2011 Broncos Training Camp Observations (1 Viewer)

Cecil Lammey

Footballguy
Here we go! One of my favorite times of year is when Training Camp at Dove Valley begins...it's like Christmas x1000 for a guy like me. My on air schedule is crazy this time of year, so I'm just tweeting my practice notes.

Follow me @cecillammey for #broncos stuff

and of course @theaudible for #nfl takes

Here's some thoughts from today:

Final point on White for now. he can make this team if he plays like he did today the rest of camp and stays healthy it's the feet! #rexryan

Cecil Lammey

cecillammey Cecil Lammey

White showed good balance, instincts, and moves! Again, footwork most important attribute for a RB - it's why he's gotten by on avg talent

Cecil Lammey

cecillammey Cecil Lammey

combine white's feet with Moreno and you'd have something there!

White showcased his great feet today, making good cuts and keeping his balance running against the grain

now on to #broncos RB LenDale White - SLIM! TRIM! FIT! not too skinny (like Moreno) and still big thighs, strong bubble

#Broncos RB Jeremiah Johnson was the best back in practice today, LenDale second best

LOL at Jeremiah Johnson being a future star.
It's the NFL, anything can happen. BTW, people said the same thing about Arian Foster who was BEHIND JJohnson on the Texans depth chart. I'm not saying he'll lead the league in rushing but the guy has skills and looked much better than Knowshon Moreno in practice today. Again, practice observations here from the sidelines.

I watched him a lot in college, he looked decent but unless he somehow completely changed i don't see how he can become an NFL bellcow.I'd take the under on 100 carries this season.

He's added weight and has retained his speed post-injury. Long shots and 'out of nowhere' guys come from, well, out of nowhere! Open your mind to the possibility. Nobody is saying OMG GRAB HIM NOW, but it's interesting to note how he looks to this new staff as they revamp their ground game. Foxy will split carries, and the COP guy will get 130-150...Johnson could do that IF (a big IF) he can stay healthy.

Interesting take.If I remember correctly, last year during camp there was a lot of good things coming out of Houston about him.
- He gets hurt all the time- not a good inside runner- not a fluid receiver- he's been dropped off practice squads of numerous teams already in his short careerDoes he have a hail mary shot of becoming Arian Foster despite being the guy that teams just dump off their practice squads? I guess so, but he's 100x's more likely to never become relevant.

Well, I did, Cecil, after you answered my JJ/LenDale question on Twitter.

I have a couple of rebuild teams *desperate* for RB help, so why not take a flier on a guy like Johnson who, as you said, was ahead of Foster last year, is apparently looking good this year, on a team with an RB situation completely in flux?

This is how you can get a guy like Foster before he actually does something of note.

I would rather take a shot with a guy like this, over a rookie who you pick up at the end of 4th round of drafts who is buried behind entrenched starters...

Anythings possible, i'm sure i'm holding bias from his college days as i haven't seen anything of him in the pros. i'll keep an eye out for him but unless he's morphed into a new player just can't see it.

Ok, Cecil... I'll let you be my brakeman, but I'm the engineer on this train baby!

Johnson was considered a 2nd round pick leading up to the combine in 2009, but teams found a chronic shoulder problem (he'd been popping it back into joint during games all season at Oregon) and the Texans signed him as an UDFA then waived him after camp before bringing him back and put him on IR. I forget the exact terminology here. He had surgery afterwards and the shoulder doesn't seem to be a problem anymore.

Fast forward... he was having a nice preseason in 2010 when he dinged up his ankle. Until then all the camp reports were good to very good. He had a good live scrimmage with the Saints (IIRC). Anyhow, when he got hurt the Texans were already up against it in terms of the roster because they'd lost Tate, they obviously liked Foster and still had Slaton. So Johnson was a cut. But if my memory is right most observers thought Johnson had moved ahead of Slaton when he got hurt.

At some point in 2010 the Panthers picked him up, but let him go. That's my biggest concern - that Fox already let him go once. Though it certainly could have been a RB numbers game there in Carolina. DWil, Stewart, Goodson, Sutton and even Josh Vaughn (who's about as far off the radar as it gets for an adequate RB). Anyhow, maybe they didn't like him, but maybe he just had too far to go as a mid-season pickup to make the squad.

That's my memory of how things went at least. Could have some of the details wrong.

Anyhow, the reason that I've followed Johnson so closely is that when I do my historical comps for him they're all fantastic - the players most similar to Johnson have done well in the NFL. The only knock on the guy is that he's slow (4.62 at the combine). I'm not surprised that he's standing out.

So IMO if he stays healthy he's got a legit chance of being an average to good starting NFL RB. He's almost certainly a better 1st and 2nd down guy than Moreno if reports of Moreno at around 200 pounds are accurate. And I'd like his chances of overtaking someone like McGahee (even though I think McGahee's a little underrated currently) as well if it came to that.

