Really torn on this one. There's a clear shortage on corners in the NFL. Philly plays two top passing games 4x in the division (NYG, DAL). You need 3 corners there. Now, the system stunk last year. They should be playing hybrid (man with Nnamdi, zone with Asante). DRC can play 3rd WR in man under. Why they didn't do that I have no idea.If they think Asante is (A) a cancer or (B.) doesn't fit the scheme - they better have a plan for 3rd corner. Corners can and do get hurt. Hanson is not a starter for a reason.Selling this as a money savings move doesn't hold water.
From what I remember from my short HS football days is you can't play two different coverages on each side of the defense. Causes too much confusion and doesn't work as effectively as some think.

Pretty interesting article about the change in philosophy, not just for the Eagles, but a trend in the NFL that the Eagles are moving towards. Personally, I'm fine with trading Samuel, just can't believe he'll only get them a 5th or 6th. Seems like robbery for the Falcons, unless Eagles know something about him we don't.
According to Channel 6 another pick might be involved.
Interesting...maybe a 2013 4th or 3rd? I'd be OK with that. More than I was expecting.

That's a big pay cut. Surprised Asante would willingly take that big a cut. What's happening that we don't know?
I'm wondering it Samuel felt that he wanted out of here after he had his "feelings hurt" with the trade rumors last year and all and felt it was better to go else where? Could be possible. Maybe DH has some info from his buddy on that we don't know yet.

Take it with a grain of salt as that's the only place i saw it from. If it is I'm pretty happy with it.

For a team that usually makes sound decisions when it comes to trading players not sure how getting just a late round draft pick and 9 million off the books this year makes sense trading Samuel away. I'm guessing they want the extra space to sign McCoy to an extension and they are crossing their fingers Asmougha and DRC return to form.Although I agree he is a Pro Bowl CB, I won't miss the weak tackling and blown assignments trying to pick the ball off all the time. They need someone who can play up on the line now and then.

I'm really not worried about losing Asante. Always felt he was a gimmick defender. Makes a big play and then lets up one the next series. Never, EVER wraps up. It's almost comical how bad his tackling is. Adds no leadership to the defense, is on the back end of his career and has a me first attitude. What exactly are we losing here?
Funny everyone mentions the tackling which I will admit is bad...I believe DRC and Namdi BOTH ranked as worse tacklers then he did. This was about money...plain and simple. The pick we get will be cut in August.
I don't care where they "ranked." I care about what I see. Nnamdi and DRC are probably not good tacklers but nobody is worse at tackling than Asante in the time I've been watching football.
Sorry but there was no way you watched games just last season and could have possible thought that Nnamdi looked better at tackling. He looked awful...at least Asante would drill someone every now and then but yuo didnt see anything like that from Nnamdi
But I have seen Nnamdi tackle in Oakland. I've also seen Nnamdi cover people in Oakland too. I'm chalking up last year as an anomoly for him.

I hope you're right. My biggest issue is other then money (which I dont care about) we got worse today and for no real good reason IMHO

I'm very interested in seeing how Nnamdi and DRC play this year, assuming Juan Castillo has figured out how to play them. Plus they have time to gel with OTA's and a full offseason. Next up has to be extending McCoy, but first DRAFT TIME.

What are you guys looking for? Players? Positions? If Cox and Kuechly aren't available at 15, I want them to trade down. Red zone threat WR in the 2nd, backup RB in the 3rd or 4th, slot corner, SAM LB, OL/DL depth.

The last thing I want is to trade back. I want to see them be aggressive and go get a guy. I either want DT, Saftey or Lber.

Ya 7th rounder seems lower then expected. I think he warranted a 5th in my opinion. There was likely more going on here then we all know... be it an injury, locker room disturbance, plans to get another CB, plans to use that cap money on mccoy or others, him really wanting out, or something they saw in DRC, etc. 7th rounder is nothing, we just wanted to unload him.

No one is happy with a 7th rounder, but it is plainly obvious that he was going to get cut otherwise. Denver seems to have offered more to the Eagles but with a worse re-structuring for Samuels. In this situation, Samuels held a lot of the cards as he had to restructure his deal, thus determining where he went. This was a salary dump, and I hope they extend Shady and DRC.I do feel CB will be addressed in the first two rounds now.

Did anybody catch Brian Baldinger on 97.5 this morning? He bascically said Samual was washed up and no one bit on his "playing opposum" style anymore. He also said Atlanta will flat out suck this year, that their defense and o-line are eroded and he picked them to finish LAST in their division. Pretty interesting...

Not surprised that this nugget went unaddressed by the Samuel lovefest crowd in this thread. Baldinger was spot on about McNabb being washed up a few years back after they moved him to Washington.

