some commentary on my draft. it didn't go quite as planned -- i made some adjustments on the fly where i saw value falling...
1.06 Clark, Dallas IND TE
this is the guy i was hoping for at 1.06. i might have taken him as high as 1.01 in this format.
2.11 Austin, Miles DAL WR
i was hoping for another one of the top 5 TEs here (clark, gates, davis, witten, finley), but they all got taken in front of me. i was pretty happy with austin as a consolation prize, though. a top fantasy WR on a team that could go deep into the playoffs. and if you look at the other anarchy drafts, he usually went a little earlier than this, so i feel like i got some decent value.
3.06 Jackson, Steven STL RB
silly that he fell this far.
4.11 Shockey, Jeremy NOS TE
5.06 Olsen, Greg CHI TE
i decided before my 4.11 pick that i was going to fill my flex position with a TE, as long as i could get one of the top 15 or so TEs in that flex spot. i saw a pretty big drop-off in value after that level, and olsen was the last TE i was willing to take this early. so 3 out of my top 5 picks have been TEs now. i liked the advantage i was likely to have at that position, but i was a little nervous watching all the RBs and WRs fly off the board. (i would have my turn. patience.)
6.11 Jets, New York NYJ Def
7.06 Ravens, Baltimore BAL Def
the jets are much better in my opinion than any of the other defenses. plus they're a likely playoff team, which is a nice bonus. i just have to hope they work things out with revis. if they don't, it's still a good defense, but obviously much better with revis in there.
baltimore was my #2 defense (again, by a pretty decent margin), and i figured i'd grab them and maybe start a run on defenses in the process. no one bit on that, but it's ok because the value was there, anyway.
8.11 Williams, Carnell TBB RB
not thrilled with this pick. he was the RB i liked best of what was available, but i don't have high hopes. i knew my RBs and WRs were going to suffer, since i was spending so many picks on other, non-premium positions (or at least they would be non-premium positions in other formats -- here, i'm not so sure).
9.06 Chiefs, Kansas City KCC TMQB
i started thinking about taking a kicker at this point, but QBs were going fast, so i figured i'll take cassel and company as my first team QB. i think they're better than the consensus ranking, but obviously not a top flight offense yet.
10.11 Crosby, Mason GBP PK
11.06 Longwell, Ryan MIN PK
ok, here was my thought on kickers -- it doesn't really matter too much who you have, as long as you're pretty confident he's going to play all season. guys who are a little more injury prone and guys who don't have great job security are not good picks in this format. (for example, i like vinatieri, but i wouldn't want him in this format.) so although i don't see a whole lot of difference in terms of expected points over the course of the season between the top guys and the bottom tier guys, i wanted a few of the top guys just to have that security. because if a guy gets hurt or doesn't keep his job, that's a good 100 to 150 points down the drain, not just the 20 or 30 points that would separate the guys if they played a full season. so i took crosby and longwell -- one of these guys is going to make the playoffs (and maybe both of them) -- and they both have good job security.
12.11 Buccaneers, Tampa Bay TBB TMQB
not too excited about the QBs left at this point, but i liked freeman a decent amount better than the other choices, and nothing really jumped out at the other positions to the point that i'd be real disappointed if i missed someone.
13.06 McCluster, Dexter KCC WR
this is my #2 WR, taken in the 13th round. obviously i made a strategic decision along the way that i would try to get by without spending a lot of top picks on WRs, but i like getting a guy who might catch a lot of balls.
14.11 Washington, Leon SEA RB
15.06 Ward, Derrick TBB RB
not thrilled with either of these guys, but i needed RBs. ward was sort of a hedge, since i also have c.williams, but even if williams keeps the job, ward should see 500 or 600 yards this year between rushing and receiving.
16.11 Washington, Nate TEN WR
17.06 Johnson, Steve BUF WR
18.11 Pre-Draft Selection Made (Edit)
and the last 3 picks are WRs to fill out the lineup.
i'm at a pretty big disadvantage at RB, WR and QB, but hopefully the guys i picked are good enough that my (expected) advantage at the other positions isn't wasted. we'll see how it shakes out. very different strategy this year than i had last year. i finished 5th or 6th last year, which is fine i guess, but i'm trying something different to see if i can win.