It appeared that he made the team until he got hurt. I would imagine we would have still signed Derrick Ward when the Bucs cut him, so it's tough to tell what his role would/could have been. He definitely was a pleasant surprise when I watched him in the preseason games and in the few practices I attended...

Agree. If I'm going to play a longshot, it will be on a 5'10" 230 rookie with 4.38 speed rather a 5'09" 210 guy with 4.62 speed who has been cut 3 times.
Provided the roster isn't too small, why not both?I can't think of a running game more unsettled at the moment. That's where you get value.Well that and Shanny starting a guy he shared a cab with this morning.

Yea, why not make a play in a deeper dynasty, rebuild and such. Next year it could read: This is how you can get a guy like J. Johnson or Spann before he actually does something of note.

He didn't stand out today....just like he didn't stand out during the week of practice for the NFLPA game earlier this year in San Antonio. The conditions were miserable in SA, thanks goodness for Texas HS stadium with THREE LEVEL PRESS BOX....oh Texas! What I've seen from Fannin in person:fast in a straight line, needs it to be blocked though, too slow footed to one cut and gowhen he builds a head of steam he is very difficult to bring downI will be keeping a close eye on him for sure!

I picked up Johnson based in part on this thread, though he has been on my radar for a bit. It's a pretty deep dynasty and my team is pretty awful at RB (looking like Darren Sproles may be my #2, yuck).

Been watching him in Auburn, and feel confident saying he can't hold McGahee's jock. Could possibly hold Moreno's jock, but certainly not his shoes. I'm getting a seat on the Jeremiah train in case Moreno's train derails.

John Elway looks like he was born to be a figure head. Everywhere he walks he exudes class and confidence. I love seeing him cruise the sidelines. He has a glow. (no homo)

Really looking forward to hearing more thoughts down the road on Moreno. ESPN had a deal where they were saying how good he looked, but you seem to contradict that just a tad lol.

:goodposting: The thing to remember is that Johnson (or any other "nobody") does not HAVE to be a star to have value. Take a look at Denver's depth chart right now. What do you see? Sure, they could sign another RB and likely will. But right now, there is Moreno and a bunch of nobodies. One of them could have value this year. It only takes a game or two for a backup RB to have value. Also, Moreno was banged up for a good chunk of last year and missed three games. We all can figure out (within reason) what the known players can do. The unknown players can be the difference between winning and losing leagues. It only takes one week to change a fantasy season. While I think it is unlikely that Johnson becomes a star, it's not out of the realm of possibility that he could have some value. I'm not predicting he will, but it is possible and that's all that matters right now (at the start of training camp).

Anything on defense? Like who is running with the first team front 7?
mostly watch the skill position guys, but I will say this:front 7 is going to change in the next week or so...right now you have Kevin Vickerson at DT with Ayers and Dumervil at DE....other DT spot is up in the air (maybe Jenkins, Mebane, Franklin???)Also, Jeremy Beal is playing DE..looked quick yesterday. David Veikune looked decent too.

lets kill this thread. i've got drafts going on right now and some starting next week. 32 team league I need these sleepers to stay asleep tyvm.

i was listening to your competitors radio station since you guys still haven't gotten back out to Northern Colorado and they were talking about Virgil Green and Julius Thomas and they had the two flip flopped. They were talking about how big Green was and how great his vertical jump was and how he played basketball. :)

Last edited by a moderator:
Lammey tweeted earlier that Julius Thomas was "putting on a clinic" and I get excited cause I have him deep on my depth chart.

Then later I read on Bronco forum that Green looked better. :kicksrock:

Why do I get the feeling that whoever gets out of Denver first will break out? It's not the Broncos so much but Fox is not exactly known for TE value.

Anybody want to make any predictions here? (Offer not valid for LHucks)

Day two observations here:

AGAIN, I focus on skill position guys, lots of stuff going on and want to see them primarily.

Decker has downfield skills too and is swifter than some think, deceptive speed for sure

Decker has good concentration and strong hands to gather passes when ball is getting swiped at, if u want 2 knock it away u better b serious

Yes, Decker doesn't get amazing separation but he catches every contested pass thrown his way, uses frame to his advantage

@AnthonyDay5 #broncos could add another QB or WR in free agency.

@AnthonyDay5 got only a few CB notes, watching skill position guys

@JoshLiskiewitz I really like the way DOOM is looking Josh, still lightning quick, good to have him back!

Knowshon Moreno had a better day at #broncos camp - looked good catching passes in drills and scrimmage

back to Jeremiah Johnson quickly, looked good on wheel routes out of the backfield, looks pass in, turns up quickly, good burst 2

@kndh19 Miami trade is pretty much dead, on life support for sure, option to trade him all through camp/preseason

@JoshLiskiewitz Doom looks strong, playing DE in a 4-3 is nothing new 4 him, better as a 3-4 OLB IMHO but he's smart/strong told me he's 260

Lance Ball is a great guy but average instincts, gets swallowed up by defense, low center of gravity tho and good balance

Minor too slow, too indecisive, and didn't press edge to create cutback lane on outside run, not going to happen for him...moving on...

