temple being a home town favorite should also help.

Well, was all prepped to pick Elton Brown with this pick but he's gone so time to add a playmaka.RB Ciatrick Fason, FloridaWith all of Pittman's fumbles this year and Garner battling his back off the shelf it's time for some fresh blood. Was very tempted to go with a couple of good defensive players that I like who are still on the board and also would have considered Morency if Fason was gone.I would love to see the Bucs go in this direction with their first two picks and load up the lines the rest of the way.....but I suspect that a couple of picks will be dealt for veterans (possibly a Rod Gardner or Travis Henry). I hope they don't go in that direction unless it would cost them very little.

Good pick  I've been pimping Fason for awhile now and think he's going to be a great NFL RB - maybe the best in the class. My feeling right now is that Philly or TB will draft him in April. He should grade out well at the combine and make it hard for either one to pass on him.

Friegin Brownies got my guy....
Still some good guards out there.
Screw that noise... not good enough for the top of Round Two.It's not like any of them have knocked up Lovie Smith's kin.
Britt? Baas?
Britt is a tackle, no? He needs to get in the weight room, he's 6'8 but only 300lbs. I'd say Bass has 2nd round potential, anytime you got a mammouth lineman coming out of Michigan there needs to be consideration. Besides those two, there really is not much else out there at T/G in this round. Maybe one or two others, tops.

I've got two guys I'd like to draft, who should I PM them to, as I'll be gone the bulk of today...
If you have the summary ready I will be checking in throughout the day and would be happy to help you out.

OK, I PM'd three proxy picks to pgreenfan, so my absence shouldn't impact slowing this Mock Draft down. The Bears are therefore done, as they have no 3rd rounder this year. They got DE Adawale Ogunleye instead. I'll take that... I'd prefer him healthy next year though....

sorry for the delay, my internet was jacked this morning.

With their Second Round pick the Titans will either look to go CB or DL. As everyone knows with FLoyd Reese and Jeff Fisher they always pick for value over need. At this point in time there is one player who stands out above the rest as being a steal at this pick. That player is :

Corey Webster -CB- LSU.

Football's Future says:

Cory Webster emerged as arguably the top corner in college football last year.

He makes a lot of plays on the ball, either knocking it away or picking it off, and in the run game, he is very active.

a couple of items for discussion:adam terry could have been a good choice for the chargers, since their OTs have trouble with good pass rushers. was this something you considered before taking jackson?why rian wallace over burnett or blackstock?

*** Chicago Bears Second Round Pick *** ORT Wesley BrittJohn Tait would be shifted to OLT this offseason, and Britt will battle Marc Colombo for the starting job.I am sure Grid will add to this later but wanted to get the pick in for him. Thanks

I'm not that sold on Adam Terry and the OL was servicable this year. They need pass defense more than OL right now and Marlin Jackson (or Browner) would improve the defense a lot. There are also some good OL prospects that will slide to the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

I wasn't real sure about the OL prospects in this draft except fro J.Brown and A.Barron. I really think in the NFL unless the guy is a stud it's hard to predict how good an OL rookie will play. I think the Chargers need better pass rush and pass denfense more, hopefully they can add some OL depth later in the draft or thru free agency. I stand by my jackson pick as he can probably start at saftey or nickel back for the team this year. He played both at michigan. Not Sure if Terry can come in and make an impact the way Jackson will. Went with the best player at a need position.

Thanks for taking care of my pick while I was gone pgreenfan! It was tough to pass up on OLB Kevin Burnett, as he would have been an AWESOME addition to fil the Bears lone week spot on defense, their OLB position beside Urlacher and Lance Briggs. But the Bears could acquire Tommy Polley in free agency, as he played (and flourished) under Lovie Smith in St. Louis.

Very happy to help, just seems like the mock is off track today so didn't make much of a difference.

No big deal, it's not run anally enough... Everybody should be given a 3-4 hour window of opportunity to make their selection. It's not like there's any rush though....

ltaylor,I PMed you my pick for the Raiders.
This Oakland pick was never made before Chicago went. LT, can you let us know who was PM'd to you? If it was Britt, Chicago will have to pick again.I think we are on hold with the Saints pick until Radballs or LT provide that PM.

Wow my fault, and apoligies to everyone involved. Especially Grid if it turns out to cost him the player he wanted.

It will get worked out. No biggie, just a lull now in the draft.
