2006 Tampa Bay Bucs thread (1 Viewer)

so we lost out on Ashworth and Beasley today, hopefully the Woodson thing is at least true.
PRJF just posted this As you know from looking at the other thread on this board regarding Charles Woodson, I called Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune and asked him about the report. McDonald denied having reported that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had agreed to terms with the Oakland Raiders' free agent cornerback. It was easy to determine that someone had simply made up the report and attributed it to Jerry McDonald while passing it off like a KFFL.com-type report.

I want to be clear when I say that what McDonald told me was completely true. He did not file the report that's made its way around the message boards today.

However, after doing some more digging, and I mean really deep digging, it turns out that this story has taken an interesting turn. Hate to keep you hanging, but a story of interest will be posted on the front page of www.PewterReport.com within the next hour.

Stay tuned.

*UPDATE* he posted it

Despite the fact that Tampa Bay has starting cornerbacks Ronde Barber and Brian Kelly, and nickel CB Juran Bolden under contract for the 2006 season, the Buccaneers still are interested in acquiring free agent cornerbacks.

PewterReport.com is reporting that Oakland Raiders free agent cornerback Charles Woodson is scheduled to fly to Tampa Thursday night and will meet with Tampa Bay officials at One Buccaneer Place on Friday.

A 1998 first-round draft pick out of Michigan, Woodson recorded 383 tackles, 17 interceptions, two touchdowns and 66 passes defensed during his eight-year career with Oakland.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Woodson is considered a versatile defensive back and can play both cornerback and safety.

With Barber, Kelly and Bolden under contract, the Bucs could be interested in signing Woodson to compete with Will Allen at free safety, where Woodson has spent some time playing during the latter part of his career.

Woodson has struggled with injuries over the past several seasons. He played in just six games last season before being placed on injured reserve with a broken leg.

I don't see the genius in signing Woodson. Don't need him.

As for the line, LT-RG are all taken care of, other than Jeb Terry and Mahan competing for RG. They're going to need to find a RT though, whether it be in the draft, Colmer (:shudder:) or a FA.

As of today, Chris Colmer is the starter there. That's going to have to change.

True cb is not one of our top priorities, but if we can get him cheap it could be a bargain. We have also been fortunate that BK and Ronde have been healthy. Another positive would be leverge in dealin with Ronde and BK's contracts knowing we have another good guy in the secondary.

I really believe Jeb Terry has that job. He'd have won it last year had he not been injured in training camp. And there were probably rumblings through the year that Terry would have been a better RG than Mahan, but for two reasons he was not in the lineup: 1) Mahan needed the year of tutilege under John Wade, and 2) Muir wanted, for once, to have five linemen start all 16 games.I think Terry is a better RG and is the future at the position, and he needn't be held back another year. I'm very interested in the center battle, either Wade or Mahan. I think that will be the battle to watch in training camp at One Buc, that or LDE or SLB. Would really like to see White and Cooper pull those two out.

From Pewter Report message boards:

The Woodson meeting went great. BA, JG, and Chuck (what they call him) had a wonderful lunch at Island Way Grill. BA ordered the shrimp pasta, JG went with the snapper, and Chuck had the surf and turf (The Buc's treat). After that they went to back to 1 Buc and showed Chuck the Lombardi Trophey JG won against Oakland. They ended their meeting with a walk around the construction site of the ne facilities. Before dropping Chuck off at TIA, they made him a conservative offer that him and the Potsons will keep in mind while visiting other teams.

Walker re-signs with Buccaneers

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Free-agent offensive tackle Kenyatta Walker re-signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Friday.

The five-year veteran -- all with the Bucs -- has appeared in 72 games with 70 starts. In 2005, he was part of an offensive line that started all 16 games together for the first time in club history.

"Kenyatta started every game last year and helped us make the playoffs," coach Jon Gruden said. "We made great strides on offense last season and it was our goal to keep everyone on board so that we could continue that improvement."

:X Well, I guess the devil you know is better than the devil you don't.

Guess the Bucs will go into next year with 21/22 of their starters from last year back. Just wish it was 20.

btw, real surprised at that. Guess he was the best option after Ashworth left the market.

Dislike it as you might, re-signing Walker really was the best option for the Bucs. And I told ya so ;) .

