*** 2013 Official Pittsburgh Steelers Off & ON Season Thread *** (2 Viewers)

Led the nation in sacks and forced fumbles last year playing in the SEC. The two things this defense needs is more pressure and more turnovers.

Jones, Vaccaro, Eifert in that order. dontwant.exe Rhodes
Wouldn't mind Vaccaro. Afraid of Jones
Why?
Health. High risk/reward I guess but the Steelers can't afford to miss .
I don't think the risk is really that high. The doctors have checked him out. He clearly passed.

As to his play, I think he is very low risk. I think he is a top 5 player.

I love the pick.

Slow time is overrated IMO. Terrell Suggs ran a 4.9 too. The medical is my only concern, but it didn't seem to be an issue the last two seasons.

If you dont subscribe to SI and/or don't know Jones' story, read it at Steelersdepot. Gruden said on a character scale of 1-10, Jones is "a 15."

Here's a question : does Jones beat out Worilds this year and when?
Given what we know of Butler/LeBeau with LBs? Probably not until late in the year at the earliest, unless Worilds just craters, but he'll get used on third downs no question.

Worilds sucks.
Not really, but clearly his days are numbered now being a FA come '14.

Worilds actually had a higher sacks/snaps ratio then Harrison or Woodley last year IIRC. Guy at least deserves a chance, but at least now we have a replacement.

Worilds has looked a lot better at the Sam than the WIll. Woodley shows up fat/unproductive again any chance they move on from him in '14 if Worilds performs?

I assume not, since he was just restructured. Cap hit would likely be huge. Just thinking out loud.

No running backs in the first is a nice set up for the steelers in the second.
Well, Lacy was the only one who had a shot...Im not surprised by this, but it will definitely be interesting if Lacy is still out there a few picks before us in the 2nd.

Personally, I think Lacy will go early 2nd, but we will see

C grade from me.

PS: How do the damn Patriots make deals like that seemingly every year? 4 picks to move back a little over half a round? C'mon.
But the Vikings did get what they wanted. DL, DB, WR...and highly ranked ones at that. A+ for Vikes.

Minter, Te'o, Lacy, Bernard, Ertz, Banks, Allen, Hunter, Cyprien, Tank, Warford, Watson....we got 16th in 2nd, Smith, Nassib should be 2 outta 15 of them. I just listed 11. Heck, our 2nd rd pick could very well be better than our first.

Love the Jarvis Jones pick. He has a knack for generating turnovers and has a quick first step.

Round 2: Give me some Keenan Allen. PGH needs another starting WR and he has slipped to day 2, Go get him Colbert!!!

CB, S or ILB would make sense if WR value isn't there.

Sounds like I'm in the minority regarding Lacy. I don't see special talent here. The OL did the dirty work for him. PASS in round 2.

Love the pick! Need met BPA. Dominated the SEC and checked out with Steelers doctors.

Next pick to me comes down to safety, RB or ILB if they think Sean Spence is in trouble.

I like Cyprien, Franklin or Arthur Brown if any are still there. Great White Swope in the 3rd.

Given that ALL of the runners made it out of round one, that reinforces my opinion that they should just wait on that position til 4. Go after D/WR with the next two picks, in whichever order, then assess the RB situation in the 4th.

Only guy I would feel okay about them taking in 2 is Gio and I'd probably they take a pass if Hunter/Wheaton are available at WR, or if Cyprien or Williams somehow fall at S and NG respectively. Don't really want Lacy much, don't want Franklin in 2, and don't trust Lattimore to select him that high. Any other RB in this class pretty much "feels about the same" to me.

Ton of talent out there at need positions still. Safeties out the wazoo, several WRs, couple running backs, some ILB prospects, all 3 of the top NTs, all but 1 TE. LOTS of guys left that can really help. Now, let's hope for a QB run.

I know most fans are happy with the Jones pick, but I'm a touch surprised to see a decent percentage of Steeler fans down on him. Last year, he missed two games and still led the nation in both sacks and TFL. In 10 games he played against top competition (SEC games, GT rivalry game, and bowl game) - he recorded 13 sacks. Against Alabama in the SEC title game, he sacked McCarron twice, going through a line that we just saw two guys drafted from in the top 11 picks. Against Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl, he sacked a very mobile Taylor Martinez twice more.

Don't tell me this kid can't get to the QB because he ran a 4.9. If memory serves, both Harrison and Woodley ran in the 4.75-4.8 range and they never seemed to have a problem racking up sacks. It's about a lot more than quickness, let alone top-end speed. Even though Ansah and Mingo can run 4.5-4.6, it's not going to do them a ton of good if they have no pass rush moves. NFL tackles can still get between you and the ball, and you have to have an arsenal at your disposal to beat them. That's what Jones brings.
