I don't think anybody was happy with the Haley hire outside of steelers offices. His system didn't fit the personnel. His personality clashes with the franchise player. He did well with Kurt Warner and Fitz. So could I.

I realize we could be in for a good old fashioned butt whooping tonight but this is the NFL and anything can happen. One positive for tonight is that Velasco will be starting at C. Having a real center and freeing up Beachum to help out with blocking can only be a good thing.
The key match up is going to be CB Ike Taylor vs WR A.J. Green. Green absolutely destroyed the Beats secondary last week with 9 catches for 162 yards and 2 TDs. Ike is going to have his hands full.
Some interesting tidbits for the bettors:
* The Bengals opened at 6.5 pt favorites and the line has been wavering between 6.5 and 7.5 points. This is the most points the Bengals have been favored over the Steelers since the 1980s.
* Mike Tomlin is 3-10 against the spread on the road in the first month of the season as head coach Steelers. However, the Steelers are 12-5 against the spread in their last 17 games following a straight up loss.
* Mike Tomlin has never been 2 games under .500 and has never lost a game when taking the field with a losing record
* The Bengals have lost three straight and four of their last five games on Monday Night Football.
* The Bengals have lost four straight prime time games to Pittsburgh and are 2-12 against the Steelers in Paul Brown Stadium. Marvin Lewis is 44-37-1 in home games but 1-10 against Pittsburgh.

Agreed. After a great rookie campaign Pouncey has definitely fallen off a bit. He is still a decent player and no doubt the Steelers are going to miss him but Velasco, a guy that was sitting at home a week ago, was rated higher last season than Pouncey.
I will be watching Velasco but my guess is that he will do just fine and not having Pouncey won't be the reason should the Steelers lose tonight.

More than anything, the line just needs to stay healthy for an extended period of time so they can develop some chemistry and consistency. That is a luxury that they have not had in the past few seasons.

Much less worried about the C position after the signed Velasco. He will be at least competent. I expect a win tonight 10-3. The TD being scored by the D.

Another putrid offensive performance. Another OK job on defensive, but mostly by our older guys who aren't going to be around very long.

Im honestly thinking at this point the Steelers wouldve been better off not wasting 4 top-2 round draft picks on the OL the last few years. They couldve spent middle round picks on OL and it couldnt look any worse than this, and Velasco didnt look like the problem tonight.

These top oline picks recently have not impressed me at all (pouncey included in recent years). Hopefully all the talk of chemistry and such is true and this oline can improve, but at this point they have shown nothing at all.

Not that I'm convinced they'll be great but remember that both Adams (8 starts) and Decastro (5) are essentially rookies are far as starts and games played. Gilbert is the only one I'm thinking right now as possibly a bust but I guess even he only has so much playing time under his belt.

play Markus Wheaton you f'in idiots. What the hell are they waiting for with these rookies? Let them take their lumps and get better, quickly.
Not playing Wheaton is certainly a bit baffling, given their weak WRs and general lack of playmakers on offense. He flashed in preseason and can't be worse than Cotchery you wouldn't think. And it's not like he's one of these raw rookie receivers either - he's fairly polished for a rookie. I don't really understand it.

The Steelers clearly outplayed by Cincinnati last night. It is mind boggling how poor this offensive line is at run blocking. Aside from a few draws there really wasn't much out there.
However as badly as they were whooped, two plays really made a huge difference: The fumble by Paulson was brutal. He needs to learn to protect the ball when he's about to be hit -- and why we didn't hurry up and spike the ball was really stupid. The other play was the tripping call on Gilbert that wiped out a 30+ yard gain. I know you have to overcome bad calls but that was a terrible call on the part of the official.
On the positive side I don't think there were any serious injuries and Velasco seemed to play very well considering it was his first start and going up a pretty good defensive front.

Velasco may have been the best OLineman last night.
Two sacks total I think and one of them is on Ben (trying to be Ben). Just get rid of the ball already!Another positive is there weren't many penalties..so at least they're not killing themselves there like they have in the past.

There's not many more young guys to get out there really. Bell and Wheaton would be about it. Bell once he's healthy will be out there. Wheaton will get his shots. Cotch may be "old" but he's a solid route runner and (usually) sure handed. Good to see Moye get a little time last night. If they could ever get in the red zone he does look to be a good threat.

He had some drops in the preseason but he made some nice catches too. He may not be ready to take on the #3 role but overall I thought he looked pretty good during preseason.Not sure what was 'awful' about his preseason but ok.re: Wheaton

It's Wexell. Sometimes I wonder if he's watching the same game/team/players others are. He did have a drop I remember that kind of stood out but he did make some plays including a long TD.Not sure what was 'awful' about his preseason but ok.re: Wheaton

"I believe honestly that the answers are still in that room," said Tomlin during his post game press conference. One of those answers might just be rookie wide receiver Markus Wheaton, who saw very limited playing time for a second straight game.
"He will be," said Tomlin when asked if Wheaton will be part of those answers moving forward.

Pretty obvious that what you have been doing is not working. Get some screens going. Take some pressure off the line.

The pass protection looked a little better. That's not saying much though. The run blocking....ugh. This teams biggest problem right now begins with the "O" line. If they can somehow play better, everything else would fall into place. Can't say the RB's suck, when there is no room for them. Name any HoF RB, and he wouldn't be able to run well behind these guys right now. No running game, the passing game can't open up. These guys need to get better....quickly. I don't know if it's the new zone blocking or what, but it's gotta improve.

Like what, punt on 1st down?
Aside from the nonsensical Cotchery end-around, not spiking the ball after the Paulson fumble and perhaps not giving Jones more carries in the 2nd half, I don't have much of a problem with Haley considering what he has to work with.
The offensive line is very young, missing a key player and learning under fire, you don't have Heath Miller and until Bell comes back your running backs are Redman who stinks, Dwyer who was cut in preseason and Jones who was going to be cut had we not traded to get him. Sanders has already had a few big drops and Cotchery's hands have turned to stone.
Even with all of that they were still in the game in the 4th quarter against a tough opponent on the road and had it not been for the fumble off the big gain and a terrible tripping call that wiped out a 30+ yard gain, they might have won.
I have heard rumblings that Heath will be back next week so maybe the offense perks up a bit.

Oh, God....no. Not more of those. They ran, like, 8 of those last night(they are a Haley staple). I think one resulted in positive yards.

I love screen passes in the right circumstances but against that defense they were not working.
In no particular order -
Brown and Sanders both look like WR2s.
Paulson is not strong enough as a blocker.
Ben threw poorly.
No sacks or turnovers.
IMO the team looks unprepared too many times the last couple of years - that has to fall on Tomlin.
Poor game by the LB's as a unit- WIlliams looks like a good pick though.