I can't believe what an awesome offseason the Bucs are having.

QB - Simms

RB - Williams

3DB - Pittman

FB - Alstott

WR1 - Clayton

WR2 - Galloway

WR3 - Hilliard

TE1 - Becht

TE2 - Smith

LT - Davis

LG - Buenning

C - Wade/Mahan

RG - Terry

RT - Walker

LDE - White

NT - Hovan

UT - McFarland

RDE - Rice

SLB - Nece/Cooper/Ruud?

MLB - Quarles/Ruud?

WLB - Brooks

RC - Barber

SS - Phillips

FS - Allen

LC - Kelly

NB - Bolden

I like it. I like it a lot.... that's a young championship team there. 2006 will see greater strides, and I think 2007 will bring home another Lombardi.

FMI, did anyone else know that 5 guys starting all 16 games was a club first? I never knew that.... I knew it had been before my football lifetime if it happened, but I just supposed that it did.

Still a great accomplishment either way. At the least, we'll have 4 of 5 starters returning, supposing either Terry beats out Mahan, or Mahan beats out Wade.

Not that they would, but I wonder what Wade's trade value is? He's one of the more reliable centers in the league.... think they could manage a 6th for him?

The best option signed in Seattle yesterday. He was the best option after the best option.
I was speaking in terms of efficiency, not talent. Ashworth is better, but his price tag wouldn't make him worth it. Walker came much cheaper.Would you rather pay $50 for a great steak or $12 for a pretty good steak....

:lmao: :lmao: I can just imagine how pissed you were in those games against Carolina where it seemed like Kenyata got a penalty every other play :D I will admit, I have had my share of Yatta  But, he does know the system, and last year was his best year yet. I still wouldn't mind seeing some competition for him, but he is better than nothing.

Yea, I can't wait to see Abraham and Peppers just destroy this guy 4 times a year.Oh well. Better than Colmer I guess. :(

Why would they do that? You need all the experienced reliable lineman you can get, even in reserve. A 6th is useless.I imagine it'll be Mahan v Wade for the center spot, and Terry v Fonoti for the RG.

Davis, Buenning and Walker are all settled in.

Even though I don't like Walker, it is somewhat comforting knowing Colmer won't be starting, or a rookie. They don't even have to focus on OL in the first few rounds now.

Hopefully Davis improves his pass protection.

I don't think we go OL first unless Winston Justice falls to us. Someone made a good post on PR about how he could fall to us, explaining team by team why he could fall. The only team that could nab him before us would be Miami. http://www.pewterreport.com/Forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=18582

If he is not there, I highly doubt we will go Marcus Mcneil. I am personally for getting younger on D. I would be happy with anyone from FSU, especially Bunkly. He was a friend of mine bac in Tally. Cromardie could be an option especially if we don't land Woodson.

If we don't go OL, I think we could go with Marcedes Lewis or one of the top WR's depending on how well Gruden thinks Clayton is going to come back. I would give away our 2nd or third to get Vernon Davis

This draft I honestly wouldn't mind trading down. We don't have any 1 particular need, and we could use some young guys to learn behind our vets.

I think Gruden may like McNeil more than Justice, especially with the connection to Caddy. Plus, isn't Justice a RT where McNeil is a LT? This alone likely puts McNeil ahead of Justice on our board.

Not to be nit-picky, but why can't you spell your friend's name correctly? It's Bunkley. Also, the guy you quoted doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.

Buffalo, Detroit, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Miami, San Diego, and New England all have a need at OT.

That's 7 teams that could very well jump on him, not 1. Big difference between 1 and 7.

Half of his quips are baseless assumptions, and some of them are just wrong. Take a look at New England. Obviously this kid didn't watch the draft last year.

Honestly, I'd be hard-pressed to see him fall past Philadelphia. Just because they re-signed a Tackle who is on the verge of collapse and have a left tackle in Tra Thomas who is already in decline doesn't mean they won't draft. Justice would be a great pick for them, especially if Bunkley (whom they are also heavily targeting) is gone before them. OT is a big need for the Eagles.

