Well they cant hide the fact they visited Geno but they didn't have to bring Lurie and make a big stink about it. The stats may be deceiving when it comes to newly-acquired outside linebacker Connor Barwin. The former Texan racked up 11 1/2 sacks in 2011, then saw that number dip to three this past season.Meeting with local reporters for the first time Friday, Barwin filled in some of the blanks.“I played opposite of Mario Williams two years ago, and then he got hurt and I took over Mario’s spot and played the open side outside linebacker and had a lot of success there,” he said. “Last year because of injuries we had at linebacker I bounced back and forth and played both positions and kind of had to move around. The sack numbers weren’t there but the pressures and the hits were all there and the tackles were more from the year before.”On the open side, the outside linebacker was asked to rush the passer almost exclusively, whereas there are more coverage responsibilities at SAM. And according to Barwin, Houston linebackers had to change their overall approach in 2012.“We had to drop more, we had problems at inside linebacker, we had to cover up certain things on the outside,” he said. “The year before we rushed every time. Last year we had to bump the tight end before we could rush, and anyone that rushes the passer knows that’s going to slow down your rush.”The Eagles’ hope is that he’ll get back to his quarterback-sacking ways this year. It remains unclear exactly what role he will play in this scheme, but has the ability to play on either side. Regardless, the main priority will be getting after the passer. Many are wondering how the pieces will fit, given that Barwin, Trent Cole, Brandon Graham and Vinny Curry all project to be outside linebackers under Billy Davis.“I haven’t delved too much into the roster but I know Trent’s here and Brandon Graham. In any defense, especially with the way the game is going now, you need to be able to rotate at the defensive line and linebacker position to keep things fresh,” said Barwin. “I don’t exactly how it’s going to work out but I know you need a lot more than two guys to do it.”Barwin adds to the growing number of Cincinnati Bearcats on this roster, and was actually Brent Celek‘s backup at tight end his first two years.“Let me emphasize that I had a couple starts my sophomore year and I was coming for his spot, but he left for the NFL before I could take it,” said Barwin, drawing laughs. The coaching staff saw a need at defensive end and flipped the 6-4, 268-pounder to the other side of the ball. He would remain at end through his first two seasons with the Texans before being moved to outside linebacker. He has proven to be versatile, which is exactly the kind of player Chip Kelly likes.
I'd heard somewhere (might have been Iggles Blitz) that in the 2011 draft, Howie wanted Randall Cobb in round 2. We took Jaiquawn Jarrett.Reportedly, last year was also the first draft Howie ran - it's all starting to make sense...Wow, He was highly touted a couple years ago. It had to be Andy holding them back. Howies making all the right moves so far.A big WR. WTF, is this a dream? Lol

Yeah, maybe seems like Howie is more of a BPA guy and Reid seemingly valued need higher than Howie. I'm definitely on board with BPA, at least in the first two rounds(as long as it's at least somewhat of a reasonable fit).Well I mean I can see why Andy would have wanted to go that route.I'd heard somewhere (might have been Iggles Blitz) that in the 2011 draft, Howie wanted Randall Cobb in round 2. Im an old head so I don't know what FWIW means but the reason the Geno thing was such a big deal was because the Eagles made it one by bringing Lurie with them. Everyone expects them to meet with a lot of the top guys in the draft if they didn't it would be dumb but when they added Lurie something they have done in the past it makes it a bigger deal IMO.FWIW, Lattimore had a private workout here yesterday or the day before. I think the Laurie thing was blown way out of proportion, in my opinion. This isn't Jerry Jones or Al Davis. Laurie has alway been hands off. For all we know he was at the Lattimore one or simply had some free time and decided to attended the Geno one.Im an old head so I don't know what FWIW means but the reason the Geno thing was such a big deal was because the Eagles made it one by bringing Lurie with them. Don't see it. He's not very tall and going back to Oregon, Chip has recruited taller players for DL and LB.Im a Dumervil fan. Any chance the Eagles can make a play at him?

Yeah he is. I'm sure he'll get his fair share of money from someone. I want to see Graham play the Predator ( Rush OLB) this season. I think he's going to excel in this defense.Yeah, I don't see it as a fit. Great player though.and he'd be miscast as an OLB like he was when Denver played a 3-4 a couple years agoDon't see it. I haven't seen anything lately regarding the Eagles and FA's on Twitter. A tackle would be great, could also use another 3-4 linemen. It would be amazing to go into the draft with almost all of the holes filled and just draft BPA, or the guys Kelly feels that he can use the most effectively.Anyone hear anything on the tackles still unsigned? I have to think we're targeting someone at the position.
