It seems like every year, a free agent backup RB signs with a new team with the opportunity to compete for the starting job (if not having it handed to them). Who has the best chance of being next year's Chester Taylor, Lamont Jordan, or Priest Holmes? Guys like this present huge value in keeper leagues if you can pick the right one.

Ladell Betts - backup to Portis in WAS

Najeh Davenport - backup to Green in GB

Nick Goings - backup to Foster and Williams in CAR

Michael Turner - backup to Tomlinson in SD

Patrick Pass - backup to Dillon and Maroney in NE

Dominic Rhodes - likely to be backup to Addai in IND by the end of the season

Other - who ya got?

I didn't include current starters Chris Brown and Ahman Green.

All of these guys were on the 2007 free agent list I looked at, but some of them could have signed extensions. If any signed that you know of, let me know.

If im betting money I go with Ricky Williams :P

If im picking someone who was never a top 10 rb in the league?

Id probably go with Turner. Im not sure who else will be FA though.

This phenomena definitly doesn't happen every year. Jordan and Taylor are definitly exceptions to the rule. None of the guys on this list are good enough or ready for a full-time job IMO. And Pass doesn't even deserve to be on such a list.

Turner is the closest.

I vote for Duckett though. Not to bust out, but become a more prominent back (In Pittsburgh or Denver perhaps)

Of those you mention I like Goings and Betts. I am not sure either one will ever be signed as a potential starter though.

Willie Parker will be an UFA next season and is currently a starter. There is a slight chance that Verron Haynes could take his job sometime this season and if that happen, the Steelers will not re-sign Parker. I could see FWP going to another team and start.

The list I had didn't have Duckett on it (his contract originally went through 2007, but the last year was voided), and he would definitely be in consideration.Pass is probably the least on this list, but he did an OK job filling in for Dillon when he was injured last year and did well on third down. Not a whole lot of difference between him and Chester Taylor.Of course this doesn't happen every year, but with three cases recently, guys in keeper leagues can gain an advantage if they have a guy on their roster who moves into a starting role.

Are we sure it doesn't happen every year? Thinking back a bit, there were guys like Stacey Mack, Trung Canidate, Michael Pittman, Troy Hambrick, James Allen, Olandis Gary, Corey Dillon sort-of, Priest Holmes, Terry Kirby, James Stewart, Lamar Smith, Antowain Smith, Charlie Garner, Emmitt Smith, Thomas Jones, Shawn Bryson who moved from being one team's backup to another team's starter, with varying amounts of success. Some were by trade, others by free agency.
