2008 NFL Draft in Prime Time? (1 Viewer)

Just heard on Fox sports radio that the NFL is considering putting the 1st round of the draft on Friday during prime time next year. Then they would have rounds 2-7 on Saturday.

I like the idea. Might be better for the people who go see it live too if they don't have to wait in line all night or whatever.

Seeing as Prime Time begins at 8:00p on the East Coast, the first round wouldn't be done until sometime after 2:00a using last weekend's draft as a model. A decrease in time between picks would have to come, and be very welcome, as far as I'm concerned.

maybe start it at 6:30pm eastern and hope it ends around 12:30?I agree they could shorten the 15 minute limit. maybe 12, or even 10 minutes per pick should be enough. maybe let people use an extension if they're going to make a trade.

From Goodell's comments at the end of this year's first round, I have a feeling he plans on doing something to ensure it goes quicker anyway.I'm not sure what he could do though. Even if they drop it to ten minutes per pick, we are still talking about more than five hours if every team uses the fully-alloted time. Five minutes per pick would be lightning fast and lose some of the suspense (and a bunch of the picks would be lost due to commercials).

Anything that gives the draft a bigger spotlight is just fine by me. Faletti and I were talking about this exact possibility while we were in NY this year. Russ Lande was very emphatic about the draft needing to shorten the first round to 10 min per pick. A 10 min per pick 1st round that started at 7pm EST would work.

I think that would hamper the team trying to trade.I'd say you just give every team 1 "Timeout", "3 minute Extension" for the life of the draft..........whatever you want to call it.

If they use it to finalize a trade, so be it. If they can't come to an agreement with the other team, they can still make their pick.

But, reducing the time per pick and giving each team ONLY 1 extension would satisfy all involved.

Actually, now that I think about it,..........Imagine how much excitement this would create when in the first round they announced,

"We've just been informed that Dallas has elected to use it's extension here at the 22nd pick in the first round!"

Everybody in the audience would come to a standstill

TV audience would perk up in their chair

Talking heads would speculate

Other teams not involved would get nervous that they might need to get on the phone.

(heck, the NFL could even sell the naming rights to a sponsor............"The Cialis Extension" has nice ring to it. )