Vollmer is good but not great. He has a nasty streak and thats nice though. My gut tells me that Vollmer is looking for the most money, but I cant imagine he is getting Winston type Tackle money'Donny Loved Bowling said:If we don't add a RT then Joeckel/Fisher would be the obvious targets at #4. But with around $10M in remaining cap space, I'd be surprised if we weren't players for Vollmer/Winston. With one of them in the fold, Milliner would be the ideal target. Margus Hunt in the 2nd?
One of the big guys has to fall first I think. It seems like the rest are waiting around to see what Jake Long gets. IF we get one of the RT's how would you guys feel about Milner at 4 and Marques Hunt in the 2nd as our 3-technique?'Late225 said:Anyone hear anything on the tackles still unsigned? IF we get an OT then we're not talking another unless reports or Peters are bad which I don't expect.I don't think whether we get a tackle or not has anybearing on who we take with our first pick. We're taking whoever is at the top of our list.

I'd had no problem with that. I'd also wouldn't mind it if they took a shot on EJ Manuel in the 2nd.One of the big guys has to fall first I think. If we arent trying to sign Winston, it has to be because we are targeting a T in the draft BECAUSE Peters is expected to come back healthy. Could you imagine if Peters isnt back healthy and we dont select a Tackle in the draft AND dont sign a RT?'Late225 said:Anyone hear anything on the tackles still unsigned? I still really believe 1.04 is too high for any CB, ever. If we cant trade down ...I think you have to look for playmakers on the DL, like Star or Floyd. If not them, maybe Jordan if we beleive he is the real deal. If not, you need to consider Geno. The chances of us drafting at the 1.04 again are probably slim. We have to take BPA here as I dont believe we will ever get another chance at a player of this quality. Now, Chip could mess all this up and we could be picking Det, StL, Cle style for the next few years, but I would vote against that. One of the big guys has to fall first I think. Thats what im thinking....while Geno isnt the caliber of last years options its not like we have the chance to draft this high often.I still really believe 1.04 is too high for any CB, ever. Agree. If we want Geno I think we can trade down a few spots, pick up another pick and still get Geno. I doubt we're gonna have as high of a pick next year...and the QBs in next year's draft look as good, probably better than Geno. Why reach for such a big question mark?So reach for a QB who could bust just because you can? That's how you get fired in two years. If the Eagles are dead set on a QB in the draft, I'd take EJ Manuel in the 2nd or Matt Scott in the 3rd over Geno Smith at #4.
Didnt say I would but if Kelly likes him I wouldnt be surprised. Its not like there is a once in a generation talent that will be there at another position that im aware of.Agree. Yea but provided they don't get hurt, I think there is a much better chance guys like Joekel or Fisher will pan out and be deserving of this high draft spot moreso than Geno. And the QBs who will bet there in the mid 1st next year look to be just as good as Geno, if not better. I think it's better we build up both sides of the line 1st and roll with Vick for this season and address QB next year (as well as taking a flyer on a guy later in this draft).Didnt say I would but if Kelly likes him I wouldnt be surprised. Kelly's List guides Eagles in free agency
One of Chip Kelly’s first tasks as Eagles’ head coach was to write a job description for each position on the football field and hand it off to general manager Howie Roseman.
The two men needed to get on the same page, and they had to do it quickly. There was film to study. Players to evaluate. Decisions to be made.
This past week, during a wild and frenzied free agency period, we got a glimpse of what that top-secret information contained.
Call it Kelly’s List.
The one common denominator on it was size.
Whereas former head coach Andy Reid liked his players smaller and quicker, Kelly wanted his Eagles bigger and bulkier, and if quicker was part of that package, then so be it.
The team brought in eight players in free agency, then Friday acquired wide receiver Arrelious Benn in a trade with Tampa Bay.
All but one of those players is at least 6 feet tall. The only exception is cornerback Bradley Fletcher, and he misses the mark only by a single inch at 5-foot-11.
Nose tackle Issac Sopoaga is 6-2, 330 pounds.
Outside linebacker Connor Barwin is 6-4, 268 pounds. Until Barwin arrived, DeMeco Ryans was the biggest linebacker in height and weight at 6-1, 247 pounds.
