I think Smith is a smokescreen for trading down.

Yeah, maybe seems like Howie is more of a BPA guy and Reid seemingly valued need higher than Howie. I'm definitely on board with BPA, at least in the first two rounds(as long as it's at least somewhat of a reasonable fit).

Im an old head so I don't know what FWIW means but the reason the Geno thing was such a big deal was because the Eagles made it one by bringing Lurie with them. Everyone expects them to meet with a lot of the top guys in the draft if they didn't it would be dumb but when they added Lurie something they have done in the past it makes it a bigger deal IMO.

You can't be "tight=lipped" about a meeting and workout, with a potential draft pick when your whole team is there. I don't believe in the smoke screen at all but I do believe the meeting served many puposes. One was certainly because he's in consideration for the #4 overall pick. As many have said in here, if he's a guy they believe can be a franchise QB they would be stupid NOT to meeting with him before every other team and one-on-one like they did. The other side is just by them showing interest teams like Arizona and Buffalo (if they love him) may be more inclined to make a move that could benefit us.

I just think bringing Lurie just made it a much bigger deal then it had to be. Does what Lurie thinks about a Qb potential mean that much to Howie and Chip if so the Eagles are in trouble. Like I said there is no way to hide it because of NFL rules but there are way to make it look routine which the Eagles didn't do.

I'm with you regarding Star as well. Right now (IMO) the biggest needs are RT and the other DE spot. I have read numerous places that said Cox can play both the 3 and 5 technique in the 3-4. That could mean a lot. There's also been reports that Kelly's staff is high on Cedric Thornton so maybe they feel like the DL is complete? Either way we should be in great shape come the draft.

I forgot all about Thorton but I did like what he did last year and I think he could be pretty good in a 3-4 but that would be a huge IF to start the season.

Millner could be an option but if they don't sign another CB that would tell me that they feel comfortable with Boykin or Marsh on the other end. Kelly traditionally like the defensive side of the ball to be "big"...that could benefit Marsh if they like what they see from him.

I don't think Marsh has played enough to have a real good feel for him but it does worry me that the Eagles were putting Hughes out there at CB over him because IMO Hughes was awful. I like Boykin but I see pure slot guy same way I felt about Joselio Hanson.

Smith is a guy I like as well. He's going to command a lot of $$$ though. If they can get Winston or Volmer a lot cheaper that would be fine as well.

I would be fine with any of those guys and I agree Smith probably get the most but the Eagles should still have a good amount of money left and they have picks I just think RT is by far their biggest need.

I believe there would be 7 new starters and honestly, on a unit THAT bad it's needed. Competition needed to be created there and let the best man win. count



I honestly just didn't add Cox in call it a brain fart but I'm not sure Kendrick will start this year. Just wondering where you would see him start in the Eagles 3-4. I think OLB are going to be Graham and Barwin so I'm guessing ILB but I just don't see that I think he is going to be the back up somewhere.

Jenkins was more of a name at this point. GB got rid of him when they switched to a 3-4 because he couldnt handle the run in a 3-4, I'd say thats why he was let go from here as well.

Jenkins played two years in GB's 3-4 and in his second year there he got 7 sacks in 11 games which is pretty good. I'm not one of those guys who pretends to know everything about every other team because I really follow more of the Eagles and my fantasy players so I read a lot. When Jenkins left GB most GB fans seemed to hate it and the ones that didn't said he was just overpaid for a 30 year old who missed 17 games in his last 3 years there. I really didn't see more then a small handful say he is better suited for a 4-3. Now saying all that GB fans are much kinder then most Eagles fans with departing players so who knows

I think the Laurie thing was blown way out of proportion, in my opinion. This isn't Jerry Jones or Al Davis. Laurie has alway been hands off. For all we know he was at the Lattimore one or simply had some free time and decided to attended the Geno one.

Yeah he is. I'm sure he'll get his fair share of money from someone. I want to see Graham play the Predator ( Rush OLB) this season. I think he's going to excel in this defense.

