Apparently Pittman restructured today. Saved the Bucs some cash.

Top priority of re-signing Simms is already done, coaching staff has been filled, so the off-season is off to a nice start.

Find a way to keep Brooks.

Re-sign Kenyatta or find another OT.
Find another wideout that can stretch the field (Sinorice Moss?)

A-Train coming back?
Find some defensive line depth. That's really all I can think of needs-wise. All systems are go for 2006.

*edited/numbered for clarity1) Walker WILL stay this year. It's a foregone conclusion that he is staying. He has a base salary of $670k this year, and is in a contract year, so he'll be playing for a fat contract. The Bucs couldn't find a better deal if they searched all of free agency. First Round pick playing for peanuts that's an average starter at worst with four years of system experience and potentially a pro bowler (doubt that though) at best if he can reach his full potential.

2) Sinorice Moss! I really like them to add a speedy understudy to Galloway before he starts to noticably decline. That player, whomever it is (cough Moss cough), would ideally play No.3 early on. Larry Brackins should move up to No.4 if he's progressing the way he should be. I still see him as a project that will take at least one, maybe two more seasons before we start seeing what he is really capable of. I really don't see him breaking out until his 4th or 5th season though, so we may need to sign a WR4 as well. Ideally, our WR3 will be a return specialist, so that we don't need to keep Mark Jones on the roster.

3) I believe he will be back, but I think he might be released. If he is brought back, it will be at a lot less than he's scheduled to make now.

1996 131000.00

1997 596875.00

1998 650000.00

1999 1100000.00

2000 2000000.00

2001 2400000.00

2002 600000.00

2003 1100000.00

2004 660000.00

2005 1500000.00

I think his expected salary of like $5-6M is obviously egregious and wasn't expected to be earned at any point during the signing. However, I do believe he should play again next year for around $1-1.5M. That should save the Bucs about $4M.

4) Unfortunately, it looks like Anthony McFarland and his exorbitant contract will be back next season, because even though he's scheduled to make something like $8M, cutting him would create about $6M+ in dead money, and that just doesn't seem likely to happen. I do expect Chris Hovan to re-sign at NT and with a decent contract, probably making between $1-2M this year. I expect DeWayne White to play DE opposite Simeon Rice and beat out Greg Spires, but Spires should stay (will provide solid backup). The biggest need is finding someone to push McFarland to his real potential as an UT this year, and someone to take over for him if and when he invariably falls short this year. A guy like Jonathan Lewis of Virginia Tech or Jesse Mahelona would look fantastic in a Bucs uniform and can be had in the 2nd/3rd round. Both are among the best prototype UTs in the draft (behind only blue chipper Brodrick Bunkley, and Claude Wroten, who is still a bit raw) and either should be a solid starter next year for the Bucs.

What I'm most interested to see is how they shape up their OL. I see a few possibilities:

Status Quo

OLT - Anthony Davis

OLG - Dan Buenning

OC - John Wade

ORG - Sean Mahan

ORT - Kenyatta Walker

Davis to RG, Wade Out

OLT - Rookie/Todd Steussie

OLG - Dan Buenning

OC - Sean Mahan

ORG - Anthony Davis

ORT - Kenyatta Walker

Wade Out, new RG.

OLT - Anthony Davis

OLG - Dan Buenning

OC - Sean Mahan

ORG - Rookie/Jeb Terry

ORT - Kenyatta Walker

Depending on the availability of first round tackle prospects and how they view Anthony Davis (either as a guard or tackle), will determine what they do with that first round pick. I think Option #3 is the most likely to happen. Either way though, Buenning and Walker are locks at their positions, and I see Davis and Mahan as locks to be starters as well, either at LT/RG or RG/C, respectively.

I am also concerned about the safety position. I used to intern at a local Bucs radio station, and one of the questions asked to Jermaine Phillips was who he'd most like to get a clean hit on. He picked Kevan Barlow. To me, this defines Phillips as a safety. He sucks and gets runover way too much.

The Bucs have a lot of young guys at Safety and don't really need to spend a Day 1 pick on one, but whether those guys are ready to play will be one of the bigger questions heading into next season.

Personally, I see our secondary like this:

FS - Will Allen, Rookie

SS - Jermaine Phillips, Kalvin Pearson, Donte Nicholson.

