2013 Official Dallas Cowboys Thread (1 Viewer)

I know its been said many times before, but I would be content with cutting a lot of the dead weight, taking that hit and sucking next year. Get high draft picks and do some rebuilding. We really need someone who can evaluate talent going into the draft..It all starts there.

Regardless of his cap number, I don't think you can cut Witten. Been a solid Cowboy. Never an issue on or off the field. And if you look around the league at the talent at the position, I would say he is still a top 10 TE.
This is mistake we continue to make over and over. We can and should cut him, it's not because he can't play anymore. It's becasue the value he provides is not equal to what we are paying him. We can save cap dollars that can be allocated to better resources that will help the club in the long term. We are not winning anything right now with this team.
I agree with your sentiment, but Witten costs $8.4 million against the cap in '14, and he has $8.6 million in dead money if he is cut. So unless he is hindering the development of a younger TE by playing it probably makes sense, in this instance, to keep Witten for 2014.
Fair enough. I had a different number and I thought it saved us cap $$$. Not that I don't trust your numbers, but I want to go double check mine.
I got mine from over the cap.com for what that's worth.

You guys are talking like these kinds of players grow on trees. How'd the last 2 TE's we drafted work out so far? Any replacements for Witten yet? You build around your core.

That's why some folks disagree with the blow up idea. We have a solid core to build around on both sides of the ball, right now. What about the current management gives you the confidence to think if they did "blow things up" they'd replace our roster with championship caliber players?
Exactly its such a simplistic solution to a complex problem. Its like saying legalizing marijuana would solve all US financial issues. While it may be a start its not the end all and be all solution. Dallas needs to take their lumps and continue to draft like the above average team they have been under Jerry Jones (seriously compare their drafts to others you wont find many others better) but its just easier to condemn Jerry for everything whether true or not. To clarify if he was not the owner he would not be a GM for any team this long but at the same token its cap management that has hampered this team along with questionable trades along the way (Roy Williams anyone lol). I would like to think he is learning from both. Realize that you cant fill your roster with free agents due to salary cap restrictions and quite frankly do the best you can. Additionally you fire Kiffin and hire an established D-coordinator. That's the best case scenario and most likely scenario in my mind. Also at that this point it would be UTTERLY stupid to fire Garrett. He is starting to put things together as far as head coach and if not for historically bad defense Dallas would be contenders this year. I truly believe that. If they had a defense they would have beaten Denver, Green Bay, and Lions putting them at 10-4. Hell you could even make a case for San Diego and KC games as well.

Dallas is #4 overall in points scored I don't think its far fetched to assume with their track record Dallas fills some holes on defense thru the draft and actually put together a mediocre defense. Could this team with the #4 scoring offense and a mediocre defense truly not compete for division and perhaps a playoff win?

I'm done supporting this group of losers.

:tfp:
I have been a Knicks fan since 1991 and watched a once proud franchise turned into a dismal failure sporting the highest payroll and least amount of wins and a running joke to all other NBA teams and fans. If you think Jerry as GM/Owner is bad I urge you to google James Dolan and get back to me. For past 22 years not once have I given up on the Knicks. Dallas is no where near this level of failure so please see yourself out and bandwagon somewhere else.

It is this line of thinking that keeps Garrett employed and buries us in medicre 8-8 seasons every year. I'm sure you're right, though. Something is bound to be different if we keep doing the same thing.

Looks like some of you might have to fill in on defense for the game this weekend. Just some advice, don't try to tackle Alf Morris high, you'll end up on the C'Mon Man segment.

Also....I would like the club to be called the Dallas Hamstrings for the rest of the year. Our 12th player this year (TWill) will miss a game due to a hamstring injury.

It is important to stretch before any physical activity. ;) It is odd how the same injuries can plague a team at times, does make a person wonder what is going on.

I would argue your line of thinking "blow it up" cost us Sean Payton as a coach. Moreover Sean Payton made the same ####### mistakes Garrett has been making while in New Orleans but they were patient with him. Reverse on 4th and 1 anyone?

You might want to revisit your Cowboys history books on this one. How exactly would you characterize the 2005-2006 transition as blowing it up?

c'mon, this loss is all on Romo. He does it every year and multiple times at end of games at the end of the year and when it matters most.

Just letting off steam. There's no other team I'm going to cheer for but the Cowboys.

I'll be interested to see how the team comes out. Are they playing hard? Or have they given up like they did to Wade. If the latter, then Garrett is gone. If they come out fighting and playing hard, Garrett still has the team.

I just cant stop thinking about up 26-3 at halftime, Murray with a 7+ yds per carry average, and running the ball 4 times in the second half.........Inexcusable

I apologize for not being clear, I was insinuating that the "blow it up" attitude in regards to coaching staff and firing them without giving them a real opportunity and not the roster. I also see the irony that I am asking for Monte Kiffin to be let go but in my defense he is so bad in the NFL and his last coaching gig at USC that I don't really see it changing anytime soon whereas Garrett is getting better every year. I really thought that Sean Payton should have been given an opportunity to coach the team and I lobbied hard for him on this message board.

Yup great call when your QB can only manage to put up 36 points I don't know how you can expect your team to win.

