2009 Rookie Scouting Portfolio Sample: WVU QB Pat White (1 Viewer)

As promised (and a little early), here is another set of sample 2009 RSP checklists and profiles. This is my way of organizing my notes when I review film. I believe this structure makes it a little easier for me to make sure I'm watching for a player to demonstrate specific skill sets and hopefully easier for a reader to examine what I might have to say about aspects of a player's game.

These samples are of West Virginia's QB Pat White against Auburn, Pitt, and UNC. These three games really demonstrated the Pat White has the skills to be a quarterback, but what will limit him is what he can change the least: height and weight. It's a frustrating fact to face because when you watch White, a lefty, roll right, turn and just as he's hit, throw a laser beam 40-yards down field to his WR in stride, you it can be difficult to reconcile that teams have a reason to shy away from seriously considering a 6-0, sub-200-lbs prospect.

Jeff Garcia and Doug Flutie are exceptions to the rule. I think White has a chance to be in that category, but it could be a long road to reach it.

Note: Workout times, height, and weight might be absent/incorrect for the samples I post this morning. I wanted to edit the checklist observations and get them online today and then focus on editing everything else for publication.

The RSP is a 500-page, online publication that will be free to FBGs subscribers. Despite its enormous detail, there are rankings and summaries for each position that you can print or save separately from the main file and use as a handy draft day guide. So it's a versatile reference whether you want to dive into its game film break downs or just get the quick and dirty.

Hi Matt,

I like what you do and have subscribed to your Rookie Scout Portfolio in the past. It is helpful.

As a suggestion, one thing I'd like to see you do is to summarize what you see in a player. It's helpful to see that a player scored an 80 in a certain game, and then an 85 in another (and why) but I think what I miss most is that sort of overall projection. Something I can go back to and say, "Ah, yes, I forgot about this aspect of Player X's game". I usually do read the whole thing, but when it comes time for Dynasty drafting I'd like to just see a summary about how you feel about Player X and your reasons. When I'm under the gun it's hard to read through each game and try to get what you are saying about the overall prospects of this player.

Just a suggestion. Thanks.

Thanks for the feedback. I do provide my summaries in my rankings area for each position on a chart that gives my general comments about the guy. I'm wondering if you missed it or looking for something more. The summaries by position show:Ranking: Player/Score/Commentary why I like-dislike the guyComparison: Player/Score/Commentary/Skill sets comparison to past and present NFL playersLet me know if there's something more you're seeking or just didn't see these parts in the past.

You are right, of course. I'm looking at last year's and see it, but I was looking at these samples and did not. I should have looked at the real portfolio.

Obviously I'm looking forward to this year's.

Thanks again.

Hey Bronco Fan,

The RSP will be available on the site April 1 free to all FBG subscribers who have paid for the 2009 season. I am in the process of editing stuff and compiling it for April publication and these are just samples.

Kudos Matt: I'm glad to see you are dribbling out some samples to releive the boredom until the whole package is available.

Oone thing that caught my eye on Pat White was his 3 concussions already. Assuming he does become an effective QB/WR/? in the NFL, how concerned should one be about 3 (one fairly significant) concussions? Sounds like it might make for a short NFL career. Any thoughts?

I think there are a few things to consider about a player with a history of multiple concussions:

1) One has to wonder if you become more susceptible to concussions after experiencing a certain number.

2) The annual pre-SB articles that come out that question the NFL's care of their players have referenced players who have had multiple concussions and several were never even diagnosed by training staff.

3) I think there's a decent point to be made about smaller players having a great chance at sustaining injury because they have less strength/mass to absorb a violent hit and that forces their head to snap back easier. It's one thing to get hit by a 220-lb safety over the middle. It's another to get hit by a 270-lb DE when you're not expecting it.

I think if White is a receiver, it won't be as problematic. If he's a QB, his pocket presence better be great.