Phillips has been under-performing for most of his four-year career, but now in his 4th year, that potential that the Bucs organization saw in him has still yet to materialize, and he's really just showed that he is capable of being an adequate backup. One reason he stayed last year was because he only made $450k. This year, his salary jumps to $1.35M. He likely won't be released because the net savings would only be about $500k, and that's not really enough to do any damage anywhere. In 2007 though, he will have a replacement lined up and releasing him would save roughly $1.25M.

As far as Cornerbacks go, I expect the Bucs to invest heavily in CB in next year's draft, while only spending maybe a day 2 pick this year. Just like the Eagles did with Bobby Taylor and Troy Vincent, the Bucs will groom both corners starting next year to takeover for Barber and Kelly after two seasons, by 2009.

As far as their 2006 outlook, I see them definitely winning the division and being positioned for a playoff push. However, they are not a championship caliber team yet, IMO. That window likely will be open and shut in 2007, because that's when the young corps will be entering in their prime and the old corps will be initially starting to decline. Hopefully, the Bucs can get a ring in '07, because they will take a step back when Brooks/Rice/Barber/Kelly are gone between '07-'08.

My prediction for them is 12-4, and NFC Runner-Ups.

Think that's about all I can write about now. Have an early morning :) .

Good post. Will address more later when sobered up.

As to this, about 99% sure Walker is an UFA.

I thought that too earlier in the season, but he is scheduled to make $670-830k this year. The reason there was so much speculation about releasing him last year was because of this:

2001 550000.00

2002 430000.00

2003 540000.00

2004 590000.00

2005 2500000.00

2006 827500.00

At that, he has this year to prove himself, or he's gone. I think he's gone after this year if someone gives him a better deal than the Bucs do, but he will definitely hang around this season.

Must be some clause in his contract for that last year.... I can't imagine half the places would have it wrong (with a salary) and the other half wouldn't.

Looks like he is definitely a UFA though... I dare not disagree with ESPN :)

At that, I would venture a guess that the OL looks something like this next year:

LT Anthony Davis

LG Dan Buenning

OC Sean Mahan

RG Jeb Terry/Rookie

RT Chris Colmer/Rookie

You know, that's kinda dangerous considering the Right Side is Simms' blindside :(

 I heard all year he was an UFA and the Bucs were going to have to figure out what to do with him. You're the first person I've come across that thinks otherwise. They were even discussing it on the radio today.

There's no way in the world Colmer starts next year. He was miserable in training camp and never caught on or got a lot of reps in the practices. If Pinyatta walks, they'll need to sign somebody.

I thought so, too, but I just figured that these sources were correct, since they almost always are.Any word on Colmer / Terry?

I know that they had really tried giving Terry the RG job, but Mahan just plain beat him out. Wasn't there a problem with some injury he had or something? I can't recall.

And with Colmer, do you think he's ready? It seems to me like he might be ready to play tackle, but with his history of injuries and his condition (Patronage Turner Syndrome), will he be a healthy starter all year? Looks like a problem waiting to happen.

My main concern is with Terry. If he's not ready or capable, there might be some real problems on the right side

As far as signing a tackle, I could see them bringing in Jeff Backus of Kevin Shaffer...

With the depth at OT this year, they really can grab a quality starter in the 1st or 2nd round (more likely the 2nd or 3rd).

See above for Colmer. There's no way he starts next year.

As for Terry, I heard downright amazing things leading up to the year and in training camp, but then he hurt his knee before the season and Mahan took his job. And as I'm sure you know, there weren't a lot of snaps for backups all year on the line.

I imagine the plan for 06 is Mahan at center (he's too small for guard), Terry at RG, Davis and Buenning on the left and either Walker or a FA playing right tackle.

I'd really like for them to get Walker back for this year, because he's really the best value. He's no pro bowl tackle, but he was a decent starter, and getting 4 of 5 linemen back next year would be such a blessing.

Let's see if we can't hammer out some real possibilites for that RT?

I don't believe that anyone will give Walker a big payday... wonder what his chances are of returning to the team?

I could see him re-signing for a $500-600k salary and playing for a big contract option at the end of the year.

If they don't watch out though, that RT spot could be a real problem.... Winston Justice at 23 would be a dream pick :)

Somebody will overpay for him. There's no way he gets 5-600. He's getting a few million, he was good enough last year that some crappy team will go overboard on him.

Honestly, I don't see much of a chance of him coming back next year.

Idealism!By the by, is everything still on track for the practice facility to open in August? I'm sure that has to be a big lure for free agents..... Sunny Tampa, a young team on the rise, and now a brand new world-class training facility.

