15 cut today for the roster trim to 75, a couple moves of note:

Cut/Waived: Baron Batch, Stevenson Sylvester, DeMarcus Van Dyke, David Gilreath, John Parker Wilson

to PUP: Sean Spence

Kind of surprised about Sylvester.
Sylvester is a surprise. Spence going on the PUP instead of IR could be a good sign.
This is the most surprising thing to me, although the way the coaches were talking a few months ago it sounded like his career was over barring a miracle recovery. It almost seems to me like they feel so bad for him they just want to give him a paycheck for as long as they can.

Tomlin made it a point to clarify that Spence was not done after Butler made his comment.

I agree that I might be reading too much into this. I am not sure what the financial implications of being on the PUP vs IR are (if any). It may just be a courtesy or motivational thing thing too.

I am hoping that perhaps it is a sign that, even if he cannot return this season, that he is making enough progress that perhaps there is still a slight chance.

Earlier this month: Will Graves @WillGravesAP

Steelers LB Sean Spence hard at work on agility drills. Doesn't look like a guy who will be out all season.

4:40 PM - 8 Aug 2013
 PUP means he's out until at least week 6 but could start practice then or as late as mid Nov. If he practices then they have 3 weeks from his first practice to acitvate or IR him.

I cant say Ive been closely following Sean Spence's recovery, and while "agility drills" is fairly ambiguous, that still sounds more promising than I wouldve expected at this point.

Does Woods playing NT this past Saturday and Ta'amu/Fangupo getting little or no playing time spell the end for them? I'm thinking yes. It gives them roster flexibility and they need it since they have to carry at least 2 guys that probably won't be playing the first week or more.

I was thinking the same thing watching the replay. I think Fangupo is as good as gone, but all I was hearing on Ta'Amu throughout camp was how much better shape he was in, how much he was improving, etc. Clearly, he's likely never going to be the player I thought he could be coming out of college, but his size/strength/feet are fairly rare - I'm almost afraid to let him go and watch him develop into a starter elsewhere.

I still really want them to find room for Reggie Dunn. This guy returns kicks the way I always see other teams' returners doing it against us, get to full speed as fast as possible, find one seam, and explode through it. I know the KR game isn't what it used to be with kicks coming from the 35, but Dunn will take anything that lands halfway back of the end zone out to the 30-35, and will break 1-2 for TDs, guaranteed. He's a weapon - I just wish he could do ANYTHING else.

You can cut Landry Jones now.

Sub 50% completion for an entire preseason isnt fixable.

:censored:
I thought he could develop into a serviceable backup and spot starter given time, but man he has looked lost and very timid out there. Things could change, but he certainly hasn't improved over this preseason.

He isnt worth a roster spot.

Practice squad fodder only. And you can probably find better options (at QB, let alone every other position) when the cuts down to 53 occur.

Overall loved our draft in April, but the Landry pick stuck out like a sore thumb as awful. It looks even worse now than I expected then.

I thought Jones showed some signs of life early in the game. Definitely some bad choices in the 2nd half. 1st half stats (against some Panther starters) were 10/20 133 yards 1 TD 0 INT and that throw to Paulson was a thing of beauty.

Speaking of OL, we know the top 6. What I saw of who is left is Long and Malecki have to make the team. Anyone else?

Just came up on twitter. Pouncey needs to step it up.

It hasn't been all bad news for the Steelers offensive line. Two linemen graded out well in the preseason:

By now, it’s rather obvious the offensive line is a work in progress, but at least two players on the line performed well during the preseason.

Ramon Foster and David DeCastro graded out well according to the analysts at Pro Football Focus. Not including last night’s games, Foster had a No. 18 ranking and David DeCastro came in at No. 27 among all guards who saw snaps during the first three preseason games. John Malecki was at No. 41, Chris Hubbard at No. 71 and Guy Whimper at No. 109.

Now comes the bad news. The starting tackles and center were ranked among the worst at their position.

I didn't like the pick at #4 and still don't like it but I actually feel a little better about it now. Of course he is not ready for prime time but I thought he showed some good stuff in the first half. He throws a nice ball, led the receivers really well and has decent mobility.

The first two picks in the second half were bad but it was his first NFL game where he saw extensive action. He was also victimized by some drops and the receiver fell down on the last pick.

I am not saying Landry is the next Big Ben but give him some time. He has all the tools -- it is just a matter of waiting to see if he can get better given time and experience.

Not too worried about Pouncey or really anyone on the starting OL. It takes time for an o-line to gel, especially with a new coach and new scheme. I am worried about the lack of depth though.

I thought Moye and Paulson had really nice games. Not sure what was up with Wheaton last night though.

Butler seems to have sewn up the punters position and Dunn appears to be done as a Steeler.

I though LBs Carter and Baxter had real nice games. Going to be tough to cut Baxter.

Felix Jones looked pretty good but Dwyer had another nice game last night and so did LSH. Obviously Bell isn't going to get cut and apparently Redman has a job locked up too. That likely leaves Jones as the odd man out unless they put Bell on the PUP. Personally I think I would keep Jones and cut Redman and save a few bucks in the salary cap.

One veteran trying to convince the coaches to keep him is halfback Felix Jones, and he made a decent case. Jones, acquired in a trade last week with the Philadelphia Eagles, ran 14 times for 56 yards, at times displaying the kinds of cuts that convinced the Dallas Cowboys to draft him in the first round in 2008.

"I thought Felix Jones helped himself," Tomlin said. "His pedigree showed, his natural run instinct showed."
Interesting.

I could see them trying to trade Dwyer and going with a Redman/Felix committee for the most part.

Dywer has never been able to stay in shape and is usually in Tomlin's doghouse and reportedly on the trading block earlier this year.

I doubt anyone is giving them anything for Dwyer knowing that he may be cut. My question is why Redman automatically makes the team when he has been injured often and didn't really perform that well last season.

I thought Dwyer ran pretty well this preseason.

He usually does look good for a short time but doesn't seem to maintain his effort. Bouchette posted a

couple of hours ago that he thinks Felix may start against the Titans.

Well the other thing is that Dwyer fumbled again last night. That doesn't sit well with coaches, especially after last season, so maybe Dwyer IS history.

there is no cure for a candy arm. jones just cannot make the throws an NFL QB needs to make. such a bad pick.

as for Max Starks, i'd always welcome him back in the black and gold. blame the Chargers QB for not eluding the sacker.

I can't believe Felix is getting as much love as he is. I thought he looked terrible and I'd rather have batch if given the choice. I think a Dwyer/LSH combo with Redman at the goal line would be plenty effective for the first few weeks.
