2013 ESPN Free FBG groups: Gridiron Challenge, Pick 'em, Survivor (1 Viewer)

When you sign a guy, you have that guy at that price until you drop him. Though if his price drops you can hit the "Renegotiate" button and it'll drop it to whatever the new, lower rate is. Basically this saves you the hassle of cutting the guy and adding him back at the lower amount.
How are you able to do this? I only see the ability to add or drop, and even if I do drop a guy and then re-add them, Im still getting them at last week's - more expensive - price.

I'd just like to brag and thump my chest a bit about how ###-kicking Batcat FC was in picking eleven winners to tie for first in the spread comp.

:ahem:

Sorry I didn't notice/note this change for this year. Looks like they made a little bit of a change to this contest from last year. Basically the idea now is to sell high - this gives you more cap space as the year goes on:

"Gridiron Challenge now uses a "floating cap" system that rewards you for increases in the Price of the players on your roster. When a player is dropped the system automatically calculates the difference between the player's Salary (i.e., the price at which you last acquired that player), and the player's current Price, and applies that total to your overall Salary Cap. This "float" will increase or decrease based on the player's performance. For example, you initially acquired Tom Brady at a cost of $7.0M, and after four weeks his Price has adjusted to $7.5M. If you drop him at this time you would be awarded a $0.5M increase in your total Salary Cap. Conversely, if Brady's Price adjusted down to $6.5M, your Salary Cap would decrease -$0.5M. If you do not change your Roster your team will continue to accumulate points with your current Roster in future weeks. For a more detailed example see the How to Play section.

 • Floating Salary Cap - Entrants select a roster of eight (8) players and one (1) Defense/Special Teams while staying under the salary limit of fifty million dollars ($50 million). A player's initial "Price" is based on 2012 final season statistics and projected 2013 performances. A player's Price may adjust from +$0.3M to -$0.3M each game during the season based on their performance."

My only regret is for the gridiron, Julius Thomas was $5k, if I picked him up I couldn't afford Graham, settled for Sudfeld and Graham. Got Demaryius though! :moneybag:
How are you doing this? I only see 1 TE position slot.
Losing my mind, I meant if I took JT I couldn't afford the same receivers that I couldn't afford if I took Graham, who had a poor week 1. So I took Graham, Demaryius and Kenbrell (I regret many things.)

Doing absolutely horrible in the pick em, but okay in the Gridiron and still alive in the Survivor.

I like my shot to move up in the Gridiron this week, im in the 75th percentile but I finally shed Brady who has been dragging me down.

I read thru the rules last week and noticed the salary cap thing as opposed to renogotiating, but one thing I dont see anywhere is what about bye weeks?

Is it that youre basically forced to drop guys on a bye to fill that spot for the week, and then expected you can pick them back up because their value doesnt change?

Well yes, the objective is to accrue best possible lineup by buying low. I somewhat trapped myself by picking up Lesean Mccoy when he was relatively cheap (5.7), so if he were to have an early bye I would be unlikely to reroster him after weathering the bye as hes gone up 0.6 already in just two weeks - fortunately his bye is week 11 and I'm gonna ride him until then.

My team is currently valued at 51.9, but I'm rostering Ben Tate - so if everyone else continues to perform well that disparity will continue or even grow and ill always be stuck with someone like Tate as my RB2.

My cap is 50.2 - my team value is 51.9 at this point.

It is interesting. It basically turns the game on its head - the idea is to pick up guys who will get better so you can horde space and get whoever you want at the end. Previously you had guys either under-perform and/or fall out of favor, recoup space and look for cheapo guys.

You didnt really answer my question. So during a bye week, Im basically forced to drop Rodgers, Peterson, Calvin, etc (or McCoy for you) because I cant score on a bye, but I also dont get the leverage Ive had from having them since week 1 and have to pay the up-price?

Since I havent done this before, I still dont understand how this works with bye weeks. If you hold onto a player whose value has increased, but then has a bye, what is the reasoning behind keeping them when they wont score points, or dropping them and having the pay for them at an increased price?

You aren't forced to drop anyone, you can field a player on bye if you wish to keep them at their lower value at the expense of the potential points, but if you wanna stay competitive - yes you will have to drop players on bye.

Arguments can be made that if a player is having a career year and his value was going up literally every week that it would be +ev to take the hit for one week than to miss out on him for the rest of the season since you likely wont be able to afford him after cutting him.

But your cap doesn't realize the gain until you cut him, so I think the key is to ride his value until it's as high as possible (or until you need the increased cap space), then cut him and add someone else whose value is about to go up. I don't know how they're going to address values as the byes come in, but my guess is that a player's value takes a dive on his bye week and then rises dramatically the next week. So, if you want to realize the biggest gain, you need to cut a player with a Week 5 bye in Week 4 (before it falls). Does that make sense?

If I ever needed any more proof that I will never bet NFL games, I need to look no further then the FBG Pickem:

Snogger's Vikings - 13pts - Ranking (38.9%)

You can keep them and get zero if you really want to :) Actually you get to sell them at market rate (which can only go up or down by no more that 0.3m each week) and apply that extra money as new cap room. They've changed how the contest operates from previous years.

I apologize for any early thread confusion I may have caused as I didn't realize until, well after week 1, that they changed how they do salaries.

In years past, I've often kept a stud like Calvin through his bye week because his price tag had gone up so much that you couldn't afford to get him back. Now, you can invest in a player like him, get the cap increase for his value peak when you drop him on bye, pick up a lower priced guy with a good matchup and get his value rise for the week, then go get Calvin back while (potentially) increasing your salary cap in the process.

Now this makes sense. I think the one thing that was confusing me since its so early in the year, is the +/- value change. It seemed like you would only get the bump or decrease in cap if you dropped a player based on the previous week, but it does appear that its whatever the overall +/- is since you have owned them.

What still remains to be seen I think is how does the bye week effect a players cost. Does it hold - because they arent playing - or does is decrease because they put up a 0. The price holding makes sense to me, but you never know. Consider a guy like SJax value hasnt changed and he's supposed to miss at least a couple weeks, Id lean toward a player's price being locked during a bye.

Sitting at 148 pts for this week, in 4th place currently with Demaryius Thomas and Matt Prater still to go.

With week 4 behind us, we have our first solid evidence. As far as I can tell, Cam Newton and Aaron Rodgers, who had week 4 byes, both showed no change in their values going into this week. This leads me to think you are correct -- a player's value will not change during his bye week.

If that's true, there's no reason to willingly take the bye week zero, unless you're sitting with a potential negative cap adjustment, I guess.

I may or may not have Brees, Peyton, Mccoy, Charles, Megatron and Graham. Prater and the Pats D for 3 weeks proved to be quite fruitful.