Wonder if they could make a play for Archuleta or Demps or Tank Williams.... that would be nice. Personally, I'd love to see Archuleta in a Bucs uniform. Could be the second coming of John Lynch :) .... suppose that's probably just wishful thinking as well.

I wonder what kind of deal he'll command and if the Bucs can afford him.

Mike is a UFA, he exceded performance levels in his contract that voided the last year. And will at the end of the year it seemed sure that he was going to retire, now it seems more likely that he will come back.

The extremely deep draft class for OT's may have an impact on what he could get in free agency this year. Who's going to overpay for an underachiever when they can get a blue chipper in the 2nd round?

I imagine it's the difference between starting a 5-year vet against starting a rookie at OT.There's not a lot of rookies who make it playing tackle in the NFL. While he's not great, Walker at least gives you somewhat solid, experienced play.

OG Mahan will sign tender:

http://www.tbo.com/sports/bucs/MGBX35CEDKE.html

The agent for restricted free agent guard Sean Mahan said Friday the Bucs have issued Mahan a first-round tender worth $1.55 million. The agent, Brad Leshnock, said plans call for Mahan to sign the tender and remain with the Bucs for the 2006 season.

According to Roy Cummings last week, the Bucs were looking at upgrading at OG in the early rounds of the draft, targeting Davin Joseph in the 2nd round. Guess that's not gonna happen...

They won't get near him. There's a zero percent chance he gets by the Chiefs. And I don't think his chances are that much better to even fall to No.20.

Mahan's future is as a center.

I was hoping we'd have a shot at Whittle when he got released, but the Vikings swooped him up right away :(

Hey Cappy... Any local word or anything on Larry Brackins? I think he finished the year on the practice squad or perhaps they even resigned him to their actrive roster with a futures contract, but I'm not entirely sure. I was hoping he might turn into a decent player. J.R. Russell seemed to have a better training camp last year. Both have some potential but certainly have a lot of work ahead before they get there.

Buccaneers | Becht restructures his contract

Sun, 5 Mar 2006 06:52:58 -0800

Roy Cummings, of the Tampa Tribune, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Anthony Becht has restructured his contract. In the case of Becht, the Bucs are believed to have guaranteed a $500,000 roster bonus. Such a move would allow the Bucs to distribute the cap effect of the payment over the course of the contract, thereby saving approximately $400,000 in cap space this year.

PR is reporting Brooks restructured
Called that weeks ago. Hell, I got the exact number right. too ;) Link

Brooks was scheduled to make some unearthly $12.5M this year... the move ends up bringing his salary to a more managable $7.5M....

Anyone who said Brooks was going to be cut or traded is just crazy. The guy may be getting up there in age, but he's still on top of his game, and probably still the best WLB in the business.

Yeah, they signed him to a futures contract a little while back, IIRC. He has a ton of work ahead of him before he's ever a viable NFL receiver. He will be a guy I'm interested in seeing this preseason.

And you also didn't know Kenyatta was an UFA. :coffee:
Yeah, that's what i get for having faith in the NFLPA! Bastards.Wasn't the deadline to be in line with the $94.5M cap at 6pm today? Why haven't Gooch, Stinchcomb and Griese been cut? That would clear out the rest of the cap space they need. Was it extended to 10 p.m.?

Anyone here able to dig up some contract details of McFarland's restructure? He was scheduled to make like $8M.

It'd be cool to see a slimmer, faster Booger in training camp. Maybe he can finally be that UT we've been lacking since Sapp's decline and eventual departure.

Per PFT:

HOVAN TO RE-UP WITH BUCS

A league source tells us that defensive tackle Chris Hovan has reached an agreement with the Buccaneers on a new contract averaging $3.5 million per season.

Hovan was a first-round draft choice of the Vikings in 2000. After his rookie deal expired, the Vikings made no effort to re-sign him, and he landed in Tampa.

His career was rejuvenated with the Bucs, as evidenced by his newfound football riches.

Hovan signed a one-year, $540,000 deal with the Bucs in 2005. Since the contract undoubtedly utilized the feature in the CBA that allows it to be counted as a $455,000 deal, the Bucs can't re-sign Hovan until the new league years starts. In fact, they're also prohibited from even reaching a verbal agreement.

Wow, absolutely perfect off-season so far.

Damn we're good.