I want the best player available dont care if it's CB, Rb, Wr whatever because things change very fast in the NFL and a strenght now can be a weakness in two years when you reach because of position it only hurts your team.

Deion Sanders used to play man, and the rest of the team would play zone. It's been done several times with elite corners.

Yeah but Samuel isn't elite and Deion is in a different league then a lot of CBs. Also Deion had Safety help over the top a lot.

Are you sure? Not trying to disagree just trying to figure if that was true or not. Either way it just wasn't working here with all 3. DRC and Asomugha played much better when Samuel went down. Just doesn't fit their draft scheme and paying a 31 yrs old CB 21 mil the next two seasons wasn't going to cut it.

That's what made Deion Deion. He shut down half the field and allowed the safties to help in the run game and with the other corner. He got burned now and then, but so few QBs tested him, so having help over the top was completely unnecessary.

Absolutely positive. Deion was on an island and more than held his own. He was a shutdown corner, just like Nnamdi or Revis.I don't know if you really paid a ton of attention but Nnamdi was mis-used a TON last year. He was in zone, not man, and that's not what he should be doing at all. Asking a man corner to play zone is a HUGE mistake.

I'm more interested to see how he would view the rest of our CB's. I don't know much about the PFF ranking system for CB's but they had him pretty high and I never thought Asante looked washed up. I also have no clue what opposum is....He also gets no brownie points for the McNabb being washed up part either. He was clearly declining and was going to a 4-12 team. Stevie Wonder saw that coming.

Asomugha had 38 tackles last year and 12 missed tackles

Samuel had 30 tackles and 8 missed tackles

DRC had 24 tackles and 7 missed tackles

In the last three years,

Asomugha had 87 tackles and 25 missed tackles (22%)

Samuel had 99 tackles and 37 missed tackles (27%)

DRC had 121 tackles and 26 missed tackles (18%)

Unreal. Not only do they trade him for 'a late round pick', but they trade him to ATL, a team they seem to play every year (including this year).
simply infuriating. He'll make a big impact in Atlanta. Dumb trade.
I think its fair to wait until the draft is over to figure that out.If we get McCoy signed to an extension, do you still feel the same way?

Who knows what went on in the locker room, but I can think of a ton of reasons why to get rid of him. One easy one is he doesnt fit the new defensive scheme.

Aso is horrible in Zone. The wide-9 needs press corners, exactly the opposite of JJ's zone blitz system which wants in space corners.

Only guess is teams arent interested. We know that Asante's agent has been allowed to shop him and a contract restructure.

Asante has been solid for the Eagles ever since he came to town. One of the Eagles best FA pickups and money well spent in my opinion.
I take Peters, Jenkins, and Babin before Asante in todays scheme. In JJ's scheme I might think different. Also, I think I will be saying the same think about Ryans after this season

So I just got done ready an article about why the Eagles should draft an OL, either Rieff or Stanford OG. The more and more I think about the Eagles draft, the more and more I think they cant screw this up. If any year they get a block buster draft class, its this one.

There is tons of talent in the first 2 rounds at every position. If the Eagles play their cards right, they could get 3 starters (maybe situational) out of the first 2 days. I keep going to back to trading up, and I simply dont see the need. When we keep reading these articles, they keep saying 'BPA'. Well, we dont need to trade up since there will be tons of BPA's at 15.

Heck, I could see us trading out of the first for another 2nd and a future 1st and come out with 3 picks in the 2nd with 3 really good players. I personally keep looking at the 2nd half of the 1st round and dont see huge distinctions between the value. Lots of DL, WR, CB after the first 10 or so picks.

So, Im going to go out ona limb and say there is no way we Shawn Andrews or Brandon Grahmn this draft up. No way we trade up for a bum. Its a :lock:

Drafting a G in the 1st again would not go over well at all. Do they need depth on the OL? Sure but not at the expense of finding a possible player that will actually start or see a significant amount of playing time ( CB DT LB )

Yea, it was about depth. With a win now team we need to make sure depth is there if Bell goes down

This.I'll take my chances on a late round offensive lineman or a cut by another team after the draft for depth.DT, LB & DB are a MUST. At least 2 of the 3 have to be early IMO

I'm really thinking that we get priced out of trading up to 7 for Cox. More likely IMO we go with BPA at 15 which I think will be Gilmore the CB

Be prepared to hate Samuel even more. I'm told that the Eagles had significantly better deals on the table from DEN and TEN but he nixed both because he didn't want to go there. It wasn't even about the money (the offers were very similar), he just didn't want to go there.