I think you have to sign one of those really solid FA tackles... that way you can either go Geno, Miller, or Jordan at 1.4 ... Those guys fill an immediate need, and the line will be much stronger.. best of both worlds IMHO....

I haven't seen anything lately regarding the Eagles and FA's on Twitter. A tackle would be great, could also use another 3-4 linemen. It would be amazing to go into the draft with almost all of the holes filled and just draft BPA, or the guys Kelly feels that he can use the most effectively.

Vollmer is good but not great. He has a nasty streak and thats nice though. My gut tells me that Vollmer is looking for the most money, but I cant imagine he is getting Winston type Tackle money

If we arent trying to sign Winston, it has to be because we are targeting a T in the draft BECAUSE Peters is expected to come back healthy. Could you imagine if Peters isnt back healthy and we dont select a Tackle in the draft AND dont sign a RT?

I still really believe 1.04 is too high for any CB, ever. If we cant trade down ...I think you have to look for playmakers on the DL, like Star or Floyd. If not them, maybe Jordan if we beleive he is the real deal. If not, you need to consider Geno.The chances of us drafting at the 1.04 again are probably slim. We have to take BPA here as I dont believe we will ever get another chance at a player of this quality.Now, Chip could mess all this up and we could be picking Det, StL, Cle style for the next few years, but I would vote against that.

Yea but provided they don't get hurt, I think there is a much better chance guys like Joekel or Fisher will pan out and be deserving of this high draft spot moreso than Geno. And the QBs who will bet there in the mid 1st next year look to be just as good as Geno, if not better. I think it's better we build up both sides of the line 1st and roll with Vick for this season and address QB next year (as well as taking a flyer on a guy later in this draft).

Kelly's List guides Eagles in free agency

One of Chip Kelly’s first tasks as Eagles’ head coach was to write a job description for each position on the football field and hand it off to general manager Howie Roseman.

The two men needed to get on the same page, and they had to do it quickly. There was film to study. Players to evaluate. Decisions to be made.

This past week, during a wild and frenzied free agency period, we got a glimpse of what that top-secret information contained.

Call it Kelly’s List.

The one common denominator on it was size.

Whereas former head coach Andy Reid liked his players smaller and quicker, Kelly wanted his Eagles bigger and bulkier, and if quicker was part of that package, then so be it.

The team brought in eight players in free agency, then Friday acquired wide receiver Arrelious Benn in a trade with Tampa Bay.

All but one of those players is at least 6 feet tall. The only exception is cornerback Bradley Fletcher, and he misses the mark only by a single inch at 5-foot-11.

Nose tackle Issac Sopoaga is 6-2, 330 pounds.

Outside linebacker Connor Barwin is 6-4, 268 pounds. Until Barwin arrived, DeMeco Ryans was the biggest linebacker in height and weight at 6-1, 247 pounds.

Safety Kenny Phillips is 6-2, 217; Nate Allen is 6-1, 210; Kurt Coleman is 5-11, 195.

Bigger and bulkier.

That’s the way it was when Kelly was at Oregon and that’s the way it will be in Philadelphia.

Those were the words of Phillips, the former Giants No. 1 draft pick.

Allen doesn’t say things like that.

Thing is, it’s more than talk. These players have backed it up.

Phillips and Williams have Super Bowl rings. Safety Patrick Chung and Sopoaga have played in a Super Bowl.

Tackling was on Kelly’s List, too.

Williams missed just three last season, according to Pro Football Focus. Fletcher doesn’t miss many, either.

Now, before you pencil the Eagles in for a playoff spot next year, keep in mind that most of this collection of players have had their share of serious injuries, so they come with their fair share of question marks. But, hey, don’t most free agents come packaged that way?

Besides, it’s not like this group had a serious injury and are all 30 years old.

No, these players, with the exception of Sopoaga (who’s 31) and Benn (just 24), are between 26 and 28. So you figure that they come with something to prove, and the contracts are neat and tidy to allow them to do that.

Clearly, age was another aspect of Kelly’s List.