Looks like our DL is set for next year:

LDE DeWayne White

NT Chris Hovan

UT Anthony McFarland

RDE Simeon Rice

If White can be that 12-sack threat we've been planning on, that's a hell of a front four (presuming McFarland can provide some real inside pressure).

This is very promising, considering that our OL is pretty much set as well:

LT Anthony Davis

LG Dan Buenning

OC John Wade

RG Sean Mahan

RT ??????

For RT, I see several good possibilities that all make me feel confident heading into next season:

1) Re-sign Kenyatta Walker

2) Promote Chris Colmer

3) 1st/2nd Draft Pick

4) Free Agent

1) Don't see this as exceedingly likely, but this would be a solid signing at the least, provided it is cost-efficient, and heavily incentive-laden in terms of playing time and blocking efficiency and penalty-friendly.

2) I'd really like this guy to step up and be that Tackle they are hoping he will be. Judging from last preseason, he is just not ready yet, and may not be.

3) Eric Winston, Jonathan Scott, Daryn Colledge or Jeremy Trueblood would be a fantastic fit in at RT for the Bucs. Would really like to see them grab one of these four with that 2nd round pick. Should the apocalyptic chance that Winston Justice were to be delivered to the Bucs at No.23, I see no way they can pass on him.

4) I'd really like to see some pursuit of Falcons FA Tackle Kevin Shaffer. He's still a young guy with some upside and is dependable enough to be that guy protecting Simms' blindside. Other options here would include Tom Ashworth or Jason Fabini.

My gut tells me they'll go after re-signing Walker to a reasonable deal that's more heavily based on the 2nd year of his contract, that way they can do like they did with Griese and opt-out if he isn't performing the way he should be. The 2nd choice would be Shaffer, and 3rd would be the draft. I see Ashworth as a solid option as well, but really only see the promotion of Colmer as a sort of getting lucky deal. I still feel he needs some work.

At that, being a Bucs fan and seeing potentially 8 of 9 returning Trenchmen is a great, great sign.

The other concern I have is Shelton Quarles.

Anyone heard anything?
As he was solid for my dynasty league I'd like him to stay put, but they did draft Ruud to be his heir apparent.
That's my concern. The MLB in Monte's defense needs to be adept in pass coverage...not sure how adept a 2nd year player known for his run stopping can be in that dept.

Good post ML.

You think Spires is done?
Not at all. I simply think Spires is a good starter at best, and White will beat him out in training camp.I fully expect White to come into his own next year, and be a dominant force on the line for years to come. When Rice is eventually released in the next year or two (or three), White will be fantastic replacement.

I definitely expect Spires to stay on the team for at least next year. He's a very dependable player, while not a standout by any means. At the least, he will be a very good DE3, and I think he's making $1M next year, so for a backup that will likely see very significant action, I don't see a reason that he is let go.

Ruud has a nose for the ball. If you saw him on special teams at all, you can tell he will be a fantastic run-stopper.Whether he's ready to overtake the play-calling duties of the defense remains to be seen. I would like to see him at SLB this year as an understudy to Quarles. Of course, he'd have to beat out Ryan Nece, which may or may not be that difficult, depending on Ruud's versatility. Personally, I think he can beat Nece out this year if they want him to play SLB.

If they threw Ruud into the fire, I think he might well make the Pro Bowl, or at least have a very good chance of it. He just comes off as a winner, and he's a very smart guy. I think he's ready, but I am not the coach, so we'll see. At MLB, there really is no depth behind Ruud if Quarles is gone, unless they opt to bring back Al Singleton (who I believe is either going to be or has already been cut by the Cowboys).

Kiper has us drafting Chad Greenway in his latest projection...not sure about that fit, but I could see us taking a LB...maybe Sims.

interesting.his mock is insanely different. It's too bad he doesn't ever provide any analysis on his projections until right before the draft. Would be interesting to see the logic behind most of these picks (just looking at it for the first time).

That would be something with three white guys as our starting LBs. White Power! :bag:

Does Kiper think Greenway could come in and be our SLB for the next 2 years or so? Obviously he would be drafted as Brooks' replacement, but Greenway is polished enough to really be able to start and play well as a rookie. So, he'd really need to be on the field IMO.

Drafting Greenway at No.23 would signify the end of Derrick Brooks after this year, and Brooks to me can still be one of the top few WLBs in the NFL for at least another 2 years.

I would expect a 1yr/$1-1.5M deal.... any more than that would just be asking too much IMO.