Yeah its certainly maddening, I get that Jason Garrett was trying to stay aggressive which I appreciate but you were dominating the first half with your running attack. It would be one thing if you were only averaging 2 or 3 yards per carry but you were averaging 7 yards. Who do you blame more the offensive coordinator Callahan or Garrett?

How is it you feel Garrett is getting better? Wasn't the narrative before the Packers game how we had to establish the run more consistently? In my mind, Garrett was the #1 reason we lost last week's game. I can't count how many time I have come away from a crushing loss and pinned it to Garrett, and I haven't felt that way about any coach in Cowboys' history. So, how did the Packers game solidify in your mind that he has gotten better? From a game management standpoint, I still can't name a worse coach in the NFL. And, that's with a good 3 years of data, none of which in my review of his work, has indicated a change or improvement in one single area. So, I am curious what data I am missing from this equation, since you seem to be the only one bullish on Ginger.

I blame Garrett, because he's the HC, and ultimately repsonsible. And going away from the run is a Garrett trait since he was OC. Even with a lead, he/they seem to panic when the other teams scores, and then all the sudden Romo's throwin all over the field. Instead of imposing their will with the run game, suddenly, the playcalling seems tenative and reactionary. Drives sputter, time not taken off the clock..........

It just seems like the Cowboys, at times, can play with anyone. But only in spurts. And then when the tide turns, it turns big time.

I was talking to a co-worker, who's a Lions fan. He says its kinda worse to be right on the cusp, only to have your hopes crushed, than to just flat out suck. Lions fans know plenty of both. I said, dude! the Cowboys have been toying with their fans for years! It drives you crazy. Then it makes you mad. Then you give up and say you wont watch........but you do. Then you get desensitized. You dont care........oh but wait, they can still win the east...........sonofa#####!

Well for starters Dallas is #4 in the ENTIRE league in scoring offense averaging 28.1 ppg. Garrett is getting it done on the offense and had Jerry not hired the idiot Kiffin this team likely takes a big step forward. Garrett does not have a defensive background so you really cant put the defensive struggles on him.

You're absolutely right. The head coach should have nothing to say with respect to the defense.

Yea, you guys have had some brutal games this season. After winning the east last season, makes it even worse.

I really feel for RG3. I like the guy. Kinda reminds me of Romo in some ways.........Early success, regression, lots of criticism, nice guy. Being consistently successful as an NFL QB is prolly the hardest thing in pro sports. He's a talented guy with a level head, I think he'll bounce back.

My gut tells me that this coaching staff will get one more crack at it, no matter the outcome in the next couple weeks. Failure next season.........Its blown up.

This year, I dont see this team making much noise, if any, if they somehow get into the playoffs. The defense is just too much of a mess. And, apparently we can only run the ball in the 1st half of games.

Next season, IF we are fortunate with injuries and younger players step up their game, this team could be pretty good (I know, you could say that every year almost!). With that said, there will have to be strides made in game management and execution on the field. These are big IF's, I get it.

Question:

What do you guys think are some likely scenerios are for the salary cap/personnel situation in '14? Cut Ware? What about Witten? Spencer? Safeties? Contract restructuring?

I do think you are right and Jerry will give Ginger another year. Kiffin won't be back for sure, but Jason probably stays.

I'm not up on all the contracts, but I do know CBS just listed the cowboys as being in the worst cap situation of any team going into 2014 (contrary to popular belief, this isn't a very good team at managing the cap), so there will be a ton of cuts, restructuring, and maybe a trade or two this offseason. They have no choice, so some talent will continue to swiftly erode from this team. We can, however, be proactive and choose to accelerate that process or circle the drain for a few more years and start the rebuild at that time.

I hate to say it, but I dont think cutting D.Ware would necessarily be a bad thing. I think we'd save like 7 mil against the salary cap, right? As much as I love D.Ware, he's not the same guy. How much of this is due to converting to D end, and how much is just wear and tear? I feel like its mostly the wear and tear. Lets be honest, Selvie has out performed him.

This team does still have cap problems and will next year too. Possibly 15 will find it on the backside if the bad contracts get pushed into there. But 14 should be the worst of it.

I expect massive restructuring will ensure 2015 is a bloated cap year requiring more restructuring to defer to other years, etc., etc., wash, rinse, repeat. Unless you believe in the cap fairy, we have absolutely zero chance of landing any good FAs over the next three years, given the job Jerry and Stephen have done managing the money.

Wow, that game was ugly. I gotta hand it to Romo though. He gutted that one out, and made the plays to win the game. You cant say the games are ever boring with Romo at QB.

If we make the playoffs, we might be pullin guys outta the stands to play LB.

And somebody has got to get to the fricken QB!

Cant win with you man. Garrett is an OFFENSIVE coach sure he has some input but its not like he is designing blitzes and weekly game plans for the defense.

Popular belief huh? Gonna need a link to that; should not be hard to find since its such a popular belief. I mentioned that Jerry had done a good job of managing to fit all those bloated contracts under the salary cap but struggled when it came to re-signing veteran players.

