2010 NFL Draft Team Needs - San Francisco 49ers (1 Viewer)

Tony Moss, from SportsNetwork.com, reports one of the club's first-round picks figures to be spent on an offensive lineman, either a tackle (like Rutgers' Anthony Davis or Maryland's Bruce Campbell) to open opposite Joe Staley or a guard (like Idaho's Mike Iupati) who can help Frank Gore run the ball and take some pressure off of Alex Smith and the passing game. The other first-rounder would be well-spent on the secondary, where safeties Earl Thomas (Texas) and Taylor Mays (USC) would both look good in a Niners uniform. The second- and third- rounds could find the Niners looking hard at 3-4 pass rushers and cornerback depth. Also, this club needs a game-breaking return man in a major way.

Discuss!

I don't follow the non-skill position players very closely at all, but I'm not sure I like the idea of Mays or Thomas in the first round. I just feel like, with rare exceptions, safeties are a dime a dozen and should not be selected so high. I especially don't like Mays, who always seemed a step behind the action in games I saw (terrible field vision and playmaking instincts).

I think we will grab at least one OL. Iupati looks like he will be a solid starter and this seems to be a pretty deep OT class at the top.

Dez Bryant would be interesting if he fell. You could make a case for him purely as a BPA pick, but I don't know if they will want to invest that much in WR. Crabtree looks like the real deal, Morgan is a solid starter, and JHill can be a good #3. WR is not a need anymore.

Another name I've seen in some mocks is CJ Spiller. I wouldn't hate the pick if it happens. The team badly needs a legitimate threat in the return game and he could provide some added value as a change of pace out of the backfield. On the other hand, I don't know if he really fits the smashmouth style that Singletary seems to favor.

I just hope we got BPA, frankly. There are some nice talents available this year. The OL group looks good and there are some compelling guys at other positions like Bryant, McClain, and Spiller. If we go with Mays I will be :goodposting: and hoping that Singletary can somehow turn the specimen into a productive player like he did with Vernon Davis (although Davis was a standout college player, which IMO Mays was not).

I don't mind taking an OL with 1 of the first 2 picks, but just feel that this class is really deep. I like Brandon Carter, Chet Teofilo , Dennis Landolt, James Williams later on. A Buluga/Davis combo would be amazing though.

I'd love to see Spiller in SF. Really exciting player. Could turn into MBIII,Felix,Choice with Gore, CJ, Coffee.

AJ Jefferson,Myron Rolle, Major Wright later rounds. Javier Arenas to KR.

Don't you think that scatback RB/KRs are more fungible than safeties? If we're talking glaring team needs, I think scatback/backup RB/KR falls below OL/DB, and even QB. 49ers have to go OL/DB here. And if it came down to it, I'd be more enthused to end up with Clausen than Spiller.Spiller is a wasted luxury pick. He does not have the makeup to project as Gore's three-down replacement, which means we would still need to pick up a quality RB a couple years down the line. Further, Gore is a breakaway threat in his own right, which means that isn't a glaring need for the niners. Taken together, I can't see why people tie Spiller to the niners unless they're hardcore Spiller enthusiasts. It just doesn't make sense. In fact, Spiller's skills (KR/scatback RB) are even more "needed" on the Redskins ... but I don't see anyone mocking him there.

Most people agree that you need two backs in this day and age. The 49ers have Gore, but Coffee looks like a bust and the cupboard is otherwise bare. If the team's evaluation has Spiller as a top 15 talent then I'm okay with the pick. He can provide something that no one else on the roster offers, which is elite speed out of the backfield/slot and a game-changing threat in the return game. Is that worth a first round pick? Maybe not, but I would rather have him than a safety.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not crazy about the thought of Spiller to the Niners. I won't hate the pick though. He'll help somewhere. Maybe not to the degree you hope from a top 20 pick, but he'll help.

I'd just as soon see them take two linemen (OL or DL) or a LB. It really doesn't matter to me as long as we get a couple solid players. I don't think safety will be good value, although I really don't know much about Earl Thomas. Maybe he's great.

If Williams is avalible at the 9er's first pick then its a no brainer. Since I doubt that will happen, they need to take either Thomas, Haden (if he falls, then thats the no brainer) or trade back and get another 2nd or 3rd round pick and get Davis with the 17th pick. Seattle should address their OL needs with the 4th pick so I dont see them taking him. The Giants and Titans have more glaring needs in their linebacking corp and D line to take Davis so they could wait. You can address the KR/PR need in the 3rd round if a Gilyard or McCluster are avalible.

What if they waited on DB and took a Nate Allen in the 2nd?

Here would be a great first 4 picks for them.

1.13-Dez Bryant

1.17-Anthony Davis

2.49-Nate Allen

3.79-Dexter McCluster

All except for the 3rd round pick sound very reasonable but I'd see them taking a pass rusher over a Dez Bryant with that first pick.

Frankly I'm pretty stoked about this draft because I think SF can pick up 2 good starters possibly even pro bowlers in teh first round due to the depth of talent in this class. Kiper's got the following names in his top 17 overall: (which i roughly agree with)

1. Gerald McCoy

2. Ndamukong Suh

3. Sam Bradford

4. Eric Berry

5. Russell Okung

6. Bryan Bulaga

7. Earl Thomas

8. Trent Williams

9. Derrick Morgan

10. CJ SPiller

11. Joe Haden

12. Dez Bryant

13. Jason Pierre-Paul

14. Dan Williams

15. Rolando McClain

16. Brandon Graham

17. Mike Iupati

Personally I wouldn't mind having a combo of any 2 of those guys. I don't really feel like we NEED Bryant or McClain, but if they picked them I wouldn't exactly be complaining either. Basically I think the niners are gonna be alot better on both sides of the ball next year. Having said that, I feel the team would benefit most from an injection of speed. Meaning Thomas, Haden, Spiller, Pierre-Paul get an extra boost in my book. I wouldn't even mind if we DIDN'T get a tackle in the first round if the right players fell to us. The one thing I don't want to see in this draft is for the niners to go reaching for an OT when clearly someone else is better left on the board. (i.e. taking the 5th/6th best tackle over someone like Haden or Thomas)

The closer the draft gets, the more I hope the niners pick up Earl Thomas with one of their 1st rounders.

IMO it's a perfect fit. Thomas is a fast safety (4.35 40) with great cover skills and a nose for the football. That versatility allows to him to be heir apparent to either Michael Lewis or Nate Clements, both on the downside of their careers. A safety who can man up on the slot receiver is a great asset for the D. He's a "character" individual and sounds intelligent in his interviews. The one knock on him is his size, but seriously who cares about how big a DB is if he can't be around the football when it's in the air?

I've watched enough UT games to see that Thomas can really take the niner D to the next level. A fair comparison would be Brian Dawkins, who isn't a big guy but always wreaked havoc on opposing Os.
