2013 NY Giants Offseason (1 Viewer)

Wow it’s been quite in here since Cruz signed his deal

Looks like the defense is tinkering around with the 3-4 defense using Tuck as a rush LB

Prince seems to be playing well in camp thus far

Shaun Rogers seems to think that the DL can be the best in the league

I’m looking forward to seeing how the defense looks in the 1st pre-season game this weekend

what's the latest on Nicks? Is he getting closer?

Nicks is basically 100%. He'll take it easy all preseason because of his contract situation.

He returned to practice earlier this week

I'm not sure if he is going to play this weekend though

Yes ... the defense as a whole looks much better with great depth at every position.

Looking forward to seeing how the LBs play ... The signing of Connor and Curry was huge for the LBs and allowed Kiwi to finally move back to his natural position. That and drafting DeMonster gives them nice depth at DE.

I'm hoping Marvin Austin finally gets it together if he does their DT youth and depth will be sick

Hankins has been doing great as well.

I was hoping we'd hear Will Hill was having a big impact but not much about him.

Concussions to the young linemen is disappointing too.

Linebackers sound solid. But are they good compared to the recent past groups of LB or on par with LBers other teams are carrying?

Eager to see if Robinson can be a dynamic TE for the Gmen.

Hill is going to be suspended for the 1st 4 games

I think the LBs are going to be the best they've had in years. Herlich seems to be coming into his own and Connor back in a 4 3 could be real stong @ MLB. Curry and Rivers have huge talent and if they could stay healthy they both could be primed for big seasons.

Impressive Dan Connor Highlights from last seasons

Hill has been able to practice even though he'll be suspended. Just would have like to hear he was having a great camp.

Anyone hear the interviews yesterday on ESPN Radio? Pretty good listen, if not that informative. Great to just see football on the TV in the bars at least... won't be able to watch tomorrow's game though, unfortunately.

Giants vs Steelers 7:30pm

not playing tonight:

OL - James Brewer (concussion)

WR - Brandon Collins (hamstring)

FB - Henry Hynoski (PUP-knee)

DT - Markus Kuhn (PUP-knee)

WR - Hakeem Nicks (groin)

DE - Justin Tuck (back)

DE - Jason Pierre-Paul (PUP-back)

OT - Justin Pugh (concussion)

G - Chris Snee (hip)

S - Cooper Taylor (hamstring)

CB - Terrell Thomas (knee/hamstring)

RB - Ryan Torain (concussion)

Really excited to see what D. Moore (the kid from Texas A&M) will do tonight. The reports out of camp have been glowing.

It will be interesting to see how the LB situation is going to shake out

Giants have had three 3rd down situations thus far on offense

Andre Brown has been the back on all three occasions (Wilson was the RB on 1st and 2nd down on all three occasions)

Run defense was very disappointing in the 1st quarter. The Steelers gashed the Giants running to the right. Giants held up pretty well on runs to the left but runs to the right was horrible.

Hoping the absence of Tuck and JPP is somewhat to blame for the failure of the rush defense, but the first quarter didn't look good.

Could you guys tell me who you think has the 3rd RB position for the Giants?

I was thinking it might be Ryan Torain or Michael Cox but in the 1st preseason game I am seeing Da'Rel Scott is the 3rd up to bat.

Who do you guys think will win that job?

To me this is looking like a 2RB split not 3 but I would still like to know who the 3rd RB will be in case one of the 2 starters gets injured.

I'd think Torain. If Cox gets return duties, then Scott might not make the roster.

Any other insights from last night? Appears that the Wilson / Brown split was somewhat expected although with so little time on the field hard to judge. Was stuck with family and couldn't see the game.

Moore - how did he look other than the punt block? Other tools show anything, albeit against 2nd and 3 rd teamers.

With Brown and Wilson playing so little it's hard to take much from it. Also 3 of the O-linemen didn't play. Still it's very disappointing that they had to settle for 3 when on the 5 yard line.

Writers are raving about Moore. He had the block, around 6 tackles and several hurries.