I think Gruden may like McNeil more than Justice, especially with the connection to Caddy. Plus, isn't Justice a RT where McNeil is a LT? This alone likely puts McNeil ahead of Justice on our board.
This is completely overblown. One is independent of the other. Yes they saw a lot of big blocks from this guy, but they aren't drafting him at No.23. He's too big to play WST for the Bucs, despite what his 40 time would indicate. He's a best fit in Arizona, Baltimore, Green Bay or Pittsburgh, teams with huge OLs that don't demand as much from their tackles. Yes he was a LT in college, but he's likely going to play the right side in the pros. Justice, by contrast, is built to play the left side.Just because McNeill is a LT versus Justice being a RT in college doesn't have anything to do with how they are on the Bucs' draft board. Why would it? The key is talent. Justice is a far superior talent to McNeill, and a much more solid bet at holding the weak side. That he played the right side in college and has the ability to dominate the weakside makes him an absolutely perfect fit for the Bucs.

At that, the re-signing of Walker is a pretty good indication that he's going to start next year. While he's not a fan favorite anymore, Walker gets the job done, and spending a 1st round pick on a rookie OT that is more likely than Walker to struggle is simply a bad idea. This team is in position to play at a championship level for the next 3 seasons. Why draft an OT that is probably going to struggle for at least two of them?

Also, please spell names correctly.

Marcus McNeill

Antonio Cromartie

Brodrick Bunkley

I know it's trivial to some people, but spelling is a credibility issue. If you want your opinions to be valid, you have to be able to spell names correctly. Regardless of how good your statements are, if you can't spell his name, it makes you look like you don't know what you are talking about.

Quez, I like the idea of them going after another TE, but they just really don't need one. Alex Smith is developing into a playmaker and Becht is arguably the best blocking TE in the league.

I am still (after these three offseason months) sold on them drafting Sinorice Moss at No.23. If he's gone, I could see them pouncing on Thomas Howard who is probably the most apt of this LB class to takeover for Derrick Brooks, and is versatile enough to hold down the SLB spot for the next few years.

But OT in the first is just not the best choice for the Bucs, all things considered.

I haven't been to that site in at least two years.

They really don't need to go OL in this draft. It's not necessary. They obviously have enough faith in Walker to re-sign him and Davis was good enough last year that you can give him another season and see if he can improve his pass-blocking enough to be a capable starter.

They can go LB or WR and get some depth.

I can't believe you are so arrogant that you'd completely dismiss my ideas because I left an 'l' off McNeill's name. Let me ask you this, when was the last time we successfully moved a right tackle to left or vice versa? Kenyatta was a right tackle at Florida and was a natural fit at left tackle due to his incredible athletic ability, footwork ect etc. He was putrid on the left side and finally settled down into a solid if unspectacular NFL player when moved back to his natural right tackle position. Todd Steussie was a left tackle brought in to play on the right side, he was equally putrid as Yatta in an unnatural position, but when moved to the left side as a backup last year performed seemingly well when called upon.

Now, as for McNeill, you stated that he was too big to be our weak side OT. Guess what? We are a left handed team. The strong side of our line is the left side, we run to the left far more than the right and we happen to have a QB that is left handed so he looks towards the left side of the line.

I know it's trivial to some people, but it's a credibility issue. If you want your opinions to be valid, you have to be able to know right from left. Regardless of how good your statements are, if you can't tell me which side of the line is the strong side for a left-handed team, it makes you look like you don't know what you are talking about.

Most of us come here for casual discussion, and are not training for law school such as yourself. I am not trying to build intelligent arguments, simply putting in my :2cents: 75% of the time I spell something wrong I realize it may be incorrect. Quite frankly, it isn't worth my time to remember how to spell every exact word and name right, or go back and look it up. I could care less how credible it makes me look to a bunch of people I don't know. Besides, voice recognizition has been vastly improving over recent years. So, in a few years accurate spelling will be as useless as latin.

I love it! Nationally televised game as a reward for doing well last year. Hopefully we'll get some Monday nighters too.

:excited: Could this be the year the Buc's bust out the throw back orange :excited:
Not as long as Derrick Brooks and Mike Alstott are on the team. I think all of the pre-97 players need to be gone before the Bucs even consider going to the throwback.

2 things:

1) I believe a more likely Secondary Uni would be Pewter. Gruden has been pushing for it and the Glazers are adamant about not using the Creamsicle again. However, the Glazers did give in a little on the orange when they saw sales declining, so we'll see.