Barwin is signed for six years, but everyone else is on either a two- or three-year deal. Phillips is only on a one-year contract because his injury history is deep. But he is only 26, and he is a playmaker when healthy.

He may even become a fan favorite.

“I never thought I’d be sitting here today as a Philadelphia Eagle,” he said. “At this point I can’t say I hate the Giants. When I was with the Giants I kind of disliked the Eagles. But I can’t just say right now I hate the Giants. I guess I’ll have to learn to hate them.”

Nothing like good Giants hate for Eagles fans.

During a break in the action last week, Roseman talked about changing the culture of the defense.

He didn’t mention Kelly’s List, but he didn’t have to. He followed it like a treasure map.

Cox would be the 5 technique for us.ETA-Howie and many have said that Fletcher can play either one.

I think if Kelly likes Geno and thinks he will be a stud down the line then take him at 1.4 because there is a very good chance the Browns, Cards or Bills will take him so I'm not sure you can trade down. I'm not saying Geno would be my choice but I will trust Kelly and Roseman till they give me a good reason not to.

So we are in need of a 5-tech DE for the 3-4. It is one of the few spots where we dont have a starter pencilled in. In addition, Floyd if available at #4 would provide good value for the pick as well.I have to think that is where we go if we stay put at #4 and he is available.Thoughts?

I like Margus Hunt in the 2nd to fill that DE slot.Milliner 1st, Hunt 2nd, Manuel/Scott 3rd... sounds like a plan.BTW I'd love to see Denard Robinson on Day 3.

There's a bit of speculation on PFT that Jeremy Maclin is the WR acquisition that Irsay has been hinting at. I know his rookie deal is up after this season, but dealing him now would be hard to fathom. If only there was somone on the board with Colts access who could shoot this down...

Hard to see it on two fronts. Firstly Maclin is really talented if they could get him to toughen up and be consistent he could be a stud. Hard to see a coach giving up on a guy like that before taking a chance with him. Secondly, for all that Irsay's tweet talked about "getting a whopper in the boat", which would be kind of overselling Maclin up to this point, since he's basically an underachiever.

Maclin to Indy, with Luck throwing him the ball, would be very interesting.Maclin seemed to click well last year with Foles, who is a more traditional style QB than Vick obviously. And I am fairly certain Luck is better than Foles in every way imaginable.

Connor Barwin Revisited.

Since there was a bit of a discussion about this when the signing happened, and I was kind of down on it I went back and took another look both at some film from 2011 and 2012 and the stats.

Firstly I want to debunk the view that's been floated that his drop in sack numbers was due to a change in the way he was used between 2011 and 2012.

He covered about as often in 2012 as 2011 and did rush more from the less favorable left hand side, but not enough to account for such a huge drop. Barwin's rep as a pass rusher comes from a 6 sack 2 game stretch against the Bucs during their 2011 meltdown (2 sacks) and an overmatched Blaine Gabbert led Jags offense (4 sacks) a week later. Outside those two games, for the rest of his career he's a guy who gets a sack every 3 or 4 games. Barwin doesn't have a heap of pass rushing talent, he's pretty much straight line, doesn't change direction very well and doesn't have that burst of speed to get round the corner and finish. If we look at him as a pass rusher I think we'll be disappointed.

However I was wrong about his coverage. Zone wise he's not too bad, it shows he has a background on offense, he does try sink and shift into the passing lanes, gets his hands up, finds guys behind him etc. In underneath zone coverage I think he can do a solid job. The couple of times it looked like he was in man, didn't look good. He's a big guy who doesn't change direction that well, he'll struggle with RBs and TEs in man.

I like him better against the run. He's disciplined, stays home, doesn't lose contain, he's a good tackler. Does a good job setting the edge and holding his ground against OTs.

I think he's a SAM, not a straight pass rusher and if that's how they use him I think he'll do a decent job. Fits the theme of the rest of the FA signings I guess, in that we at least have a competent player we can put in that spot, and build the team from there.

To be completley honest, if they got anoough back I'd deal both of our WR's. Neither will ever be a true #1 and they may be the softest duo in the league.