Safety Kenny Phillips is 6-2, 217; Nate Allen is 6-1, 210; Kurt Coleman is 5-11, 195.
Bigger and bulkier.
That’s the way it was when Kelly was at Oregon and that’s the way it will be in Philadelphia.
Another theme of Kelly’s List?
Toughness.
How’s this work for you?
“Intimidation is huge in this game. I think it’s one thing to intimidate, but also to go out there and play physical each and every week, week‑in and week‑out, guys look at film, and they notice those things and take those things to heart.”
Those were the words of former Ravens cornerback Cary Williams.
Nnamdi Asomugha never talked like that.
“The moment you decide that you’re not going to try to separate the receiver from the ball, you’re going to hurt yourself and hurt the team. So I say, hey, just go out and hit them, maybe get fined. Just pay for it. You just got to pay for it. I’ve had my share.”
Those were the words of Phillips, the former Giants No. 1 draft pick.
Allen doesn’t say things like that.
Thing is, it’s more than talk. These players have backed it up.
Phillips and Williams have Super Bowl rings. Safety Patrick Chung and Sopoaga have played in a Super Bowl.
Tackling was on Kelly’s List, too.
Williams missed just three last season, according to Pro Football Focus. Fletcher doesn’t miss many, either.
Now, before you pencil the Eagles in for a playoff spot next year, keep in mind that most of this collection of players have had their share of serious injuries, so they come with their fair share of question marks. But, hey, don’t most free agents come packaged that way?
Besides, it’s not like this group had a serious injury and are all 30 years old.
No, these players, with the exception of Sopoaga (who’s 31) and Benn (just 24), are between 26 and 28. So you figure that they come with something to prove, and the contracts are neat and tidy to allow them to do that.
Clearly, age was another aspect of Kelly’s List.
Barwin is signed for six years, but everyone else is on either a two- or three-year deal. Phillips is only on a one-year contract because his injury history is deep. But he is only 26, and he is a playmaker when healthy.
He may even become a fan favorite.
“I never thought I’d be sitting here today as a Philadelphia Eagle,” he said. “At this point I can’t say I hate the Giants. When I was with the Giants I kind of disliked the Eagles. But I can’t just say right now I hate the Giants. I guess I’ll have to learn to hate them.”
Nothing like good Giants hate for Eagles fans.
During a break in the action last week, Roseman talked about changing the culture of the defense.
He didn’t mention Kelly’s List, but he didn’t have to. He followed it like a treasure map.
Cox would be the 5 technique for us.ETA-Howie and many have said that Fletcher can play either one.So we are in need of a 5-tech DE for the 3-4. It is one of the few spots where we dont have a starter pencilled in. In addition, Floyd if available at #4 would provide good value for the pick as well.I have to think that is where we go if we stay put at #4 and he is available.Thoughts?
I think if Kelly likes Geno and thinks he will be a stud down the line then take him at 1.4 because there is a very good chance the Browns, Cards or Bills will take him so I'm not sure you can trade down. I'm not saying Geno would be my choice but I will trust Kelly and Roseman till they give me a good reason not to.Agree. I like Margus Hunt in the 2nd to fill that DE slot.Milliner 1st, Hunt 2nd, Manuel/Scott 3rd... sounds like a plan.BTW I'd love to see Denard Robinson on Day 3.'scratcher said:So we are in need of a 5-tech DE for the 3-4. Hard to see it on two fronts. Firstly Maclin is really talented if they could get him to toughen up and be consistent he could be a stud. Hard to see a coach giving up on a guy like that before taking a chance with him. Secondly, for all that Irsay's tweet talked about "getting a whopper in the boat", which would be kind of overselling Maclin up to this point, since he's basically an underachiever. There's a bit of speculation on PFT that Jeremy Maclin is the WR acquisition that Irsay has been hinting at. I know his rookie deal is up after this season, but dealing him now would be hard to fathom. If only there was somone on the board with Colts access who could shoot this down...
Maclin to Indy, with Luck throwing him the ball, would be very interesting.Maclin seemed to click well last year with Foles, who is a more traditional style QB than Vick obviously. And I am fairly certain Luck is better than Foles in every way imaginable.Hard to see it on two fronts. To be completley honest, if they got anoough back I'd deal both of our WR's. Neither will ever be a true #1 and they may be the softest duo in the league. There's a bit of speculation on PFT that Jeremy Maclin is the WR acquisition that Irsay has been hinting at.