2) Rumors of Woodson signing are getting louder:

http://www.tbo.com/sports/bucs/MGBBA6UKBLE.html

"He is expected to visit the Packers this week but the scuttlebutt around the NFL is that he eventually will sign with the Bucs."

My friend sends me a text this morning, around 6:20 am.

"We're going to sign Woodson."

Me: "Wow, it's done?"

Him: "No, just my opinion."

Me: :hot:

Gruden, on his afternoon agenda at the NFL owners meetings: "I'm going to play nine holes of golf and see if I can win some money so I can put it toward our salary cap."
:lmao: I am now of the opinion that Woodson would end up being a very good signing. Gives you depth at safety and corner, which is something they are lacking a little. Major, MAJOR upgrade over Dexter Jackson.

I agree. And along with a young guy I think will be a player in Will Allen, will give Monte a lot of "toys" to play with.

Gruden said he will use him as a "football player", probably meaning CB, FS, and even a WR occasionally.

Can you imagine this guy blitzing. I was good friends with Monte's son Chris, and had the honor in watching one of Chris's games with Monte. Monte is a freaking mad scientist, the dude chicken scratches plays on napkins and crap during games he is watching. I am willing to bet the guy already has blitzes designed for C-Dub.

I wonder if we will see more of the cover 3 with C-Dub?

Will Allen and Phillips in on obvious running downs?

Q restructured. And according to the St. Pete Times we are $10 mil under the cap :pickle: :headbang:

Sounds like we are getting ready to make a big move

Of that $10M, we need what about $7M for the pending rookie contracts?
Pewter Report speculates we need $5M for rookies, so we can feasibly stretch the remaining $5M for 2-3 FAs (Pearson, Woodson?)

Doesn't seem like we'd sign Woodson. We need to replace Phillips, not Allen.Wonder what the room is for? I've been hermitized from this law test I had today.

I can't imagine they would sign Woodson, but I certainly wouldn't  .

Who is on the trading block that the Bucs might be targeting?

There has to be some reason that the Bucs would be so interested in Charles Woodson.

There's a chance the Bucs may just be clearing cap room for a target move in 2007. Maybe a big contract for Simms.

They may move Will Allen to SS, and have C-Dub play FS. Then Jermain Phillips can come in on obvious running plays.

Charles Woodson apparently cancelled his visit with the Packers.

McCarthy saying the situation has "changed" and had no further comment.

http://www.buccaneers.com/news/newsdetail.aspx?newsid=5066

"The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed offensive tackle Torrin Tucker, a restricted free agent, to an offer sheet.

Tucker, who has played for the Dallas Cowboys the past three seasons, became a restricted free agent on March 11. He was thus free to negotiate a contract with any team but the Cowboys retained a right-of-first-refusal by extending a tender offer to Tucker at the beginning of free agency. As such, Dallas has up to one week to determine whether or not they will match the Buccaneers’ offer and retain Tucker at the terms outlined in the contract he signed on Thursday.

The 6-6, 315-pound Tucker has started 24 games for the Cowboys, including 10 last season at left tackle. In 2004, he started 13 games at right tackle."

Winborn came cheap:

Tampa Bay signed the speedy linebacker Monday to a two-year contract worth approximately $1.6 million, with a $200,000 signing bonus. Winborn, who turns 27 next month, has the right to opt out of the deal in 2007.

A second-round pick in 2001, Winborn was limited to only 19 starts in San Francisco because of chronic injuries. When rookie coach Mike Nolan installed a 3-4 alignment last year, Winborn struggled and lost his starting job to converted defensive end Andre Carter.Jacksonville obtained Winborn for a seventh-round pick on Oct. 7, but he failed to start for the Jaguars and was placed on injured reserve Nov. 29 after hurting his knee.

"We felt that it fell into a great situation being able to get a guy that is a good player, that is a Buccaneer-style of a linebacker," said Bucs linebackers coach Joe Barry. "He is athletic, he can change directions and he can run."

Seems like it's down to Tampa and GB for Woodson, and there doesn't seem to be much mutual interest between the Pack and Charles.

So what the hell is the holdup?
