2009's IDP Sleepers Thread (1 Viewer)

Here's two I grabbed today in a deep league:

Brandon Mebane, DT, Seattle

Link

Position change for Mebane? Posted by Eric Williams @ 12:49:40 pm Colin Cole reportedly signed a five-year, $21 million deal with $5 million guaranteed. Team sources confirmed the signing today.

And this apparently ends the pursuit of defensive end Chris Canty, who's agent reportedly has said he will cancel a scheduled trip to Seattle. Canty had been seeking a deal at $8 million per season, which is probably to steep for Seattle at this point.

[More:]

The Packers reportedly wanted Cole back for defensive line depth. Green Bay is converting to a 3-4 base scheme defensively, and Cole would have fit their scheme as a nose guard.

Now with Seattle committing at least a reported $5 million guaranteed to Cole, it appears Brandon Mebane may be switching positions to fill in as a 3-technique defensive tackle, the role Rocky Bernard played throughout his career with Seattle, instead of the 1-technique he's customarily played on the inside shade of the guard.

Check out this defensive front chart for a visual.

The 3-technique position is filled by a player who lines up on the outside shade of the guard and gets more of a pass rush up field. This position also requires a player who can move better sideline to sideline in pursuit.

Mebane has shown flashes of being able to do that. He finished with 5.5 sacks last season and started all 16 games after finishing with two sacks in his rookie season in 10 games started.

Cole seems to be a better fit as a run stuffer and hole clogger at the 1-technique position.

Seattle also is expecting good things from rookie Red Bryant, who was dinged up most of last season and played in only four games in 2008. The usually solid Craig Terrell rounds out the defensive tackle rotation for Seattle.
and Dominique Barker, SS, Texans

Texans re-sign Wilson

The Texans re-signed free safety Eugene Wilson to a three-year contract, the team announced on Saturday.

Wilson signed with the Texans last September after spending five years with the New England Patriots. He worked his way into the starting lineup and started 10 games for the Texans in 2008. Wilson, a sixth-year pro, finished the year with 63 tackles, including 52 solos, and two interceptions.

"I am really excited to be back with Houston," Wilson said. "I like what we have going there under coach (Gary) Kubiak. I feel really comfortable with him, and I'm excited that they are giving me the chance to showcase my abilities."

Wilson was selected as the 36th overall selection by the Patriots in the 2003 NFL Draft. He won two Super Bowls with New England. Prior to that, he was a three-year starter for the University of Illinois. Wilson is expected to start at free safety next season, and Dominique Barber will look to take over at strong safety in the starting lineup.

"I think we have the chance to be one of the better secondaries in the league next year," Wilson said. "We have a lot of the same guys coming back. We are comfortable with each other. We also know how to make plays."
I had also picked up Mebane earlier today and Barber February 15th.

Jim Leonhard is apparently going to be returning punts as well in NYJ.

Maybe some good safety points opportunity?

Weird - or is Leon Washington a KR only?
"Jets coach Rex Ryan plans to pull Leon Washington off punt returns this season with an eye towards using him more at tailback."Analysis: Washington, who's YPC average has leapfrogged from 4.3, to 5.0, to 5.9 in his first three seasons, is also being targeted for a contract extension. He won't take Thomas Jones' starting job, but a 60:40 carry split is possible.

David Hawthorne (who ?) seems to be in the three down LB mix in SEA after the trade of Julian Peterson to DET.

DLs:

Gaines Adams can be a top 10 DL if he stays healthy

The Tenn. DL that replaces Haynesworth.

Cory Redding? Is a change of scheme good for him?

LB:

Cato June, goes back to Indy, maybe he plays like he used to?

Xavier Adibi, he played very well in the few amount of playing time he got.

DB:

Leigh Bodden, he will have a huge rebound in NE.

Dominique Barber, he will start in H-Town.

Aaron Rouse, if he can start in GB, I expect him to be a top 10-15 DB.

So Brooks leaving TBB will benefit who?Cato JuneQuincy BlackGeno Hayes
Geno. But I don't think he puts up Brooks's numbers. I think Ruud is the class of that corp by a wide margin. By class I mean stat compiling opportunity.
I heard that they might be going to a 3-4, which is why they didn't want to keep Brooks around. If so, that changes the value of their LB positions no matter who is playing them.

UDFA Rookie from the 2008 draft class. Had probably the most impressive pre-season of any LB I saw a lot of last year, admittedly, partly because I watch the Seahawks a lot. The veteran LB's had nicknamed him "Hammer" by week 2 of pre-season or thereabouts.

If you can find it, check out the Seahawks pre-season game against Minnesota last year. He was just absolutely crushing people.