Loved Brandon Minor when he arrived at Michigan with Kevin Grady, however not standing out at #broncos training camp

Johnson not overly fast but gets to top speed in a hurry and doesn't lose that speed when he changes direction, anticipation good, vision 2

okay, on to the #broncos RBs Jeremiah Johnson with another strong day, quick initial burst, very decisive and explodes out of cuts

@DannyMoody yep, hitting starts tomorrow

@JoshLiskiewitz he was dropping back in coverage, sticking to slot guy (it was E.D. that time i believe)

Adam Weber looks decent, but stares down receivers too much and doesn't have the arm strength to throw across the field #broncos

Brady Quinn looked more confident running the offense and continued his strong performance in #broncos training camp, making the most of it

Miller got up and started to run with the football and the crowd at #dovevalley erupted in applause, a great play, great reactions/hands

one of the low passes from #broncos QB Orton was picked off by Von Miller...a GREAT play where he scooped the ball with two hands

@IDanov based on only practice it should be Orton, however, Tebow is a gamer and could impress in real gametime situations

Cecil Lammey

cecillammey Cecil Lammey

#broncos QB Orton still looked focused, throwing with zip although timing was a little off today, some passes low and behind WRs

Cecil Lammey

cecillammey Cecil Lammey

I liked Tebow's footwork today, very precise and he spun the ball better because of it, first part of throwing starts in your legs

Cecil Lammey

cecillammey Cecil Lammey

Tebow threaded the needle between two defenders but D'Andre Goodwin dropped the pass, good to see Tebow take the chance and not checkdown

Cecil Lammey

cecillammey Cecil Lammey

#broncos tebow had a decent day passing but did throw at least 1 pick, some WRs really let him down too

Cecil Lammey

cecillammey Cecil Lammey

#broncos Tebow looked better today, good but not great, seemed to be throwing naturally instead of aiming, took some chances downfield

okay, day 2 practice notes...mostly of skill positions #broncos training camp

lets kill this thread. i've got drafts going on right now and some starting next week. 32 team league I need these sleepers to stay asleep tyvm.i was listening to your competitors radio station since you guys still haven't gotten back out to Northern Colorado and they were talking about Virgil Green and Julius Thomas and they had the two flip flopped. They were talking about how big Green was and how great his vertical jump was and how he played basketball. :)
The Fan I assume? who was talking?

No offense Cecil, but i hate the twitter format. I know it takes more time to type everything up, but cut and pasting twitter responses is bush league. Don't be me wrong - i'll still read it and hang on every word, but part of me dies on the inside to read 1/2 conservations condnsed into 140 characters or less, full of hasbtags and whatnot.

Twitter will be the death of responsible journalism.

:lmao: i love his takes but he blew up my twitter with about 30 tweets in a row, machine gun style.

Moleculo, I hear ya man...just comes down to time. My on air schedule is crazy right now, and I've no longer the time to write out reports. i take notes during practice then tweet them when I get home....breaking stuff during practice like Von's ankle injury today. thanks for understanding brother, and glad to know you still check out my Broncos stuff!

Be patient, they're working on it! At least that's the BS they were spewing out when they made the switch. Apparently they are really slow workers. Cecil, you seem like a decent guy, and I love your insight on football matters, but my faith in the radio station that you work for died months ago. I feel like I was lied to by them and that they don't give a bleep about their (former) listeners.

No worries, my rant wasn't aimed mostly at you, it just seems that all news breaks on twitter, and there's been lots of bad leaks lately as well. Within y twitter, any jackass can throw stuff against the wall and hope it sticks...get a couple of stickers, and then that jackass has a reputation as some sort of inside source. The legit media guys are no better in their race to break the story. I guess I'm just tired of the twitter ( and those damn kids on my lawn).Anyways, i am glad to see the TC reports again, and i hope the lockout gave you a chance to get a some rodeo in.

Cecil, now that it has been reported McGahee has NOT signed with Denver yet, can you tell us which RBs are in Denver working out this weekend?

(KFFL) The Denver Broncos, who had a miscommunication in a deal with free-agent RB Willis McGahee (Ravens) earlier in the day Friday, July 29, could audition him and a handful of other running backs this weekend.

It's not OFFICIAL, just like Young to Philly and Roy to Chicago the Broncos don't want to be fined for tampering. McGahee was not officially a free agent until Friday at 4pm, news of a deal came Friday morning. He will go through a team physical and if he passes then a deal happens. My sources say a contract offer already in place, just needs physical. 99% this deal gets done.

Any chance for some "unbiased" reports on Julius Thomas/Virgil Green ?

how are my reports biased? Thomas has clearly been the standout while Green is playing like an average guy. He was better today, but still outshined by Thomas who is already lining up with the starters. Green playing with the scout team.
