*2014-15 Hot Stove Thread: The Padres won it I guess (3 Viewers)

Poor Ruben can't win. People are crushing him for holding out for an elite prospect for Hamels, and guys would be crushing him if he let him go for less than an elite prospect.
I think he should look for a whole bunch of prospects, not just a headliner. They needs lots of help.
"A whole bunch of prospects" doesn't keep his job. He's not in a situation where he can take 4 low-level prospects and wait 4 years to say "I told you so."
He has kept his job despite not winning more than half their games in each of the last 3 years. Not sure a Hamels trade would end his GM'ship
I cant imagine any scenario where Roob is the GM next season. The Phils are at a cross-roads of ownership and hopefully Gillick is making all the calls anyway at this point. They need a new GM from OUTSIDE the organization ASAP. Time to turn the page.

They are staring a long-term rebuild in the face. Trading Hamels is perhaps the most important part of that project. If he can't prove he's the man to get the return necessary there, it is unlikely they view him as the guy to get the rest of the rebuild done. I'd say a good portion of his job security hinges on his ability to execute in this situation.

I had a couple beers with a Padres insider last night - he seemed to think that the Padres were very close on Hamels and that Shields availability at a much cheaper cost ($ & bodies) is the reason Hamels isn't a Padre right now.

Had Shields taken the Giants 4/$80M offer earlier in the offseason, you guys would likely have Casher, Hedges, and another top prospect.

Doolittle is the A's rep this year. He faces Yadier Molina in Rd 2, after dispatching pint-sized challenger Jose Altuve in Round 1. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/awards/y2014/faceofmlb/

In actual A's news, I guess they're after this other Cuban 2B Olivera pretty hard.
Apparently ALL the Cubans are 2B

I read that on the Internet so it must be true

Saw a vine on twitter showing two strokes from Olivera. Per that 6 second scouting report, I'm all in on Olivera.

ETA: Found it. Olivera strong like bull.

Seattle seems to be the perfect landing place for Weeks. Match him up with Cano and there isn't a better platoon situation in all of baseball.

The Phillies prefer to deal with the Red Sox, per Rosenthal, hoping to land either Mookie Betts or Blake Swihart in return.
Amaro is a fool
Not gonna argue that, but Im OK with him holding out for a top prospect in return for Hamels. They're not gonna get Betts, but Swihart seems like a fair swap, IMO.
Swihart is #17 prospect in all of baseball, per BP, and top catcher. Very doubtful that Boston trades him for anything.
Boston Herald - Why the Red Sox should trade Swihart for Hamels

It seems pretty clear he would have won it all last year were it not from some dickery from Wright's camp with a last minute and unexpected huge surge of votes from South Korea. Then again can't get too upset over that, as it seems the only reason Sogard made it that far was due to the power of trolls.

They aren't gonna platoon their 240 million dollar star. Now, get back to the dickery
Money really shouldn't be the issue here. This is about winning baseball games. Weeks had an .865 OPS v LHP last year. Cano .746

This is hilarious, at least its baseball related though.

You were hung up on W/L ratio the other day, so you might be a little slow when it comes to modern stats. Do you need OPS explained to you?

OPS is hardly all that advanced.

On days that The M's face LHP, Cano will make a fine late inning defensive replacement. He's clearly the superior fielder.
I could see rostering Weeks as a bench guy and the days you rest Cano against particularly tough lefties, Weeks could fill in.

Not sure Weeks would go for that, but

He just wants to know their playoff OPS.

Good point

Cano has a .686 Post Season OPS overall. Come October, if the M's are fortunate enough to make the post season, you might not want him out there at all.

I read somewhere that Weeks is expected to try to play LF and RF with the Mariners.

I can't understand why the Jays weren't in on a guy like Weeks for 1 yr, 2 mil. They are entering camp with Maicer Izturis and Ryan Goins as 2B options. He'd be a huge offensive upgrade for a small commitment.

Let's start with some of your background info. That might help make it easier for me to explain this to you.

First off, how are you?

Secondly, what's your age? It seems that some of the older people I encounter (Eephus is obviously exempt from this) don't understand advanced metrics. I'm thinking you fall into this demographic.

First, I'm clearly older then you judging by your maturity or immaturity I should say.

Secondly, the idea of ever platooning Weeks with Cano vs LHP is flat out comical.

Cano has a lifetime .785 OPS vs LHP which is more then serviceable, with a .290 lifetime BA on top of playing an elite, gold glove 2b.

The idea that you would even suggest it shows me you're a fool actually.

But again, its at least baseball discussion, not the mindless kindergarten dribble you apparently think is funny.

You didn't answer his age question.

Here's how I read this first off, let me answer your second question, but not really answer it

Secondly, let me post a bunch of drivel to help solidify the notion that my baseball acumen is stuck in the dead ball era

And while I'm at it, thirdly, l'm going to try to insult and mock someone that's graciously trying to offer up their assistance.

If your assistance is suggesting they platoon Robinson Cano with anyone not named Robinson Cano, then your assistance isn't needed and quite frankly its a disservice to anyone reading that mess.

Now go back to sticking your head into those various MLB metrics, maybe look at a few spray-charts while you're at it you daring saber feen.

Good day to you.