Always good to beat the Redskins in RFK, period. If you don't feel that you lost what it's like to be a Cowboy fan.

I give Romo credit, 4th and 10 for the season and he comes thru. Say what you want, he gives us everything he has.

We all know it, Dallas will be up against it next week, especially on the defense but you have to play the game. Philly looked awful vs Minny last week who was disgraceful today. You just never know.

Yup Romo eluded unblocked blitzers all day. He was masterful although the stat sheet might not necessarily reflect that. Not many QBs could succeed under the same circumstances.

We should be killing ourselves to come in here and heap praise on Romo equal to the hate and consternation he got for last week. Both probably deserved, but I, for one, love the guy.

Great game against an E-L-I-T-E 'Skins defense, lame duck head coach, and backup quarterback. :homer:

Should just hand Romo the MVP trophy and a lifetime extension for Garrett now.

Garrett should have been fired after the 3rd and goal call. Who the hell runs a ####### stretch call there, especially when it's 4 down territory? Romo bailed out our coach big time. Agreed he played better than his stat line

Not trying to be argumentative, but I thought it was a reasonable call. Give the ball to the most effective playmaker (Murray) behind your best player (Tyron). Well, maybe Dez is the most effective playmaker, but it was reasonable in my mind. What wasn't reasonable was how many Skins were there waiting for him. What the hell was the OL doing?

I dont know about you guys, but I hate the eagles more than any other team. Their fans are the most obnoxious in the NFL, followed closely by the seachickens. They are the eagles west! haha.

Right now, I dont care about anything but beating the dirty eagles!

I'm happy the Cowboys won today. Looking forward to seeing them play against the Eagles week 17 for the division.

I know its negative in here lately. Its a roller coaster ride as a Cowboys fan.

No matter how much I complain about the Cowboys, I'll be watching every week hoping for them to get it done. I wont be holding my breath though!

And here we are again..............a familiar storyline. It hasnt played out well in the past.

I like Romo. For his sake, I hope we come out pounding the rock, and the D plays halfway competent. Then we'll have a chance. Winning the east is winning the east!

Oh I'm all about giving to Murray, but right up the gut. Hate the stretch play in that situation because of exactly what happened. Murray needs to just go down there, but Garrett nearly lost the game with an idiotic call.

Same here. I'm a Cowboy fan who lived in South Jersey for many years. Eagle fans are more annoying than a $5.00 hooker with a bad case of crabs.

I have been naive for a long time when it comes to fans. I really have only gone to Detroit home games and a few Detroit road games where opposing fans don't really hate Lions fans because they're not a threat.

Anyway, it is shocking to me how awful Eagles fans really are. It's almost as if they like the reputation and they play up to it, an excuse to behave the way they do.

I will always root for them to lose. Dallas may not be good enough to beat Philly, but Philly has their own problems, they aren't good enough to win the SB and really that's all that matters. The NFC East is the worst it's been....ever. For Philly to need to win on the last week speaks to itself, they aren't very good in the grand scheme of things despite the performance last night.

If the Cowboys bring their "A" game it will be a shootout at best, if the don't they'll get blown out.

The Eagles installed a new offense and switched from a 4-3 to a 3-4 this offseason. The fact that they even have a shot at the playoffs speaks volumes to how good a job Chip Kelly and FO did this offseason. The Eagles have a ton of cap space available (as usual) and with another offseason of competent drafting and FA signings, the sky is the limit for this team. Superbowl this year, doubtful. But their window has just opened up...again.

I lived in Philadelphia for the first 27 years of my life. Therefore, I am an Eagles fan. Therefore, I also root passionately against the Dallas Cowboys. However, I have now lived 22 years outside of Philadelphia and I have learned a few things:

1) Philadelphia fans are some of the most passionate fans in the country, and will support their teams, positively and negatively, whether they are good or bad. They are not fair weather fans.

2) Philadelphia has some of the most obnoxious, idiot fans in the country. And generally the ones that act the worst are usually the ones who talk the loudest. It is not always easy rooting for a team with those fans

3) It never pays to talk trash to other teams fans because at some point they will usually have an opportunity to talk trash back to you

4) It never pays to talk trash to other teams fans as a Philadelphia fan, because at some point they will ALWAYS have an opportunity to talk trash back to you, because the Philadelphia team will always find a way to mess things up.

I am not here to apologize for other Philadelphia fans. I am not responsible for them and they would not want me to. However, I will say that this week, as I try to do most weeks, I will try to be a respectful fan, and talk respectfully to Cowboy fans. Most of you guys seem like good fans, and if it weren't for the fact that you root for the Cowboys, I would probably root for your team to win. Good luck this week, and I hope it is a great game on Sunday no matter who wins.

I am very excited about the way the Eagles played last night, but I still remember last Sunday's game against the Vikings, so anything can happen. I also still remember the end of the 2009 season when the Cowboys probably had their two biggest wins at the death star winning back-to-back games against the Eagles to win the division and then win the wildcard game. I think Foles performs as he has much of the season, and leads the Eagles to a 31-27 win. I attribute that pick as much to the Cowboys ability under Garrett and Romo to find a way to lose a big game as I do to the ability of the Eagles to win a big game.