I suspect Moore was in the whole game as a conditioning test. But he looked really good throughout the game.

Who saw themost action last night? On offense, it was Jim Cordle (74%), Stephen Goodin (65%), SelvishCapers (54%) and Brandon Mosley (51%).

On defense, Austin (50%), DaMonsta (44%), Broha + Mundy (44%), Tracy +Williams (42%) + Hankins + Patterson (41%)

I'd generally say not to concern ourselves with the poor goaline play, but that seems to have been an issue for a while for us. Lets hope we get a solution there.

Thanks for the info

Big Blue View speculating that Austin will not make the final 53

DT (5) -- Linval Joseph, Cullen Jenkins, Johnathan Hankins, Mike Patterson, Shaun Rogers

Sorry, Marvin Austin. Rogers only played nine snaps Saturday to Austin's 33, as the Giants are giving Austin every chance to show them something. In those 33 snaps Austin did not even get his name on the stat sheet, so that isn't going to get it done. Of course Rogers' ability to hold up might be an issue, so things can change.

New York Giants RB Michael Cox Hopeful to Make Team as 3rd Running Back
August 9th, 2013 at 11:30 AM By Doug Rush

Four months ago, Michael Cox nearly went undrafted in April's NFL Draft, but with two picks left, one before the infamous "Mr. Irrelevant" spot, the New York Giants took Cox with their final pick. But Giants general manager Jerry Reese saw a lot of potential in Cox, who first attended and graduated from the University of Michigan, and then transferred to the University of Massachusetts, where he had 198 carries for 715 yards and five touchdowns in 2012 for the Minutemen. Reese saw a lot of great things of Cox in college that would translate well into the NFL, as he told Kieran Darcy of ESPN New York.

"You don't see a lot of production, but if you look closely at this guy, we are excited about him," Reese said at the time. "He is big, powerful, elusive guy with speed. He has got a lot of things that we like about him."

Listed at 6'0" and 220 pounds, Cox has a similar frame to Giants starting running back Andre Brown, who will share carries with the team's other starter, David Wilson, With Cox's size, strength and speed, he could vie for the third running back spot behind Wilson and Brown. In camp, Cox will have competition for the spot, as he will be competing with Da'Rel Scott and Ryan Torain for playing time and the spot on the team.

However, Torain suffered a concussion in Tuesday's practice and likely will not take the field when the team plays in its first preseason game at Heinz Field against the Pittsburgh Steelers. With the backups likely to see most of their playing time in the second half of the game, Cox is sure to see plenty of snaps and carries against the Steelers and could make an early impression on the coaches.

In the first couple of weeks at training camp, Cox has looked very impressive, even though he's currently listed as the team's number five running back on the team. Giants running backs coach Jerald Ingram thinks that with his abilities, Cox could do some special things on the field for the team if given the chance.

"He's a very talented young man," Ingram said earlier this week. "He has the ability to do certain things, but he has to, like all young running backs, they have to learn the system. You just can't toss them the ball and say, 'Go do this.' [it's] just like we went through a year ago with David in situations. He has to feel comfortable about learning our offense, and we're comfortable with him that we can trust him in most situations. But he does show us a lot of good talent out there right now."

It wouldn't be the first time for a seventh-round draft pick to make an impact and eventually, win a starting job on the team. Back in 2007, Ahmad Bradshaw was a seventh-round pick for the Giants and he was a key part of two Super Bowl championships and even scored the go-ahead touchdown in Super Bowl XLVI that won the game for the Giants over the New England Patriots 21-17.

It could also be possible that the Giants decide to use a three-back set in their offense, which worked in 2007 and 2008 when the team had Bradshaw, Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward, who were known as "Earth, Wind, and Fire." With those three, they combined to rush for over 2,300 yards in 2008 and lead the league that season in rushing for a team that went 12-4.