He was #44 in the pre-season, I think.

I don't see Hill or Tatupu sitting out 3rd downs now that Peterson is gone.

Someone I've been keeping an eye on is Thomas DeCoud stepping in for Milloy in ATL. I've heard rumors of Coleman at SS, DeCoud at FS. DeCoud seems to be a good athlete, solid in coverage, and had great tackle numbers at Cal.

Well, in our league, he was THE #1 DB two years ago. He gets traded to Detroit, and his stats go way down. I think in NE with a scheme change, he can do really good.

I hear that Kevin Burnett, ILB-SDC, looks like a 3-dn backer after signing as a FA; Cooper is the odd man out (limitations in coverage). :goodposting:

I have been picking up Dawan Landry as sleeper in all my IDP leagues. I think he will put up consistant tackle numbers as Ed Reed continues to play deeper in coverage.

Deep Sleeper: Kenechi Udeze, DE MIN

He is rumored to be ready to make a come back after battling leukemia last year. If he does, he could push Ray Edwards for a lot of playing time opposite Jared Allen.

Sean Considine at SS in Jacksonville. That's a position that made Sammy Knight a Top 3 DB in tackle-heavy leagues in 2007 and Brian Williams into a major sleeper in 2008 (until he was forced to go back to CB when Drayton Florence crashed and burned).

What do you guys think about Nick Roach in Chicago? He's never really done much, but it looks like he's got a good chance to start at Strong side this year. Worth a roster spot or no?

Got to be deep rosters and very tackle heavy. SLBs who don't play in the base defense and have no obvious big play talent have a very tough time cracking 60 solos with any kind of big play/coverage stats.I'd rather use a roster spot on a guy with no chance of playing this season but decent 2010 upside than a guy like Roach in almost every situation.

Considine's value is somewhere between "speed bump" and "turnstile". Good luck with him.

I think that this guy's value just took a steep climb given the way the Chargers went in the draft.

Looks like Larry English (pick #16) is slated as an OLB....possible rep'l for Merriman who "may not be back next year ('10)." Correctamundo on Burnett...he's looking better after, than before, the draft (and he wasn't looking too bad before).

Wes Woodyard is a story....undrafted and just faster than fast....not bulky....fast and Quick. He's ridin' the depth chart as #2 WILB and his best position is using his speed to get to the ball.....i.e., special teams and trying to fit....somewhere, anywhere, including even starting a game last year as an in the box safery in a special coverage package.Campbell is a "shush, keep quit type" so shush, keep quiet and try to figure out where to snag him in a start up draft. If he's avaiable on your WW....then, proceed with vigor.

Smith is usually rostered, Leonard's game is great but he hits too hard for a small guy and is subject to major collision injuries to his fragile frame.

Porter is a stud in waiting. :(

Miami Dolphins notes: Chris Clemons provides biggest surprise of rookie mini-camp

By EDGAR THOMPSON

DAVIE — Rookie cornerbacks Vontae Davis and Sean Smith regularly turned heads during the Dolphins' three-day rookie mini-camp.

But that's to be expected from a first- and second-round pick going against fellow rookies and practice squad players.

A bigger surprise was the play of safety Chris Clemons.

Clemons, a fifth-round pick from Clemson, arrived to camp under the radar but left generating buzz equal to Davis and Smith.

Clemons, who ran the 40-yard dash in 4.33 seconds at the scouting combine, showed he might be able to pitch in next season as more than a special teams player.

On Sunday he made two interceptions, breaking on a sideline pass from Pat White to Brian Hartline with the speed and instincts of a big-time playmaker to make the first one.

"He got his hands on two footballs and finished plays," coach Tony Sparano said. "That was impressive to me."

Sparano expects the 6-foot-1, 210-pound Clemons will be even more impressive once the game gets more physical than it is in camp.

"With Chris you're not really going to see what you want to see, the entire package, until you put the pads on with him," Sparano said. "That's probably the norm with safeties.

"But this guy, when you watch him on film, he likes contact."

With Bell and Gibril, it's hard to see him finding a spot without an injury to one of them... unless you think he can play CB?

I agree. I think he's just a guy to keep on your radar in case one of the Big 2 get injured...or perhaps if you have an open spot on a taxi squad (assuming he keeps impressing people). Good to hear about a safety with that type of speed, who likes contact, and has playmaking skills.

Larry Foote now that he's signed in Detroit?

Where do you put him compared to, say, Burnett or Akeem Jordan? (Obviously probably lower long-term given age, but could have a big year or two left in him)

This is really interesting. Do you have a link?