If Cox can use his size and speed for the Giants and focus on what he needs to do, he could end up beating out Torain and Scott for that third running back spot and give the Giants another dimension to their already explosive offense in 2013. http://www.sportsmedia101.com/newyorkgiants/2013/08/09/new-york-giants-rb-michael-cox-hopeful-to-make-team-as-3rd-running-back/

Very disappointed in the way they looked tonight...

Corner backs looked horrifying ... Arron Ross had one of the worts plays i've ever seen. Hosley had inetrception (thrown right into his hands) but fell down after a few nice moves ... looked like it could've been a TD if he didnt fall.

David Deihl? Honestly dont know how he could even make the team after this performance ... did not look like an NFL Olineman in his play or his physical appearance! What the hell happened to him?

Failed 4th &1 by Brown ... meanwhile Colts succesfully pounded a 3 & 1 right up the mddle.

Barden despite a few catches looks clumsy and stupid. Lots of bobbles and drops by DBs, Wrs, Returners. Eli looked pretty bad as well

Baas and Cruz hurt ... What a disasterous night

If he gets cut then I guess it would be that they don't think he'd ever develop. So far he's done well in both pre-season games. I'd like for him to make the team especially because Jenkins, Rogers and Patterson are over 30.

Cryptic tweets from Curry seem to hint he's been released.

When God reveals things and makes it known, BELIEVE Him. My time here has been awesome.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

I was hoping he'd live up to his potential. Sucks for the team if that won't be the case.

Stevie Brown going down for the year hurts a lot. I read this morning that Kenny Phillips is on the roster bubble in Philly. He could be a good replacement.

Mentioned this is another thread. Really tough loss. Our vulnerability to the big play concerns me, and if the D Line can't come back really strong, this could be ugly. If our revamped run D doesnt step up, then we really have a problem.

Anyone on the roster a possibility here? Phillips would be welcomed back, but I wonder if the Eagles would be less prone to letting him go knowing the pinch we are in.

Losing Brown will definitely hurt, Prince needs to step up. Phillips can't play CB so its unlikely he helps much unless that would allow Rolle to play more coverage. But T. Thomas looked good. Let's hope Prince stays healthy and Hosley steps up. All in all the Defense played well.

The Giants look sluggish and unfocused on offense. Wilson's romp was good to see. The offensive looks much better with Cruz in there. I think Nicks will be fine. Eli could look better, haven't seen him really step up and take control. It's preseason, so harder to gage, the tools are there if the G-men can execute.

Not feeling it this year. We have so many good pieces, but just seem to lack something to tie it all together. Big holes in big places for the team, especially on defense. If the pass rush is not just out of this universe, it could be another frustrating season of some dominant games, some close loses / great wins and some real headscratching crap fests. That seems to be what the past 5 years have been, with two great and perfectly times streaks for those dominant games to shine through.

A real shame if we can't pull this together with the Super Bowl here at home... and maybe the fact that I'm somewhat pessimistic is good, as this team seems to do well when we don't expect them to, and vice versa.

I didn’t get a chance to see the game against the Jets due to a fantasy draft

I saw the Wilson TD run on highlights which was awesome but outside of that everything I have been reading is that the offensive line and Eli looked terrible

Losing Stevie Brown is really bad news because he seemed like the only playmaker we have in the back 7

That said the defense can't be as bad as it was last year can it?

Any word D. Moore? Is he back at practice? I think he is going to have a great year for the Giants this year if he is healthy.

This isn't necessarily surprising because Torain is a talent of any kind. Just more so I'm shocked the Giants would rely on Cox and Scott until Brown gets back. This either signifies they expect Brown back sooner rather than later or that they truly trust Wilson to fully run with the job.

Giants released RB Ryan Torain.
27-year-old Torain was beaten out for a roster spot by seventh-round flier pick Michael Cox. Torain is clearly on his last legs in the pros. Aug 31 - 9:59 PM

I was hoping Austin would get more time to see if he developed into something. I guess it won't be a big deal if they can retain Linval and Patterson next season to go with Hankins. Just concerned that they won't be able to keep them. I'd really hate to lose Linval next year.
